Damien Hirst Camel Cigarette art, by olivier on Jun 16, 2010 20:43:39 GMT 1, This pack was one of three that Camel did in 1999 as part of their "Work in Progress" promotion. The other artists who had art used on packs were Nan Goldin and Christopher Chiappa. The packs were for promotion only and were never sold to the public. The only way to get them was through Camel's distribution reps.
It is a fairly rare piece in mint condition. I've seen one sell on ebay in the last 12 months or so for over $200 usd. There is also a version that has printing across the front of the plastic wrapper reading "complementary: not for sale...".
Evidently there was a licensing issue with Hirst over the use of the imagery. In addition to the cigarette packs, Camel had produced a Zippo lighter with the same image that was not sanctioned by Hirst, and he got mad and yanked the rights for the image. The lighter was never distributed officially, and the few existing examples go for over $500 usd.
