Banksy - Shepard Fairey, by absyrd on Feb 25, 2007 19:06:32 GMT 1, You have to remember that Perry Ferell is as burnt-out as a person could possibly be.
I don't hold his inability to retain information against him. In fact, I like him.

Banksy - Shepard Fairey, by ptron on Feb 26, 2007 2:57:37 GMT 1, I think Shep is putting on a good face. Banksy kind of dogs him on his website, with the whole
"i don't make shirts because it would feel like the painting was a guerilla marketing campaign for a fashion label."
I could be wrong, but I have trouble seeing those two as friends.

Banksy - Shepard Fairey, by Ripper1331 on Feb 26, 2007 3:43:25 GMT 1, Banksy and Shep went over each other on that billboard swapping sides of the sign.
I don't think Banksy is taking a swipe at him with the t-shirt comment. Both are artists and both have different goals and objectives but both happen to be street based. Plenty of room for both to coexist.

Banksy - Shepard Fairey, by BK83 on Feb 26, 2007 4:29:00 GMT 1, actually they are friends. Shep has worked with Banksy on a few pieces in LA and Shep interviewed Banksy for Swindle. I was just pointing out that it was pretty neat that someone caught all those guys helping Shep put up that piece and that possibly Banksy is amongst them.

Banksy - Shepard Fairey, by ptron on Feb 26, 2007 4:32:38 GMT 1, So now I'm curious...
If not Shep, then who's Banksy taking a swipe at with the T-shirt comment?
And is going over anothers work really friendly? I mean I understand if it got buffed first, but while it's still there seems a bit like a pissing contest. Maybe it's a friendly pissing contest. Just don't cross the streams.

Banksy - Shepard Fairey, by ptron on Feb 26, 2007 4:39:45 GMT 1, Maybe I'm crazy, but the guy on the top of the building in Shep pic looks like this guy in the background here from the Barely Legal Show, is that MBW?:
www.flickr.com/photos/hustlerofculture/246000090/
My memory is a little fuzzy but I think I remember this guy was filming a whole bunch at the LA show, as if for a documentary purposes or something.
So jaypaav, maybe you're right about the Banksy connection here.
And some f**ker gave me a minus. Sorry for trying to spur debate!

Banksy - Shepard Fairey, by Pure Evil on Feb 26, 2007 8:59:18 GMT 1, Shep makes about 2 million bucks a year from licensing OBEY to a clothing manufacturer...
I dont think his street actions are a guerilla marketing campaign for a fashion label, the 2 just raise awareness for each other... Im sure some people who wear OBEY have no idea who Shep is, they just like the logos...
To contradict totally what I just said you could argue though, that of course his large works around Melrose shopping area in LA are guerilla marketing campaigns and he is totally aware of that fact, which is why its ok for Banksy to say ...
"i don't make shirts because it would feel like the painting was a guerilla marketing campaign for a fashion label."
Remember this is America, money is GOD.

Banksy - Shepard Fairey, by Ripper1331 on Feb 26, 2007 10:11:38 GMT 1, I think that Sheps success with Obey is a result of the street activity and years of pushing it. I'm sure that when he first started he didn't think "This sticker will get my shirts into Nordstromโs one day..."
Both Banksy and Shep are working artists how much they make and how they make it are completely different for each of them but at the end of the day they support themselves on their art and are both very successful. Isn't that the goal of any anyone artist or not?
I think that at this point most of Sheps work now could be veiwed as a marketing campaign because he's successful but at the end of the day I'm sure he'd still be doing it even if Obey wasn't well known. That's what artists do - keep pushing their ideas, popular, profitable, or not. Lord knows I keep going even if nobodies paying attention.
Come on Evil you know that money is god everywhere - not just America

i think it's probably all those numptys on ebay that produce banksy t shirts but wear balaclavas to hide their faces in the product pictures....
Mr B gives some stuff away for free and peope take advantage for their own monetary gains...
