Tavar Zawacki ๐บ๐ธ Above Street Art โข Print Release, by Daniel Silk on Mar 1, 2010 13:02:02 GMT 1, In the US, Brainwash will do better in the long run. In the UK market, I recon challengers to be D*Face or Nick Walker. Adam Neate will alo someday be worth more than Banksy...
I would say Faile and D*Face are the clear ones that could be "Rivals to Banksy's throne", but saying that, most of the artists we are talking about produce art in very different styles so in a ways none of them are actually "Rivals" at all.

I think D*Face has had his chance and is not likely to compete now.

Tavar Zawacki ๐บ๐ธ Above Street Art โข Print Release, by bullet on Mar 1, 2010 13:49:54 GMT 1, we dont, its just that when someone comes along, people expect to find someone that produces the quality of banksy but for half the price.
what banksy does is nothing unique, many of the ideas are just things which have been thought of many times before but its the way he executes it then how the media picks it up which is the difference.

Tavar Zawacki ๐บ๐ธ Above Street Art โข Print Release, by Wearology on Mar 1, 2010 13:50:18 GMT 1, I have not seen the movie - but I live in America and I have been to the MBW show at the Meat Packing District. MBW is very talented but in a Weird Al Yankovick kind of way. MBW takes already established artistic themes and puts a spin on them. I thought that Nick Walker or DFACE was going to rival Banksy but that bus seems to have left the station.

Tavar Zawacki ๐บ๐ธ Above Street Art โข Print Release, by boaty on Mar 1, 2010 14:45:26 GMT 1, There will never be another Banksy in this space, who will get away with the anonymity and high profile. One of a kind.
The others will compete among themselves.
Given MBWs success (expect more upside for him in the future), the market is ripe for more mass production glitzy types to jump in. The MBW type of markets (financially driven) breeds much more competion and quickly. Hustlers now see there's a hustle in it. The C.R.E.A.M effect!

Tavar Zawacki ๐บ๐ธ Above Street Art โข Print Release, by boaty on Mar 1, 2010 14:57:11 GMT 1, I don't think Americans claim Mr Brainwash (he's french) nor compare him to Banksy. At the ICONS show, I recall talking with some folks about their experience standing in line and how it must of compared with standing in line all day and night for Banksy's NBG piece. The resounding view was "now, Banksy: that's serious stuff there...I wish I could get his stuff". Unfortunately, if you do know about him in the states - the access to purchase Banksy's work is not well known - many folks do not even know about POW - they still rely on the banksy website.
As for Micallef and Choe - not sure either of them consider themselves graffiti/street artists - I recall reading an article where Micallef states this about himself. So agree, they offer something different.
DFace 'Pop Tart', Nick Walker 'TMA' other than that they've not done anything noteable... although they do use the same idea over and over. They appeal to some people in this scene but they just don't offer anything different for other people to distinguish their work from all the other street artists. Banksy is it, the americans might push for their own version in MBW but is just won't happen, it's too late. Artists like Choe and Micallef do however offer something different, they have real talent and ability to take things to a whole different level. They can match Bansky's success but doing what they do... Choe in particular has a raw talent and big personality that distinguishes him from anything else out there. I wish they would sort out the 'dirty hands' film release.

Tavar Zawacki ๐บ๐ธ Above Street Art โข Print Release, by Daniel Silk on Mar 1, 2010 15:40:13 GMT 1, I think at the end of the day to try and answer questions like this you need to stand back and take a fresh look at the facts. Look at the amount of work by those Artists that has been sold over the years, the number of collectors, the show popularity, the media coverage.
On that basis I think Faile and D*Face, are very BIG, followed by about 20+ others would could also step up to join them over time
Im afraid some artists will never really make it in the scale of Banksy, as their style of art is only ever going to be popular with a small part of the population

Tavar Zawacki ๐บ๐ธ Above Street Art โข Print Release, by bullet on Mar 1, 2010 15:49:15 GMT 1, this threads going to end up with every artist under the sun mentioned again.
i think this, i think that. To be honest, it does not matter what you think, it just goes on fact as silky says.
there is a list of major street influences in the 'modern' sense, and banksy, obey, invader, dface and faile are in that top list no matter what anyone says.

Tavar Zawacki ๐บ๐ธ Above Street Art โข Print Release, by raiden on Mar 1, 2010 20:47:50 GMT 1, I'll keep this post mostly MBW free....
The question is... What throne are we talking about?
The throne of godfather of street art? Banksy doesn't have that throne necessarily - he may even concede it to Blek or others - but he does have the throne of artist who popularized street art and brought it to the level of both mainstream and gallery owner acceptability.
That's not a throne you can usurp. Its historicity that Banksy has on his side. Everyone who follows him, in some sense, will always be emulators - particularly those (MBW, Eelus, etc) who launched their careers partly because of their admiration of Banksy.
Historically, Banksy may well be spoken in the same sentences as Picasso, Warhol, Duchamp, etc. in the sense that he was an artist whose work launched a movement.
His name is going to be synonymous with the person who turned street art into an urban art movement, just as Warhol took commercial graphic art influences and turned it into the pop art movement, and Picasso took abstraction of the time and turned it into a cubist movement.
Few of the other artists being discussed are essential to the art history narrative of urban art - they are sideshows at best, but if you had to name the most important artist in "The Urban Art Movement" - Banksy is front and center.
Now, if the "throne" being questioned is one of who produces the most technically amazing street pieces, or who throws up the most work, or who does the most intricate stencil work, or who is advancing the medium in such a way that he can be considered the new vanguard for the development of "what's next" ... That's a throne I'd say there are plenty of artists who can stake a claim to.
