Kaws Pinocchio & Jiminy , by simonf on Sept 3, 2010 3:06:47 GMT 1, I wish I understood the attraction of these toys. No disrespect intended.
I don't think it is a display of disrespect not to understand the attraction of something... art is totally based on personal taste. If it makes you feel any better, I just don't get it at all either.
Sticking a face... (which is basically a trademark you have created), on to plastic figuirs which are the work of others... apparently endlessly seems the absolute zenith of easy self promotion.... (imo of course)
still as long as people like it and buy it then they are happy and of course so is the "artist"... and in the end that is what it is all that.
I would be interested to know others views on these objects... what it is they think is so good about them
It does however strikes me as a bit stange that possibly my favourite all time artist and visionary Vincent Van Gogh only managed to sell one painting in his whole life... and that was to his brother Theo.
and yet a plastic trademark stuck on to a plastic Pinochio sells by the bucket load...
still... I suppose that is the mystery of art...
if only plastic had been invented in Vincent's time, and he had stuck a few trademarks on to the shoulders of copies of popular statues, maybe he wouldn't have died pennyless lol

Kaws Pinocchio & Jiminy , by simonf on Sept 3, 2010 3:17:27 GMT 1, by the way I am making the assumption that it is perfectly ok not to like some art and to express this view on the forum.
if that is not the case, then please read the above post as:
"its absolute bleedin' genius and my advice is get your hard earned money out of your pocket and buy buy buy"

You are talking about a different time all together. If you are shocked People like kaws can sell there work, id love to know your opinions of the 'artists' that sell 'art' on here.
Your whole 'sticking a face on issuse' is no different to what warhol was doing in the 60's, so I guess its the works of warhol that allow a lot of our modern artists to make the work they do.
IMO Koons is another great product of the Warhol era, the art is product. I dont really try to comparethat far back as it really has no value for me. You are talking about different times, periods and social happenings.

Kaws Pinocchio & Jiminy , by Happy Shopper on Sept 3, 2010 12:14:04 GMT 1, I wish I understood the attraction of these toys. No disrespect intended.
I think you have to see them in the flesh. I didn't get them either until I saw a 4ft Dissected Companion, and the 3 16" versions at Dover Street Market (annoyingly they weren't for sale!). Combine the quality of those designs with a love of his street art work, and there you go. Awesomeness!
Obviously some of his figures are a bit crappy, compared to others, but that's the same with most artists. I'm sure most would agree that Banksy has hit and miss prints (all a matter of taste).
I'm not keen on anything Star Wars, or cartoon character related, but there's something about this Pinocchio figure that has "something"!

Kaws Pinocchio & Jiminy , by simonf on Sept 3, 2010 14:14:13 GMT 1, Hi Walshy, you took the words right out of my mouth with regards to Dface!... I was thinking of him while i was writing that last night... you are right he does exactly the same thing with his trademark. Seeing as i don't really get him either.. what is it with these trademarks?... a ball with two wings?.. beats me.
You say i was "shocked" by people liking Kaws... on the contrary I can't remember saying shock had anything to do with it... puzzlement would have been a better word to have superimposed on my post. I on the other hand am happy to celibrate the diverse tastes of people when it comes to art, I was simply wondering what it is with this particular artist that resonates with people, as I genuinely seem to be missing the point of it here.
I also don't quite know what you mean by "sticking a face on issuse' is no different to what warhol was doing in the 60's, "... eh?... I am not really too au fait with Warhol's work so that would probably explain why I don't get that point. I wasn't aware that warhol had a trademark he stuck on everything, but that is no doubt a reflection of my ignorance of his work rather than anything else. Koons has done some work I really like, and some I don't really respond to, but again I am no real expert in his work (or anything else for that matter!)
I am pretty much obsessed with art myself, and spend (as do most memebers of this forum) most of my time looking at it, filling my house with it, and bankrupting myself by buying it! But some artists I just don't "get" which is of course absolutely fine.
I suppose I was just interested in hearing from caws fans to enlighten me on what their emotional response to his pieces were, so that i could try and understand what it is that people like about him. There are so many artists I love, artists that evoke a visceral/emotional response in me... the first time i saw a love is in the air sprayed on a wall in shoredich I was stopped in my tracks, and my jaw dropped. On the other hand a star war figuir with a strange head, doesn't seem to do it for me on any level, but as I say that is the wonder of art.
I accept your point (and thank you for it) about art as a "product" though, and have to confess I hadn't really thought of that, and in the light of that then the Kaws pieces do make a bit more sense to me... but still don't really elicit any emotional response... which may indeed be the point.
And I wan't comparing Van Goch and Kaws as artists, I think most people would see that would be a ludicrous thing to do. I was jus comparing the large sales of this Kaws "product" (sold as art) and the absolute obsessive dedication of an artistic genius, who at the end of the day couldn't sell anything!
So when you say "You are talking about different times, periods and social happenings." I would agree with you... in a way that was my point.
But thank you for taking the time to reply, I appreciated it, and it has given me something to think about. oh and as for artists on this forum... some i like some i don't... depends which one really, but I understand the forum rules I have read, do not allow us to say anything that would damage an artists (or galleries) sales or reputation, so I would have to be very circumspect in any comments that I make.

Kaws Pinocchio & Jiminy , by walshy on Sept 3, 2010 15:13:58 GMT 1, I guess by comparing warhol to D/kaws with the whole 'sticking a face on' im saying the soup soup cans and all his screens are the same style.
You could argue that Warhols formula is tracing over photo's to make a photo his own for a screen. Like Kaws, x's for eyes and mickey gloves for hands or D's wings or decomposed faces.
Im still not sure if you will get what I mean, as I seemed to have confused myself now ;D
As you say though, its nice to get a reply that isnt shooting down our opinions

Kaws Pinocchio & Jiminy , by Gentle Mental on Sept 3, 2010 17:02:01 GMT 1, ya some template works better than others.
but each adds a filter over its subject and warps the original image's aesthetics and intentions. sometimes it even owns it.
each time the filter's applied, it grows like a brand (a twisted one) - giving it a "quality"
pick the one that works for you! enjoy it! each is a nice stop of a long journey.
don't feel angry or frustrated over the ease - over how easy it is done, and how anyone could've done it -
sometimes it's not just a one trick pony thing, it's how the artist grows to become the best in the world at this one trick

Kaws Pinocchio & Jiminy , by rosstierney on Sept 9, 2010 23:33:50 GMT 1, I'm a bit concerned to be honest. Asian eBay sellers are always first to get their hands on KAWS and their sales create artificial market values. Retailers are seeing how much they're selling for on eBay and off-loading their stock through the back door or increasing their prices. I know what they're doing is wrong but I blame the impatient buyers too. I've still got faith in a couple of retailers but what I'm really hoping for is the KAWSONE drop. It's not unusual for it to be a few weeks after the Asian drop.
