Banksy print for sale??, by Mike Marcus on Dec 7, 2010 23:31:41 GMT 1, Hello Hello
When did the Banksy forum become the "Urban Art Association"? Makes it sound somehow official, like you represent the interests of urban artists :-P
Does anyone have a Banksy print for sale? Doesn't matter which one as long as it is signed, limited edition and you don't mind it getting "re-appropriated" for artistic purposes.

Banksy print for sale??, by Mike Marcus on Dec 8, 2010 13:53:09 GMT 1, I have been making minimalist sculpture from paper mâché recently. The paper usually comes from meaningful sources: newspaper headlines, holy books, etc. I have a commission for a small work and I thought it would be fun to create a piece from another artists work. I'm interested in using a Banksy print for a couple of reasons, not least because he uses really nice paper.
I know people can be a bit funny about this type of thing so I thought it best to be upfront to the seller.

Banksy print for sale??, by Michael Jacob on Dec 8, 2010 15:57:30 GMT 1, Mike Like youre idea, but a signed print might not be cost effective. You might try to look for a back door print,or one thats damaged. It would be tons cheaper. I was going to do a re appropriated piece a few years back, but never got it off the ground. Good luck!

Funny about this type of thing...?!
You might want to get hold of one that has been damaged already. It will be way cheaper and forum members won't be too funny about you mashing it up

Banksy print for sale??, by Harveyn on Dec 8, 2010 18:55:26 GMT 1, Mike I suggest you go for a Laugh Now or Kate. You will then need to send it to me so I can firstly confirm it to be authentic and then as a gesture cut it up into tiny pieces for you to aid the paper mâché process.
Now where did I put that MBW print....

Banksy print for sale??, by raiden on Dec 9, 2010 8:42:25 GMT 1, Its definitely desecration if its done to original works.
As for signed and numbered editions - there are more ways than one to look at it - as you aren't eliminating the only copy.
Some will hold it as akin to burning / destroying books, even though you may not be burning the only copy.
At the end of the day, however, you are reducing the total number of particular cherished works that is currently being enjoyed, to make a new piece of yet to be determined artistic value.
And even if you succeed in adding net value to art by destroying a print, you still did so through subtraction.
Personally, if you're hellbent on using a signed and numbered piece priced $1500+ to make a statement, then I'd use an Obama Hope piece. Certainly would have more meaning in general and could get the maximum amount of "attention" given the current backlash of the left in America against Obama.
But if it has to be a Banksy that is sacrificed, I don't see why it has to be a signed one.
And secondly, you've done some pretty great works at this point - contact Pest Control and propose whatever you're planning on doing and see if you can't arrange a printers proof of the most recent print or for them to give you a heads up on where to find a damaged print, etc.

Banksy print for sale??, by Mike Marcus on Dec 9, 2010 13:42:00 GMT 1, "Desecration" is a word usually reserved for religious objects. You might like Banksy but to imply that his work is holy seems to be going a little far.
As for the rest of your argument, I think we depart from a very similar point of view. Is it akin to book burning? It's a question I would truly wish the work to raise.
How do we judge cultural value? Does uniqueness imply a higher status? Many would argue that this question was answered when Andreas Gursky sold his Prada print for over a million Euro. Others would still point to Walter Benjamin's famous essay "Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction".
What's interesting is that Banksy is by far the most popular artist in Britain for at least a decade. However within the "fine art establishment" he is at best ignored and usually slated. This sets up an interesting condition. Why is there such a dichotomy between the interests of popular and "high" culture? What does this mean for the future of contemporary art?
I'm taking a fairly affordable object dearly loved by the majority of cultural consumers but looked down on by "the art world" - one which is dropping in value. Then through the process of deconstruction, turning it into an object of lesser form but higher price. One which engages the very people who reject the original print and something that will presumably increase in value.
That raises some interesting questions about the validity of the 'institution' wouldn't you say?

Then when they see it and it dont match there ideas this will turn into a hate thread, for touching there beloved banksy. I remember loads of people on the dface forum giving money to a guy for new project. They cried like girls when he used there money to crash the dface site for selling out.
each to there own good luck, but i dont wanna see it.
