As above, if you're a fan of the image and don't want to pay a lot, why not just get one of the fake canvases off ebay? I think they've even got some in places like Ikea and Habitat these days!

If you're a genuine collector, then it would be well worth going for an official print for me!

I wouldnt say its a cheap way to get early prints, more like an expensive way to buy possible fakes. Not offended mate, just questioned as to your purchase. good luck!

I'd have to agree, I toyed with this idea sometime ago but just decided it better to put the money to one side and keep adding to it until I could afford a print that I knew would be genuine

A back door print is an unsigned unnumbered print that was printed on the same POW screens as the main run. You will never get authentication for them as they are never supposed to see the light of day, they came out 'the back door'.

FWIW if i were you i would save and buy a cheaper unsigned, there are lots that are really affordable at the moment. I would never be able to look at a 'fake' in the same way as the genuine article.

It baffles me that people are so accepting of this practice happening in the first place...

Again will happily bow to someones greater knowledge on the subject, however, I believe it is fairly standard to overprint a run in the expectation that some will be imperfect and some damaged. Anyone remember the Nola debacle?! These are meant to be destroyed later so that this exact scenario cant happen.

Wiz I dont think that it is the gallery flogging these as that would give them legitimacy. In fact I seem to recall an attempted prosecution involving an ex POW employee and backdoor prints.

Therein lies the problem though, even if only 25 'genuine' backdoor prints made it out (excuse the oxymoron!) there is no way to distinguish or verify these from any other fake out there. So any possible 'notorious value' disappears.

Until recently, the backdoors ( ie from the same printer as the officials ) were readily available from a couple of ebay sellers.Thye seemed to have dried up now, in the wake of the recent fakes trial

I checked out a couple over the past decade & apart from the number & sig, they exactly the same as the official ones and one of these sellers had multiples of some classic early prints - was offered any 3 for 150.The 25 quoted above only related to a POW issue.

There was no deception, they were blank & not immaculate & were being sold as extras/ overruns/ back doors blah blah blah.

I wonder where they have all gone ?

If i was waiting outside the back door, id pay probably more but with the fake market as it is i wouldnt touch one!! I saw one today in a mates shed cut down to fit the apex of the roof, deckaled edges and every thing, had a fit, until he said it was fake!! Laugh i nearly shat and there we are back to the backdoor!! Touche!!
