Banksy Wanted up to £5k Please., by Poppy Sunshine on Oct 11, 2010 16:37:20 GMT 1, I have been entrusted by a family member to invest up to £5k of their hard earned on art.
I suggested that to save a little time it would be easier to narrow down to Banksy only.
Reasons being that Banksy would be pretty easy to get hold of, should be a good investment, and would probably be the easiest artist to sell if their financial position changed and the cash was required again.
So, any suggestions or offers?
Thanks.

Banksy Wanted up to £5k Please., by mmmike on Oct 11, 2010 17:14:33 GMT 1, My suggestion is don't invest in art. It is a terrible investment. Even worse if you are talking about prints and such rather than "fine art".

Even worse if you are talking about prints and such rather than "fine art". LOL I've not bought a sinlge print that's worth less than I paid for it, most are worth 3/4 times their initial price. (and only one of those prints is a Banksy, the rest aren't such bankable names.)
I think you're probably in a very small minority there; I've done quite well out of art I have bought, some luck and some good judgement, but have still bought plenty that has decreased in value.
Do you offer an advisory service?
EDIT: I almost think this deserves it's own thread as it's something that's worth discussing.

I did point out the pitfalls but they have been admiring and sharing the pleasure of my art for so long they have come to think that something nice on the wall is the way to go rather than all the other boring and low interest rate potential investments out there right now.
Other suggestions are always welcome though.

Fair play to them! I agree whole heartedly.

Banksy Wanted up to £5k Please., by Deleted on Oct 11, 2010 19:12:51 GMT 1, Do you still own them all? Every sinlge one?
The thread reads 'I have been entrusted'. There's nothing wrong with putting a percentage of any investment pool into art, quite the reverse as a spread of investments is usually recommended.
To buy Banksy, now, could be compared to buying Gold now. A brave investment......

Banksy Wanted up to £5k Please., by Daniel Silk on Oct 11, 2010 19:35:07 GMT 1, I have been entrusted by a family member to invest up to £5k of their hard earned on art. So, any suggestions or offers? Thanks.
Had a similar request from a relative a few years back had 1.5k to play with, and left it totally up to me on the purchases. The collection is now over x20 the original value, so they are pretty pleased I think
I cant think of anything I have ever bought that has gone down in value I'm always very careful as I cant afford to be spending money on things that are over their true value. Buy what you like and never follow the crowd especially years after the crowd has been and gone.
Good luck!

Banksy Wanted up to £5k Please., by zane on Oct 11, 2010 19:42:05 GMT 1, Is everyone convinced then that with Banksy the only way is up?
I used to think that but the art world is a fickle place. I suppose too much money is invested in him now to go down too much.
To make true money though you need to buy at the bottom. That boat has long sailed with Banksy.

If money is all thats important, then I would say Banksy needs to battle away now to find new customers in order to keep his values level or rising. Are the trips to America, Film, The Simpsons a sign of that? maybe
Could he have reached the limit of his customer base here in the UK/Europe? How much higher can he really rise in the Art World? thats the BIG question.

1st point = pointless question (no offense ) as everyone has different views
2nd point = I'm not convinced that it won't go down because people have invested in it; I may be wrong but Banksy's longevity is only pretty much guaranteed when the big boys wade in, which is unlikely to happen
3rd point = there's huge scope for price increases in Banksy's if he's accepted by the 'establishment' and is collected by those with the big money
4th point = I may be wrong in everything I've just said

I'm intrigued as to what Silky bought back in 2007 (a few years) for £1.5K which is now worth £30K ( x 20)?

Banksy Wanted up to £5k Please., by Ottomatik on Oct 12, 2010 4:29:26 GMT 1, If I had 5K to spend... I'd purchase 2 Banksy u/s prints. Queen Vic (1.3k) and Rude Copper (2.5k). With the other 1.2k, I'd commission a Miss Bugs. As for future investment, I don't purchase prints for the profit. However, with the Bingo Night show at NIA, I can imagine that Marsea and Amber have great things for MB. They (New Image Art) have done great things for Judith Supine, Faile, and Bast. (to name a few...)

Banksy Wanted up to £5k Please., by stevieray101 on Oct 12, 2010 10:23:54 GMT 1, just my 2 cents... (sorry to hijack your thread!)
i'd wait for the next Banksy release, usually the flippers sell them on ebay for about £1k above cost price. so a print that's £450 will sell for about £1550ish maybe more. hold on to that for a year and you could probably sell it on here for about £1900
that's close to a 20% return in purely investment terms, which compared to something like a cash ISA is amazing.
i don't think we'll see the likes of sepia morons selling for £4k on ebay for a while, I might be wrong but there's no info in the market to suggest that. the prices of 2-3 years ago are gone... for now and the credit crunch certainly hasn't helped the art market.

Banksy Wanted up to £5k Please., by Ottomatik on Oct 12, 2010 13:12:25 GMT 1, 'I don't purchase prints for the profit.' Righto.
Maybe, I should have been more careful with wording. I guess we ALL think about 'a brave investment' (your quote) of a print when we purchase. I did purchase a MBW print for $329. A year later sold it for $1.6k, so I stand corrected. In my defense, it helped me purchase 2 Miss Bugs from NIA.
Stalkerstud, you need to get off my arse, I already have a partner. Seriously dude, I think you have a crush on me, it seems every time I post you feel the necessity to comment in the negative. It might be easier to get over your crush if you just click on the ignore icon to your left. I do think you need to simmer down with the hypocrisy. Unless you sell your prints for original cost, then stop pointing your finger at me. You've sold a Banksy or 2, at cost, right? Seems you're not invested in your investment either, Banksy has no prints over 9 years old. ---- Poppy, good luck with your purchase! It's always fun to buy other people art! ---- Howlin-I thought someone sold a Rude Copper for around $3K in the last 6 months.

Banksy Wanted up to £5k Please., by Deleted on Oct 12, 2010 17:18:17 GMT 1, I'd like to apologise for my 'stalking' of Otto. For the record, I have no wish to get on his arse (I'm more of a front door man myself, with Mrs Lurkers or one of her mates, not that fussy) so I'll leave that to his partner. I'm so old fashioned and should really live a little.
Once in a while a do sell a print, last one was a WSM which I bought in 2004 and sold for more than £210 (cost). I think the one before that was maybe a star eyes (which I sold for cost...).
I promise not to stalk or point out anyone's disingenuous streak in future.
Just to bury the hatchet, I've given your sales thread a bump, nice Star Eyes by the way.
And, most of all, best of luck in finding some quality art at quality prices PS - I'm sure you'll be super careful in choosing your families bits and bobs.
