What Music are you listening to at the moment ?, by mandem on Mar 22, 2024 12:55:39 GMT 1, I am off to Berlin tomorrow to see Underworld play at Velodrom. How was the show? Not seen UW for about 15 years, need to work on that.
And today,I'm listening to this rework of the classic track 'yeke yeke'. Paul Dakyne has done a great job, keeping the faith to the Hardfloor 303 lines, but dropping a lot more vocal from the Mory Kante original into it. Bone fide banger; turn it up.

What a tune that was. Not 100% sure this new version completely does it for me, but it's still decent. Puts a smile on your face.

The show was absolutely fantastic- solid in the top 3 ever Underworld gigs ( and I attend a lot of those ) Velodrome Berlin is an epic and perfect venue, Underworld were clearly in a great mood and the concertgoers were very euphoric ( the relaxed attitude towards recreational drugs in Berlin certainly helped to bring back the old school rave feeling ) sound and visuals were top notch, as usual.
Curious how the gig in Alexandra Palace will be..
Go see them it you can.

It's also the full length set, which is a bonus. If you're into this era, this is a DJ mix I did a couple of years ago. Lots of classics on here: on.soundcloud.com/axYC1wqPsEctGurL8

What Music are you listening to at the moment ?, by LJCal on Apr 7, 2024 2:54:00 GMT 1, I expect the collecting compulsions extends past art for many on here, how many people collect vinyl? That was really the first thing for me, at one point I had about 10,000 records, slimmed this down to about 3,000 but been buying back a lot of music I sold for about 20X the price over the past few years.

Absolutely. Was buying vinyl at the age of 17 - spending every Saturday in the West End record shops, but didn't buy my first piece of art until my very late 20s - prints from The Designers Republic, in Sheffield, which I became aware of via records anyway.
Still buying (and selling) records now. Similarly to you, I went up to ridiculous quantities at one point, had around 12,000 - now stripped back to just the one Kallax 4x2 - all killer no filler.
Vinyl value is on the increase, as hipster value goes up.
This is the story of my late teens and early twenties:

Vinyl value is on the increase, as hipster value goes up. This is the story of my late teens and early twenties: Vinyl is seriously addictive. It's mad how hipsters have started buying it, when I was growing up it was mainly nerds and outcasts going to record shops. Even in the 90s a lot of kind of "normal" friends found it strange buying vinyl. Obviously the rave and hip hop scene is what kept it relevant but as massive as these became they were still outside the mainstream for most of the 90s. The main thing I miss these days is the social element of going to the small independent record shop and meeting heads all into the same things. Discogs is obviously amazing but I do miss the shops.

You reminded me about all those great little hidden indie record shops in London's Soho, where many a bootleg found its way into the basket!
Just on Saturday I went to one of the few stores left and got myself the Velvet Underground & Nico 'Warhol Banana' album, which I always knew about, but never actually owned before. Just the owner and one customer were present and it is wonderful how quickly you can get into an interesting conversation about music, art and songs - we spoke about Warhol, The Factory and Lou Reed, which led to David Bowie (who was good mates with Lou) and then also Nico; the shop owner thought she sounded even worse than Yoko, which is debatable to say the least ;-)
Anyway, social interaction cannot be surpassed and makes for a happy frame of mind.

What Music are you listening to at the moment ?, by Acme Thunderer on Apr 8, 2024 9:30:21 GMT 1, I love the reminiscing of vinyl buying in the 90s. I used to take regular trips to London to buy 10-20 records at a time. The FOMO was just as bad back then when buying records after just 10 seconds when a shop played tracks to everyone at the same time. 😀
My favourite places were Zoom in Camden and Unity in Soho. I’ve still got this poster on my wall from 1993.

Ask Zappa, he will tell you that Yoko was worst than Nico. He disliked Nico and Velvet very much, he even took the stage at VU concert imitating Nico But anyway, "Zappa's band was as shitty as the Velvet Underground" (the famous spoken segment censored on all subsequent copies of "We're only in it for the money". Zappa and VU really disliked each other; “Frank Zappa is the most untalented musician I’ve ever heard. He can’t play rock ‘n’ roll because he’s a loser.” say Lou Reed.. and VU guitarist: “If you told Frank Zappa to eat shit in public, he’d do it if it sold records. I would do it if I liked to.”. So the music world was shocked when Lou Reed posthumously inducted Frank Zappa into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995.
John Lennon was a big fan of Zappa so when he moved to NY, he met Zappa and they did some live show in NY. They did a song called "Scum Bag", during which they shout "scum bad" over King Kong (a famous Zappa song). Yoko shouted during the all song, to a point that they put a bag on her head and even John told her to shut up during live song. Both Zappa and Lennon agreed to use the recordings for their own album. Later on, Lennon took the scumbag song and marled it as created by Lennon and Yoko (knowing very well the notes are a Zappa song). Things turned nasty, Zappa going live on TV telling John stole his composition.
David Bowie took Zappa's guitarist while touring Germany. Zappa was unhappy so he went to Bowie in the restaurant and said "Fuck you Captain Tom"

Just the owner and one customer were present and it is wonderful how quickly you can get into an interesting conversation about music, art and songs - we spoke about Warhol, The Factory and Lou Reed, which led to David Bowie (who was good mates with Lou) and then also Nico; the shop owner thought she sounded even worse than Yoko, which is debatable to say the least ;-) Anyway, social interaction cannot be surpassed and makes for a happy frame of mind.
