Bidendum - The New Way to Buy and Sell Banksys, by Heavyconsumer on Oct 29, 2008 18:05:10 GMT 1, Lets keep everything positive and helpful please Sounds like a very complex system to attempt setting up so Im sure he is gonna welcome help and advise.
Agreed Silky, it must be a complex operation with a great many considerations that each require mulling over and getting right, before presenting to target market.
While it's nice to try and keep things as positive as possibe and be supportive of members of the community setting up a new business (in any field), especially one which could potentially benefit the community as a whole, Bibendum did not come in here and start a thread saying "We're thinking of setting up the ultimate Banksy print trading platform, this is what we've got so far, what do you think, we'd be grateful for any thoughts and suggestions." Bibendum did come in with the slogan "The New Way" and a platform which is allegedly good to go, but seem to have done so slightly haphazardly by the looks of it.
It's all very well to say let's not pick all these holes in it, but if they'd gone about things a bit more openly (the undisclosed previous username and deleted posts issue breeds suspicion) and a lot more thoroughly, as they should have done, there would be less holes to pick.
As stated, I think there is the potential for a teriffic product in the idea, as I'm sure most of us have at some time wished there were safer ways of buying and selling without paranoia of getting stitched up. I also think the website looks great! But I think it's pretty fair for members to react in a natural and honest fashion, once this has been presented in the most public part of the forum. I mean that's kind of what a forum is.
And so far there isn't a good reason to pay these guys 10% and trust them any more than you would trust any other forum member. In fact I'd go so far as to suggest that the more links in the chain, the greater the chance of the print getting damaged in the process of any sale and there is as yet no evidence to support the claim that this service will have a positive impact on pricing for the buyer. Lots of claims, little proof and a steep fee to boot, just because they'll remove the print from the tube, look at it and then organize the same certificate we can all arrange ourselves, which we'd still pay the same fee for. I'm trying to find positives, but it's tough!
Yes the one improvement is that the buyer will only pay upon receipt of the promised item, but I can't find benefits to sellers, or a reason to trust them anymore than anyone else.

Bidendum - The New Way to Buy and Sell Banksys, by baileymontana on Oct 29, 2008 18:10:24 GMT 1, I'm all for being positive but when a business starts implying they have the tacit approval of POW and Pest Control and give a politicians answer before admitting they don't.... this sets alarm bells ringing to me.

Bidendum - The New Way to Buy and Sell Banksys, by Curley on Oct 29, 2008 18:28:57 GMT 1, Positive and helpful is good but i think potential customers have the right ask as many awkward questions as they like before they decide to trust some one with their print and or their bank details.

Bidendum - The New Way to Buy and Sell Banksys, by mydeaddogwontwoof on Oct 29, 2008 19:07:18 GMT 1, The past user of the account "alibertine" wanted the posts deleted before we changed account name as he was not aware up until a few months ago that Bidendum would be launched as as such did not wish his comments to reflect upon the company (although im sure none of them would have been to its determent anyway) Coulda set up a new account, no?I think the comment (paraphrasing) about Banksy being over (or done, I forget) from a couple of pages back may not have been the best PR
Or maybe of used your tonycoe1 account...

Paypal ensures that the payment is only taken once the print has been recieved by Bidendum. This should offer far more security than other transactional means as well as linking buyers and sellers in an attempt to reflect true and current market prices.

Bidendum - The New Way to Buy and Sell Banksys, by sammyboy999 on Oct 29, 2008 23:22:49 GMT 1, Bibendum. You're offering a great service.
I've thought for a while now that a system like this would be great for the Urban Art Market. As things stand, the only safe way to buy or sell prints is to do so in person, but even then you couldn't guarantee not picking up a fake. Bibendum is a service that takes the hard work of checking authentication and the reliance on 'trust' out of the system.
As a user of Betfair, i also think your interface is a great idea.
I think you have a great business model, but i would suggest that your commission rates are on the high side for a start up business. Don't be greedy. Build up a reputation/brand first and then increase your rates to profitable levels!
Bibendum. You're offering a great service.

Bidendum - The New Way to Buy and Sell Banksys, by achtungbono on Oct 29, 2008 23:39:25 GMT 1, rapacious, underhand and explotitative - given recent probems/ hype about fakes - preying on people fears is the one of the worst ways to make a living
I could understand if there was some kind of Philanphropical aspect to this, but amongst the s**tty spelling ( and I dont profess to be a good speller, but then again I am not running a business based on me grammr & Press releases) , there is an underlying , grasping greed aspect that I find distasteful and symptomatic of the whole aftermarket Banksy market Its a shame you spent so much time/ money on the site - it could have been used to better effect

Bidendum - The New Way to Buy and Sell Banksys, by classy on Oct 29, 2008 23:41:44 GMT 1, Thanks all. This has been a surprisingly entertaining thread.
Is it possible that the partners in Bidendum are really in the forgery business and they have set up this website and begun the thread in an intentional effort to either: 1) get the prints from sellers, obtain a pest control COA and then pass off a forged print with a real COA to an unsuspecting buyer; or 2) make everyone think the possibility of fakes is quite remote and then use one of their many pseudonyms to start sending their fakes into a now less-suspecting market?
