Chris Stain's biggest hand cut stencil we have!, by Ad Hoc Art on May 21, 2008 23:15:41 GMT 1, Hey all. I am excited to report that artist Chris Stain has decided to release his large scale stencil, entitled Sitting Bull, for purchase. He has been known for selling smaller works, keeping the larger pieces for installation only and not for sale. This show he has allowed 2 large pieces (this one is the second) to be sold. The first sold right away. Here is the second. A truly stunning large scale hand cut stencil of a legendary figure in American history. Stain told me he did this piece because Sitting Bull was the last one to give up the fight against the United States Government. In fact, he didn't even surrender, his son surrendered. If you were to ask him he would have told you, "I never surrendered. My son surrendered." Info, price and image below. PM with any questions. Take care.

Chris Stain's biggest hand cut stencil we have!, by GVD on May 24, 2008 19:31:16 GMT 1, I dont really get the selling of the stencils, its like selling the brushes a painting is painted with..
But i guess it looks cool on a wall.

Nice analogy. I would agree with you, except the pricing kind of ruins that angle in this case, as it's the same price as the most expensive end product sold and sketches are usually a lot cheaper than the oil that follows. I like the look of this stencil though and I reckon GVD is right that this would probably look pretty cool as a stand alone piece, once hung.

Chris Stain's biggest hand cut stencil we have!, by bellman on May 25, 2008 8:33:05 GMT 1, Obviously, Chris Stain's prices have gone up. Demand for his work has gone up as well. As you can see below, his work is selling quite well in the range of $800 up to $6000. That was as old show you posted info from.
Would that be the same "old show" that included the works below, that didn't sell at inflated prices?
First Response, Hand-painted Stencil on Steel, 12 x 18 inches, 2007, $1,500.00 UNSOLD
Ski, Hand-painted Stencil on Steel, 12 x 12 inches, 2007, $1,200.00 UNSOLD
Now correct me if I'm wrong but didn't you sell Ski for a more realistic $1000 a full $200 cheaper than in the previous exhibition and aren't you offering "First Response" at $1250 which is $250 below the previous exhibition price. Don't you think that makes a mockery of your argument and your pricing? At least be consistant

The problem with that show is that his smaller works were overpriced and his larger works were underpriced. It confused the heck out of people. That is why the show didn't have the sales it could have had. All I am trying to do is set things straight and get things back on track for Chris Stain's pricing. As for his works being overpriced...his works are almost always more affordable when compared to another artist at the same place in their career. In fact, the comment I hear most often from collectors and fans is how reasonable his prices are in the current street art market.

Chris Stain's biggest hand cut stencil we have!, by reznyce on May 25, 2008 19:57:15 GMT 1, I would not describe any of the work as "overpriced," especially in this atomsphere where buyer do not hesitate in dropping a few grand on prints.

totally agree. They were very much underpriced last year and now the asking prices seems very fair. He captures mood through stencilling like no other.
But I wouldn't want to actually buy the stencil itself though
