well, with your design background, you really should check out the Design Museum. Plus it's open late this Friday until 10pm.

FRIEZE Art Fair , by insite on Oct 4, 2007 18:38:52 GMT 1, Saw this today in the Guardian, thought it might interest those of you who are going along. Defacing the Queens head isn't that treason or something? ;D arts.guardian.co.uk/art/news/story/0,,2182932,00.html
Jake and Dinos Chapman have never been known to eschew the opportunity to inject a little chaos into a situation. This month's Frieze art fair at Regent's Park in London will be no exception. The Chapman brothers - most famous for their disturbing artwork Hell, which went up in flames in the Momart warehouse fire in 2004 - will spend much of the fair sitting at the stand of their gallery, White Cube.
Hand them any kind of English paper money - a fiver, a tenner, a ยฃ50 note, anything so long as it has the Queen's head on it - and they will draw on it for you. They'll give you back the note, now worth many times more than your original outlay, and with the monarch's visage defaced. "Apart from the fact that it's lazy," said Dinos Chapman, "I prefer drawing on other people's work. The scene is set, and you have to respond. It's not a wheeze, it's a very serious project. It's free art, and people don't give away art very often."
Last year the Chapmans set up a small studio at the fair and painted punters' portraits for ยฃ4,000 a time. "This is the opposite of that," said Dinos Chapman. "That was the equivalent of a posh Harley Street clinic. This is like a drop-in centre in Hackney Wick. We're reversing capitalism, just a bit." He said they would be looking with interest at the way the Frieze crowds reacted during the fair, from October 11-14: "Orderly queues have a propensity to turn into baying hordes." That certainly happened last year when the crowds cottoned on to the Chapmans' portraits.
He conceded the hint of showmanship about the project. "Most of the things we do skirt dangerously close to fairground attractions," he said. "It's not an unwelcome comparison. We're happy to drag artists off their pedestals."

Phone around the galleries who'll be there, they often have quite a few guest passes.

FRIEZE Art Fair , by Happy Shopper on Oct 18, 2008 19:02:51 GMT 1, I'm surprised there isn't a thread for this already... or am I missing it?
Went today and was a bit disappointed really. Few nice pictures but the rest was very dull.
Highlight though was Jake Chapman signing his new book, at the White Cube Gallery stand, and Dinos signing random books from charity shops. Very funny and nice to meet them.

FRIEZE Art Fair , by Pure Evil on Oct 18, 2009 12:28:00 GMT 1, In my new role as the Banksy Forum contemporary art critic (just kidding) I have spent the whole week deep in the contemporary art trenches so you dont have to and I have checked out both fairs and here is my conclusion ...
WTF ?
A lot of people are making a lot of stuff that LOOKS like art but it doesnt do Sheeit for me.
There were a few exceptions however. The galleries I liked checking out were Perez projects especially Dan Colen
and Jack Hanley gallery is a wicked place in SF that has Chris Johansen artworks for sale. I get the impression that Jack Hanley himself is a total dude and does it because he loves the art ... www.jackhanley.com/
I saw a really nice photo of James Bond Islands by Andreas Gursky but it was $450,000 so i didnt buy it...I think its still available if anyones interested.
ZOO art fair was a bit confusing i didnt understand it although there were some really cool cut up books by Georgia Russel.
i went on a mini bus tour of east end galleries in Vyner street and Whitechapel which was sorted out by FRIEZE and I checked out the new DR Lakra show at Kate McGarry on Vyner st which is pretty cool although i prefer his older stuff its groovier.
The funniest part was going into the gallery opposite that show where there was a bunch of plastic plants in the middle of the room and the curator was explaining their meaning to two people... It cracks me up how dumb people are sometimes.
The whole weekend made me very happy i do graffiti with my bro's and I like to get up on scaffolding and get covered in paint and I don't have to deal too much with the contemporary art world its a strange place.

FRIEZE Art Fair , by monkeyballs on Oct 18, 2009 13:00:48 GMT 1, Did you get the VIP card then? Lots and lots of events around frieze, I think its a great event, because it links all contemporary art together with a really broad array of events and talks lined up all across London.
I liked the fair more this year, it was for me at least, far more aimed at selling art than in previous years. I bloody loved the photo of London made entirely out of stainless steel kitchen equipment. I also liked Dawn Mellor's stuff on the team gallery stand.
There was far less pretentious crap installation work and far more small and reasonably priced (relatively speaking) work than there had been previously.
