Thanks for posting poorgirl. Yes a show running the month of October, in the USA. Opening Reception is Saturday, October 4th from 5-7, probably go drinking after. It's at the Deblois Gallery, 138 Bellevue Ave, Newport, RI. Loads of work in the show in a variety or styles, probably 30 - 40+ pieces. Here's a couple more pics:

Rene Gagnon ๐บ๐ธ Graffiti Art โข Painting โข Art For Sale, by bostonlongstroke on Sept 21, 2008 5:08:42 GMT 1, Bellevue Ave in Newport, RI is also known as old mansion row. It's also where the tennis hall of fame is.
Amazingly enormous mansions on Bellevue that are owned by some of the oldest money in the US. The Vanderbilt's, Rockefeller's, Carnegie's, etc.
If you're going here for the R. Gagnon show(which is near the top of the street, by the tennis hall of fame), be sure to check out all of Bellevue. You'll be doin' yourself a huge disservice if you didn't make it to the far end of Bellevue.
Also, they've got some great bars right there, within walkin' distance to each other.
If this show was in July, as opposed to the scheduled October, it would be party pandemonium down there. That place is phuckin' bat-sh1t-crazy durin' the summer!

Rene Gagnon ๐บ๐ธ Graffiti Art โข Painting โข Art For Sale, by fool4faile on Oct 3, 2008 9:56:57 GMT 1, which of the artists came up first with their version of warhol's campbell's soup-can as a spray-can, the idea is basically the same. gagnon calls his "graffiti soup" and Mr Brainwash "tomato spray"- i saw the gagnons first, but that doesn't have to mean he actually produced it before mbw.
does anyone here know 4 sure?

Rene Gagnon ๐บ๐ธ Graffiti Art โข Painting โข Art For Sale, by raiden on Oct 3, 2008 10:27:07 GMT 1, I'm pretty sure Rene. MBW is pretty damn derivative. I don't want to bash on MBW, because he puts on a pretty good show and is a genuinely nice guy - but he over relies on artistic assistants and so much of his work looks a bit "borrowed."
There were scant few pieces in his LA show which I didn't come across as a rendition of someone else.
Frankly, to understand MBW, you have to realize he was a documentary filmmaker who turned his camera on urban art, and then after being a groupy of sorts, he decided he was an urban artist. That's doesn't mean he can't either develop into a true urban artist (and to his credit, he does actively bomb a great deal in LA) but soooo much of his work comes across as emulating what he's seen from other artists he covered as a filmmaker.
I personally still don't know what to make of MBW. I think he's best summed up by saying MBW has simultaneously done a lot to spread urban art, but has done little to nothing to add to its progression.
I'd really would like to hear Rene's take. I used to see him on this board.
I always liked Rene's work and long thought he doesn't get enough credit. I like that his canvases have the frenetic feel free hand street pieces, but do so through a combination of stencil and abstraction.
Though some of his work gets a bit silly and I think he's a bit all over the place sometimes, I still think aesthetically, he's under appreciated and have thought about purchasing an original from him. His stuff really reminds me of a cross between Goldie and Ben Frost - with a little extra tinge of abstract. But on a purely visceral level, much of his stuff is huge and colourful and therefore eye popping in a house.
Added some pics of his recent work...
My two cents.

Its one thing to slightly borrow... (i.e. Dolks Mona, Walkers Mona, Banksy Mona, blah blah blah) these are all more or less new takes on material.
What irks me about MBW is how much of his body of work is as you said "robbed" and that when he does "borrow," he doesn't change much.
