Mr Brainwash Love/Hate, by elrosso1000 on May 17, 2010 14:20:27 GMT 1, I don't post on these forums often, more of an observer.
As i travel around the internet art scene i see a lot of hate for Mr Brainwash, also Love but mainly hate.
People say he has no skill, or just rips off other artists. Well elements of that may be true but he has always been a decent guy along the way.
I recently ordered his print "All you need is love" which came today, which looks fantastic btw, accompanying it to my suprise were two extra posters, one being the Chaplin new york poster and the Liberty poster.
This is the second time i have ordered from him and the second time i have got not one but two extras along with my print. Seeing as people on ebay are selling these at ยฃ50 a pop it's a pretty decent thing to do, not that i am going to sell them.
So yea i am standing up for Mr Brainwash, he seems like a decent enought guy to me. Bring on the flames.

Mr Brainwash Love/Hate, by Daniel Silk on May 17, 2010 14:36:28 GMT 1, NEVER worry about other peoples opinions. If you love an artists work, then thats good enough enjoy it, and if others get all wound up about it then thats just their problem.
Thierry has found a gap in the art market and seems to enjoy what he's doing, so good for him!

Mr Brainwash Love/Hate, by Icesay on May 17, 2010 15:04:18 GMT 1, Well i agree with Shep Fairey....Mr Brainwash's art is a pastiche of lots of influences and you shouldn't spend much money on it. There is a lot of great art out there to put on your wall, not sure Mr B's work is fresh enough for that!

Mr Brainwash Love/Hate, by Cedric Mnich on May 17, 2010 15:26:05 GMT 1, If a few people including gallerists, rich/influent collectors and consultants decide that MBW is the new hype artist, whether his art is innovative/original and you like it or not, they will do all they can to push the prices up. To me, the fact that MBW sold for 100K$ at Philips depurry sale (whereas the banksy found no buyer) shows that there was some "support". Of course, it could be a sincere collector or people (Ann Hathaway ?) who bought it but most likely MBW himself, his gallerist or a very close friend / relative of him (Invader ? Banksy ?). Since I saw that BBC Ben Lewis show about Art Market, I am quite defiant towards what we see regarding prices etc at auctions.
Now, one should wonder why he buys art ? Is it to decorate a place ? just for the love of the art piece ? to make investment ? to have the latest hype artist to show off when friends come at home ? All of this ?
I have not very much of an opinion about MBW's art, neither love or hate but I think love and hate is good for an artist : even only hate will be better than total indifference. But, as an investment, I'd prefer buying the original photographer's work of Lennon with the Panda rather than a vectorization print with a pink splash. To me, the creativity in that print is not MBW's but the photographer's who made the photoshoot. Some creativity would have been to replace that Panda with something else. Just my 2 cents.

Mr Brainwash Love/Hate, by Cedric Mnich on May 17, 2010 15:32:21 GMT 1, Icesay, isn't Shep Fairey's art a pastiche as well of lots of influences ? => Socialism, constructivism, propaganda, pop culture, and even nazism imagery (I think he used the SS skull and bones in the past). I wonder if Shep had been as popular and succesful if he hadn't made that Obama poster. Was he regularly sold at auctions / saught after by collectors before the Obamania ?
If OBEY / PROPAGANDA is Shep's message, maybe MBW wants LOVE / POP ICONS to be his message.

Yes i see your point of view but i just used Shep as a reference. I think the same comparisons could be made about most art / artists in similar genres. I must admit i don't like the icons stuff because its too obvious and not very stimulating. Also it seems like a progression of street art further into the mainstream. On the other hand MBW appeals for other reasons and could be one of the best social art experiments ever! Who knows...not feeling his style though.

Not to mention that Sheps work sells between 35-100 dollars...How much does Mr. Brainwash's sell for. Shep didn't say to not spend money on his work, he said people shouldn't spend alot meaning his prices are what shep is talking about. If Mr. Brainwash puts prints out for like 35 bucks..i have no problem picking one up, but if he is trying to get 2-300 dollars out of them..he won't ever get my business. His studio is kinda set up like sheps where he has people help him crank out the art. In that case I feel he is more mainstream and should reduce his prices. If the secondary market wants to hype the artist up so be it, but I don't think he deserves it.

Mr Brainwash Love/Hate, by Happy Shopper on May 17, 2010 22:22:12 GMT 1, Anyone can imitate. Only a few originate. That's the difference.
MBW is just creating more of what's already been done before, and brings nothing new to it. I'd say he does it better than many other who do the same, but it's still imitation.
It's not just MBW, this counts for many other stencil/street "artists"

most of banksys ideas are not original, designers think of these ideas everyday - its just hes a name that executes them

Mr Brainwash Love/Hate, by twist65 on May 18, 2010 2:16:21 GMT 1, Banksy comes up with ideas that designers wish they had thought of first. MBW pays designers to rehash ideas that other artists thought of first. Fair play to him posting out multiple freebies though, beats stickers and a rolled up postcard any day. If you like his work and think he's a top guy then thats 2 good reasons to hang one on your wall.

I don't think it's about the images that Banksy or Shep create now, it's the wave they started that everyone else is now riding.
Very few artist can create a new "Wave". Banksy managed it, even though stencils and his ideas are perhaps not completely original... he sparked the "Street Art" boom. MBW and the rest just follow.

Think about all the kids out there and the chain reaction: art become easy...Being an artist in 2010 is all about the hype and printing your own money...MBW does it really well...I love Banksy, but nothing is new under the sun,and many of his ideas are recycle one, i often think of him as a cartoonist, but just making bigger image using stencil in the street, not that original after all...

I completely agree with you freerange. Me and crazy jake were having a discussion that his most recent prints and some of his street art have not been as strong as some of his past prints/street art has.
Could banksy be getting tired of trying to think of clever messages to send to the people? Hell you gotta give it a rest sometimes.
