Surely this is just hypocrisy... If this happened before banksy became a household name and part of the art establishment they would have probably been let off.
I'm so glad you said this Cartrain, now I don't feel so bad about all the fake Cartains I've been flogging.

They were buying genuine banksy's to get the genuine provenance. they then faked the print and copied the provenance so it all seemed above board when selling. i only queried when the unsigned gansta rat was the wrong edition size. i mean of all the bloody things to get yourself caught! wot an f'in numpty So were they faking Pest Control COAs?   That is really worrying, as there could still be prints out there that aren't real but which people believe have provenance.  Better reason than ever to go via reputable sellers on this forum, rather than ebay. 
Yep. I completely agree. From what I have heard there will be a lot of prints of this nature out there. Hopefully the police will catch up with all the people who purchased from ebay but that won't cover anybody who bought elsewhere. Scary really.

By the nature of the print releases and the sheer number of people interested in his work, it seems that fraud would would be lucritive in the short run.
With that said, maybe this explains the various signatures noted in another thread. Has Banksy really morphed his signature? Or, is this the work of the fraudsters?
Also, I would wager some galleries may be holding some fake prints.
I've been trying to understand the Banksy print market by reading the threads here and searching Ebay and the galleries.

I only found out it was a fake two weeks ago, by which time the seller's account was closed down. I would never have known it was fake until the police contacted me. In a way I wish they hadn't....ignorance is bliss!

Also - Please remember that this has yet to go to court, so it would be best to keep any sweeping statements off the thread - best not to potentially predujice any court hearing through the dissemination of bogus or misleading info - this ensures that the verdict has the best change of going the right way & the likelyhood of compensation significantly raised
There is still a civil route that can be taken should Crown Court not go the way some say it should & that would use the Balance of probabailities to come to a decison, as opposed to the abolute proof required for a firm Crown Court conviction. I will raise this issue again later in the year when we are in a better positons to guage the success or not of the case

There are certain circumstances when you can claim the money back but it depends on a number of things. As mentioned above, probably best to discuss this after the court case.

IF you have been involved in this & have recieved a statement & compensation claim form from the fuzz, ensure you get it filled in and despatched as soon as possible back to them with decent numbners and any evidence you can to back up your claim
Compensation can only be awarded by Crown Court on the basis of a guilty verdict and at the request of the judge - as much paperwork as possible will make it easier to have any sequestered assets used to cover any compensation awards
Fainling this, any paperwork submitted to court to back up a claim could be used in a civil action later in the day, if the inital result is not as hoped.
