Banksy your weapon wanted!!, by manty on Dec 11, 2010 15:37:37 GMT 1, Ok, here we go
Acemart, they didn't sell for that, unless in this odd collectors market there is someone who has that kind of money for a print and is also extremely stupid, maybe he inherited the money? and his parents sired a stupid Son? No one that worked for their money would be stupid enough to spunk that amount on a print. I think we all know the value this will settle down to in a few years looking at the other prints, and it is not £10k or even £8k
I woke up this morning and wondered how much I would pay and that amount is around £1300 max
If i don't get one then fine, but when I add £200 for framing, its £1500 and thats plenty enough for me to spend on something this side of Christmas.

Banksy your weapon wanted!!, by kazzazz on Dec 11, 2010 17:17:16 GMT 1, Yes it is obvious that they may have 'sold' the prints for that amount but will they complete....im sure its to annoy the seller.....8 prints at £10K is ALOT in seller fees.......and if the buyer is clever the seller has no choice but to pay. One way to get your own back on flippers. No way are these prints work 10K......for that money I would rather put it into one of the early signed prints!! Crazy!!!

Those that have will say its the most valuable thing since the Arc. Those that do not have (ie me) will think it is worth around £1.3-1.5k on release.
This is known as a 'spread' of prices.

Banksy your weapon wanted!!, by Zippy on Dec 11, 2010 18:02:34 GMT 1, Agreed. but there are some with ulterior motives to talk up the prices to then flog their own.
We see this everytime their is a banksy release - year on year.
To any new members, this forum will quieten down in the New Year once the bullshit has stopped. Then normal service will be restored.
There are 100 pages of bullsh1t re the release. Lots of 'experts' talking about dates and times. then the usual posts re who got / who did not and flippers and their prices.
Obviously we would all love to get one but with the sheer number of entries they will get v the number of prints available, there will be huge disappointment.

A fairly astute observation from RC. What's intriguing me is that there's not been any tangible discussion around the piece. The nod to Haring is acknowledged and improves what, without this, would be a weaker image.
My view...lacks the wit and humour (and social comment occasionally) of previous releases. I've not been attracted since Trolllies and Morons and given the choice between a B&W signed version of either of those two and this is a no brainer.
Prices will settle of course, there's 40% odd of the confirmed release yet to go and only the bravest of mercenary fuckers are selling (or not) now. In a month or so we'll get the same old excuses...
1. Wife doesn't like it 2. I'd like to trade for another signed Banksy (which I'll then sell, as don't want to known as a flipper) 3. Big, expensive Christmas to pay for 4. Snow boarding holiday 5. Nan died, got to pay to bury the old dear and give her a decent send off

Banksy your weapon wanted!!, by lee3 on Dec 11, 2010 23:43:13 GMT 1, >>>What's intriguing me is that there's not been any tangible discussion around the piece. The nod to Haring is acknowledged and improves what, without this, would be a weaker image.<<<
*I* believe it to be a very intellectual print myself but one has to have insight into Haring's body of work and just what he was communicating about over and over and over and over. And the other artists he was communicating with. I believe Banksy understands that language and therefore this print makes sense to me. It may appear simple but I believe it is a language first and the image second. Kenny Scharf speaks the same narrative in much of his work and I find it more than coincidental that the abundance of color ways for this print just happen to mimic much of the color scheme Scharf used to repaint the famous Haring mural in NY the past 2 weeks. I could be wrong but I believe there is a deeper meaning to this print than the vast majority of viewers understand. Therefore the conclusion that it is a weaker image. I used to think the same of Haring until I dove into his body of work and now believe I know what much of it revolves around and the influence he had on others artists. I now look at his work much differently.
Near the end of his life in December '89 as Haring was winding down his oeuvre, he became VERY descriptive with instructions. On December 9th 1989 (a month or two before his death) he made a series of 16 or 17 drawings that to any onlooker would appear as chaotic nonsense. They are anything but and are instead some of the most descriptive works he ever painted in regards to a situation. In one particular drawing from that set done on the 9th shown here: www.haring.com/cgi-bin/art_lrg.cgi?date=1989&genre=Drawing&id=00154
you'll notice a similar harness on a bird and it is poignant to the story. I'm not going to get into what these drawings are detailing but I have wondered if Banksy is referring to that wider narrative with his Haring dog composition. It's something I would love to ask this artist but that's obviously not happening. I may be way off base or onto something (and i believe the handful of Banksy works displayed at the recent show reflect it too.) Regardless, this print *to me* is one of the most powerful compositions he has produced.

Banksy your weapon wanted!!, by sashaz on Dec 12, 2010 2:29:35 GMT 1, at first i thought this was just an obvious print. However I have now ended up thinking its really good. The haring reference is obvious but there are a few meanings there. The weapon of choice for some street guys is a big scary dog that they can use to protect them. Some artists use references to past artists to strengthen and also validate their own messages. The "ease" of using this method in art is almost a mirror for the ease that some use the dog as a weapon without having any fighting prowess. The whole idea is a catch 22 for both the message and the method of the message delivery. Thus excellent in my eyes (also in some of the colourways it looks extra awesome)!

On the alternative maybe the image is what it says on the tin - commentary on the 'evolution' of society with Keith Haring's body of work being referred to just because it's relevant and available - low hanging fruit if you like.....
As you say, unlikely to get the definitive.
Could never get my head around Donuts either......

The one for sale now are from People who bought it to make money, like estudents etc. in few week those prints will go to collectors and gallery and they will tag the price of those. From my point of view this will be one of the top prints by B in the future, nice colours, nice message delivery, small ed and weaker print. I will love get one of the greey one to to hang it next to my NBG.
