What Music are you listening to at the moment ?, by alberti on Apr 8, 2024 11:02:19 GMT 1, Vinyl is seriously addictive. It's mad how hipsters have started buying it, when I was growing up it was mainly nerds and outcasts going to record shops. Even in the 90s a lot of kind of "normal" friends found it strange buying vinyl. Obviously the rave and hip hop scene is what kept it relevant but as massive as these became they were still outside the mainstream for most of the 90s. The main thing I miss these days is the social element of going to the small independent record shop and meeting heads all into the same things. Discogs is obviously amazing but I do miss the shops. You reminded me about all those great little hidden indie record shops in London's Soho, where many a bootleg found its way into the basket! Just on Saturday I went to one of the few stores left and got myself the Velvet Underground & Nico 'Warhol Banana' album, which I always knew about, but never actually owned before. Just the owner and one customer were present and it is wonderful how quickly you can get into an interesting conversation about music, art and songs - we spoke about Warhol, The Factory and Lou Reed, which led to David Bowie (who was good mates with Lou) and then also Nico; the shop owner thought she sounded even worse than Yoko, which is debatable to say the least ;-) Anyway, social interaction cannot be surpassed and makes for a happy frame of mind. Ask Zappa, he will tell you that Yoko was worst than Nico. He disliked Nico and Velvet very much, he even took the stage at VU concert imitating Nico But anyway, "Zappa's band was as shitty as the Velvet Underground" (the famous spoken segment censored on all subsequent copies of "We're only in it for the money". Zappa and VU really disliked each other; โFrank Zappa is the most untalented musician Iโve ever heard. He canโt play rock โnโ roll because heโs a loser.โ say Lou Reed.. and VU guitarist: โIf you told Frank Zappa to eat shit in public, heโd do it if it sold records. I would do it if I liked to.โ. So the music world was shocked when Lou Reed posthumously inducted Frank Zappa into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995.
John Lennon was a big fan of Zappa so when he moved to NY, he met Zappa and they did some live show in NY. They did a song called "Scum Bag", during which they shout "scum bad" over King Kong (a famous Zappa song). Yoko shouted during the all song, to a point that they put a bag on her head and even John told her to shut up during live song. Both Zappa and Lennon agreed to use the recordings for their own album. Later on, Lennon took the scumbag song and marled it as created by Lennon and Yoko (knowing very well the notes are a Zappa song). Things turned nasty, Zappa going live on TV telling John stole his composition.
David Bowie took Zappa's guitarist while touring Germany. Zappa was unhappy so he went to Bowie in the restaurant and said "Fuck you Captain Tom"

What Music are you listening to at the moment ?, by Beetle Bum on Apr 8, 2024 13:15:59 GMT 1, The new album from Bill Ryder-Jones is a work of beauty, this video is based on the front cover artwork for his new album. He spotted a painting that was done in this little Scottish village and asked could he use it for his album cover art. He has also produced the 2 most recent Michael Head albums which are also superb.

What Music are you listening to at the moment ?, by Onket on Apr 12, 2024 8:32:16 GMT 1, Today I will mostly be listening to Orbital.
Their UK tour playing the Green & Brown albums starts next weekend and I'm going to see them the week after that.
Anyone else going?

Me too and each time I see them they get better and better. First time was by happy accident at the Moth Club in Hackney ...the drummer was in the middle of the audience draped in full camo leaf. Whenever I listen to them on you tube PWEI & The Fall enter the feed...which is a very good look IMO.
