World Cup 2010 - South Africa, by schlomo on Apr 27, 2010 15:09:47 GMT 1, I'd much rather play Carrick and Barry, at least it'll balance nicely. Both defensive mid though !! Gerard will play out wide to accommodate lamps and Barry imo, like he often does at the pool. Otherwise we will struggle to find goals in midfield
I'd rather Joey Cole and Aaron Lennon out wide.... or 5 in midfield?
I'm sure you're right tho, both Gerrard and Lampard will get in on the basis that they are Gerrard and Lampard.

World Cup 2010 - South Africa, by Warm Gun on May 9, 2010 17:36:02 GMT 1, For me this will be the closest contested world cup for a long long time. Spain have the form but I just don't think they'll have the balls to win it (despite success in the Euro's).
The Netherlands have some outstanding players like Robin, schneider, Van Persie... but will they crumble as a team like they do in every competition?.....probably.
Argentina struggled to qualify but do have a few match winners.
Italy aren't as good as they were four years ago. I can't even see them scoring many.
Brazil are Brazil, they, like Germany always step up a gear for this tournament, you can never count either of them out.
Portugal, well, they have some world class players but struggled to qualify. I can't see them doing that well.
England. A few months ago I was 100% convinced that we could win this. Rooney looked like a world beater, Terry looked awesome, Defoe was scoring for fun, Joe Cole was returning from injury, Joe Hart looked unbeatable and Villa's young upstarts, Milner and Young were exciting to watch.
Fast forward to now, Rooney has niggling injuries, Ferdinand looks like a League one player, Terry has been beaten down by the press, Bridge won't play for England, Gerrard looks like a shadow of himself, Barry in injured, Carrick is off form, Cole smashed his ankle in, Lennon has had a nasty long term injury and has barely played for months, Beckham ruptured his achilles and we don't seem to have a right back.
I'm concerned about all of this. We've gone from a strong squad to an understrength one in a month. I'm praying Rooney picks up his game again (he's almost looking his old self again today) but we haven't decided who will partner him. Bent is certainly not good enough and Defoe is too inconsistent at the moment.
We still haven't decided on our number one keeper, but it looks like it won't be Hart. Maybe Capello will opt for West ham's Green.....relegation contenders until last week.
Heck, there's even talk of a call up for Carrigher and Neville in todays paper. Are we really that weak at the back?
Our midfield looks less formidable with an out of form Gerrard and Capello still hasn't solved the bloody Gerrard Lampard dilemma. (we all know they don't play well together) and the alternative of Barry and Carrick doesn't seem to be an option any more. Milner's form of late as been indifferent.
Hargreaves is due back but it's too late for him. Parker is on form but I can't see him breaking into the first team.
One small beam of light is the form of King and Dawson an the back They are a must.
Overall I'm nowhere near as confident as I was a mere two months ago.
We have a month to sort ourselves out.

World Cup 2010 - South Africa, by chrisoffbeat on May 9, 2010 23:40:41 GMT 1, Hi all Attached is a short survey about cheating in football, as part of a study myself (and a colleague from Inst of Work Psychology, University of Sheffield) are conducting during this summer's World Cup. We are looking for fans from all 32 nations competing to complete the survey. Therefore, I'd both be very grateful if you could complete it, and better still, pass it on to any friends/aquaintances you may know who have any interest in football.
If you have contacts from participating nations other than England that would be extra-helpful - a full list is below - and if North Korea, Cameroon, Algeria or similarly less internet-connected nations, then it would be extra-extra-helpful...
The survey is found here www.surveymonkey.com/s/worldcupcheating
Thanks for your time ;-) cheers Chris

"Capello's squad selection is not as interesting as this morning's newspapers had us believe it might be. Contrary to blanket speculation across the board that Hargreaves had sufficiently impressed with the one minute of football he's played in two years to merit inclusion ahead of a hobbling Gareth Barry, Canada's finest has failed to make the cut ahead of the Manchester City midfielder. So has Bobby Zamora, with Darren Bent getting the treasured non-playing, non-travelling striker's role ahead of him.
Despite being out of form and way over the hill, Jamie Carragher has also come out of international retirement to answer his country's call by joining a squad that already boasts a defender with no caps, a defender whose knee is famously the size of a pumpkin, a defender whose worryingly vague "back problems" have already placed his participation at the helm of any World Cup-themed TV wind-up shows in jeopardy, and a defender known as The International Accident Waiting To Happen That Is Dressing Room Morale's John Terry. Throw Subbuteo's Shaun Wright-Phillips, a couple of comedy goalkeepers and Mr Em into the mixer and one can only conclude that Spain and Brazil will be soiling themselves. "

World Cup 2010 - South Africa, by OutsideIn on May 16, 2010 11:41:29 GMT 1, I reckon he will only take 1 of the spurs centre backs either dawson or king..I reckon it will be king as overall he is better and hopefully we can use him when we really need him.
I also hope he does take huddlestone for the midfield, he has proved a lot at tottenham this season. lennon and walcott either side would give a great attacking force.
as for strikers, I have never rated bent and I think crouch would be perfect to get a bit of variety along side rooney or defoe. crouch plays with defoe and it works and rooney is rooney. I guess taking 4 strikers is a must so heskey would be my 4th.

Yeah, I can see John Terry being the weak link in the team Him or Carragher, they both seem to have that permanent guilty look that you get just after a missed penalty or own goal.

World Cup 2010 - South Africa, by Daniel Silk on May 30, 2010 17:26:46 GMT 1, Dint look too good against Japan today
I think Joe Hart looked pretty good in goal I think I have more confidence in him than James. Huddlestone looked a bit slow, and added very little on the way of going forward. Bent nah! I think a competition like this is way out of his league. I really really hope Walcott is in the final squad, I think he's pace could really blow teams apart late on in games nearer the end of the competition.

World Cup 2010 - South Africa, by I like pictures on May 30, 2010 22:44:09 GMT 1, shocking could be the only statement after tonight, japan scored three goals and lost 2-1. I thought we looked like the entire squad had run a marathon beofre the match. Walcott looked as good as he's looked looked in previous matches, rubbish! Although i do agree he unfortunately has to go to the world cup but not as a starter.

I thought bent did as well as he could, Rooney was awful in the 1st half which didnt help bent at all. I know id rather have bent than Heskey in the squad...given the chances Bent will score goals, something which can not be said about EH. I also think Walcott is out of his depth, with Lennon, SWP and Cole all far better than him.
What ever the squad is I cant wait for the games to begin.
