Badly executed? They are drips.
And I think the point is that it is this fancy, sharp type is dripping. A little bit of a play on a cliche and perhaps a commentary on Christina's life/attitude/personality/duality or whatever other artsy fartsy attachment you want to give it.

Yes thats right, badly executed drips. Because they are drips can they not be badly executed? My reasons:
I think the typography used doesnt suit the idea of drips alongside it.
The drips to clean, (vector based). It would probably look ok if the drips were a little thicker, thats my opinion.

That is the point. He isn't using a mop or can. As far as the thickness, I'd say it is a good ratio compared to if he was.
It is the idea of the drips and not the drips themselves that matter.
Plus the length of them lead you right down to the album title. D* is a schooled graphic designer iirc, so I'm sure he thought of all that.
Anyhow, entitled to your opinion. I still love the cover.

Agree, the length of the drips are spot on, and also agree i love the main image.

DFace • Christina Aguilera "Bionic" Album Cover, by bullet on Mar 29, 2010 12:38:09 GMT 1, i would imagine there was nothing dface would have been able to do about the type on it, it would have been a record label decision.
any designer would just want the image to speak for itself, its often others that want to add the things that don't fit.

indeeed
and regarding the drips - they look badly executed because it looks like they were added in MS Paint, seriously

On the contrary - surely any designer would see the type as part of the design as a whole? I would be very surprised if Dface wasn't responsible for the type as well...

Sorry, think you got the wrong end of the stick.
did not mean the client had done the type.
more that the client has been directing.
i work with it every day.
clients have the last say.

DFace • Christina Aguilera "Bionic" Album Cover, by spirit on Mar 29, 2010 13:42:44 GMT 1, So you are saying that Dface did the type, but he doesn't like it, and he was made to do it that way by the record company?
It could have happened like that I suppose but I think its a bit premature to presume that without any evidence. It's more likely that the type is as D wanted it imo.
Thankfully, in 14 years working as a designer I have never yet been over-ruled on a design by a client...after all, they're paying me because they know that I am a lot better at it than they are!

I agree, he may have had options, the client may not pick the option you would have but you still come up with each concept as a designer.

My guess, (and its only a guess) is they would of given him the photograph. They probably discussed the idea together and dface probably went away and came up with the image as we see it now. I should imagine there were probably different options as far as different colourways, typography and composition but i very much doubt he had many constraints at all. Would be interesting to hear from the man himself about it though.

In my experience, if you want to avoid having the client mess things up at the end, you've got to get a good idea of what they are trying to achieve, their vision and their ideas at the very start - before you even start work. You've got to get the brief right and agreed by all concerned. After that, it should be up to the designer alone to answer that brief.
