Nick Walker "Corancan" Street Art in Paris, by curiousgeorge on Mar 24, 2010 13:47:59 GMT 1, I just don't get Nick's message... How should this image be interpreted ? I walked past that piece the other day and talked with several people about it and none of them seemed to know what it actually meant ! What does it defend and what does it criticize ? It might look quite offensive or mocking... Is it in favour or against the burka, in favour or against the potential ban ? And that "french cancan" thing only exists in tourist traps like the Moulin Rouge or Lido, it can hardly be considered as a French tradition... I dunno, it's hard to know what to think about this stencil...
Is he trying to say no matter what clothing or skin colour, 'we are all French'?

Or is he saying if muslim women kicked up their skirts and reveal their private parts in a traditional cancan manner, will they then be accepted and given the same rights? dunno, but it is thought provoking - so I like it! when's the print release? ;D

Nick Walker "Corancan" Street Art in Paris, by Daniel Silk on Mar 24, 2010 16:56:25 GMT 1,
My point is that I don't understand why anyone would have a problem with Nick's Piece, when I don't remember anyone saying anything against Banksy's.
I think Nick Walkers piece in Paris is great! and is all about getting people talking, as good street art should be
Do you not think so Art-el?

Nick Walker "Corancan" Street Art in Paris, by Art-el on Mar 24, 2010 17:20:03 GMT 1, If that was you're point and what you were trying to say (without words!) then step up and state it clearly. Just SOLELY posting a picture of Banksy's work adds nothing to the debate and just glaringly lacks clarity.
People can't read your mind Dan

I'm calmer than Lake Placid.
I have't a clue what you mean by ''You seem to be searching for problems that don't exist''

Nick Walker "Corancan" Street Art in Paris, by seerkind on Mar 24, 2010 20:26:40 GMT 1, I actually don't think this one is that bad once executed. Surprsed he'd do something so similar to so many before him as Art-el pointed out. Let's be honest though, he's not big on ideas really and I can't believe this one Let's not forget the TMA idea rehashed however many times. Great execution though...... just as well.
interesting.......why one artist needs to put down another artists work baffles me.

Must suck to be an artist. Suddenly everyone expects you to have no opinion on art. And you lose all your right to have an opinion.
And presumably why pple become an artist is to express themselves and their opinions through art.
weird world huh.

Nick Walker "Corancan" Street Art in Paris, by Jef Aerosol on Mar 25, 2010 2:08:08 GMT 1, Is he trying to say no matter what clothing or skin colour, 'we are all French'?[/quote]
well, this burka issue goes much farther than "clothing" or "skin colour"... it goes far beyond the question of "being all French" too... It's mainly a matter of women's condition, rights and freedom, it's a question of religion, of integrism, etc... and the debate about the burka divides all parties : it isn't "rightists think this and leftists think that" at all, it's much more complex than that... this is why Nick's image can look quite confusing and can be interpreted in almost opposite ways...

I'm with Jeff on this, I've travelled a lot and am very open minded, for me this piece was offensive to Muslim women, to the point of being extremely crass. I found it more offensive than I did thought provoking.
Now as for Banksy's piece, I found it less offensive, and more thought provoking. If you'd put the two pieces in front of me with no idea who'd painted them I'd have gone the same way, I'm not one for blind Banksy worship, and to be honest think the most of his newer work is a pile of tat.

Yeh that's exactly what I am saying. What makes you a good judge of ideas? You an account director for a leading agency selling original ideas for big bucks to major brands?......I think not. Don't be so self rightious about something you clearly know nothing about.
