WTB: Anything Invader, Banksy or Mr. Brainwash, by Yervi on Nov 5, 2010 20:56:24 GMT 1, Hey guys I am sort of new to this scene. I am mainly a collecter of designer vinyl and Shepard Fairey art. Always been a huge fan of Banksy and Invader and want to start getting into collecting it.
I am looking to purchase anything by Invader, Banksy or Mr. Brainwash. I mainly want signed prints but will consider anything. I'm a college student so I cant go crazy and consider the $1,000 + pieces but anything below that mark.
Thanks a lot you guys and I can already see this is a great community to be a part of. Any help for a newbie would greatly be appreciated! ;D

Thanks again guys.

just ask if the seller has dealt with anyone on here, usually a lot have so you can then ask the other members. if they have a large post count and have had sale threads in the past maybe this would gain some more trust. just dont rush into anything but from my experience i havn't dealt with anyone shifty. pay by credit card if you can, or paypal as your protected (as they say).

WTB: Anything Invader, Banksy or Mr. Brainwash, by raiden on Nov 17, 2010 23:14:01 GMT 1, If I can provide my two cents, if you're looking to have art that appreciates in value, buy originals from up and comers. If art that appreciates is your goal, I would stay away from prints by MBW and Invader. More MBW than Invader, because MBW is flooding his market. If you do buy MBW, go with his most iconic prints, which may retain their value longer.
I'd contact Dreweatts to see if they have any post auction past lots you can get on the cheap from their print sale.
Don't race to buy stuff and go for quality over quantity.
Some of the original Banksy poster prints with some level of provenance are probably good gambles. Clearly these aren't able to be Pest Control Authenticated since they're not signed and numbered - but a receipt from Bristol Museum etc. is enough.
I stopped buying art for the moment, but can give you some suggestions from this thread:
If you like it, buy wizbong's Guy Denning original for any price under $800 USD. Its a small original canvas and not my favorite piece by him, but its a wise purchase: cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220694321644&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT#ht_548wt_1141
I'd look to more of the post stencil Urban Artists: David Choe, Will Barras, Guy Denning.
In the last year, there have been fewer artists breaking out and the entire market got super heated by rampant speculation.
Obviously a $1000 is not a ton of money, but you can pick up pieces that failed to sell at some galleries and have sit in inventory which are just awesome buys. (Not Invader who is a Lazarides artist, or Bansky or MBW, but others who are at their level) And some you can buy them at 40% of what their original price was.
I won't give away too much more free advice, but know that most people make really poor choices when you first start collecting. The sooner you learn the history of art pricing and get smart to how and why certain artists become hot, the more you'll avoid the mistakes.

thanks again!

WTB: Anything Invader, Banksy or Mr. Brainwash, by Deleted on Nov 18, 2010 9:04:17 GMT 1, Great advice Raiden
Mr Brainwash - Only go for early pieces, low edition, like the Mondriart which are very expensive nowadays, see last Dreweatts acution
Invader - Currently overpriced; wait a bit or try to look for a bargain somewhere.
As said above, 1000 USD is a lot of money, especially for a print... You can get many nice original for that price. Consider also that if you buy a print, you need to add framing cost on top (which is often killing me).
Lastly, either go for cheap and relatively unknown/young artist (ex. ROA's originals are only 300 GPB) or go for big names with background (Koons, Hirst, Murakami) although they are flooding the market as well (but less flippers, not like Obey) - big names are expensive but it can't go lower than cost.
Lastly, don't forget the Asian market (lot of new artist from China)... and why not the African market (last week, auction set a new record with a Tinga Tinga painting)
Raiden - Are you sure this is from Wiz ??

WTB: Anything Invader, Banksy or Mr. Brainwash, by raiden on Nov 18, 2010 9:41:49 GMT 1, Oh, I may have been mistaken about who was selling it. It was someone I recognized the moniker of.
The central idea I base my art buying now days is identifying works that could make it in a major retrospective on the Urban Art movement 50 years from now and being conscious of how particular artists will fit into the narrative of how the movement emerged, developed, and ended.
Then I add these 8 things:
1) Do I like it... (AKA Demand is a sense. Since art is aesthetics, demand is basically determined by "do I like it" ergo others must like it, therefore they'll be a market. Then the tricky part is determining "how much do I like it" and consequently "will other people like it more to the tune of...." Lots of people groan when people are like "buy what you like" but its tantamount to saying "buy art there is a demand for")
2) Supply. (Art eventually comes down to supply and demand. This is where edition number comes in. If an edition is bigger than the market, prices will go down. If an artist releases too much work, prices will go down. If an artist is young, that means supply will keep increasing for years, so they better continually increase their visibility in the market or manage their releases such that they don't flood the market. All things to consider on the supply side.
3) Promotional apparatus / Gallery Representation
4) Technique (You want to look for pieces that involve artistic progression or a piece that is of rare quality... masterworks)
5) Size of the piece.
6) Geo-economic factors (The overall condition of the economy and differences in the values of currencies. Currency fluctuations have a major effect on the art market.)
7) Differences in how the piece plays to various demographics. (Certain pieces play better to women, to old people, to auction goers. Its why some of the really, really graphic Mapplethorpes and Warhol nudes go for less, because rich people have grand children that come over.)
8) Due diligence. (Provenance! Super important. Beyond that, you have to be sure that a piece is on a medium that will last the test of time. While robust, cardboard is harder to preserve than canvas. Furthermore, you have to be careful on ebay in finding out how things are framed. If you buy a framed piece for purposes of long term value, make sure an archival frame, etc.)
---
Even with that, I'm wrong about whether work with appreciate about as much as I'm right - basically 50/50. But the key is just not buying pieces that decline in price much and then buying a few pieces that go up radically in price - doubling or tripling. (Like in 2008, I picked Banksy, Insect, Charming Baker, Vhils, and Eelus - which I kept secret at the time as I wanted to buy additional originals at $800 but didn't have the cash)

That's why few months ago, did a search on Wikipedia for "famous photographers born in the 20s" (and still alive) to lurk at galleries online to see printed edition photo available.
All work by Marc Riboud on Opus Art are sold now, they were not few months ago !! William Klein are still available and some shots are really nice.
