Takashi Murakami Exhibit Brooklyn, by Carnage NYC on May 26, 2008 21:27:08 GMT 1, it's a fantastic exhibition. puts a lot of other "artists" that get hyped a lot on this board to shame. i recommend checking it out if you are anywhere near NYC. and stop by david zwirner for the neo rauch show while you're at it.

Sabeth, did Rauch deliver? I missed the MET exhibition due to unfortunate timing, rain, and my wife's pregnancy. Definitely heading to this one as I want to see his work in the flesh.

Takashi Murakami Exhibit Brooklyn, by Octopus UK on May 27, 2008 9:05:02 GMT 1, I visited a Murakami exhibition in LA last Autumn, MOCA near Little Tokyo. It was very visual and very stunning. I was not sure what to make of the sculptures with the body fluids eminating from them though.

Takashi Murakami Exhibit Brooklyn, by ragingbull on May 27, 2008 10:37:33 GMT 1, Thanks for these links. I've wanted to buy something of his since I first saw his stuff in the Bonhams auction. I wish I could afford one right now.

Takashi Murakami Exhibit Brooklyn, by Gentle Mental on May 27, 2008 10:51:16 GMT 1, He freely admits his work is pretentious just so you'd love it, and pay an obscene amount of money for it.
He is mocking the art you buy. It's Banksy's "Morons" without the guilt.
It's popular Culture at its "Poppiest", you get a visual, sugar-high from staring at the stuff.
I suspect it's even more intense for those who didn't grow up in a "anime" or "manga" culture.
For those who did, the visuals may be stunning, but we kinda get the "context" and thus, the mockery is more apparent (so we get a "double" whammy effect)
Trippy.

Takashi Murakami Exhibit Brooklyn, by wimpy on May 27, 2008 13:11:05 GMT 1, He was recently in the TIME most influential people of the year edition. Marc Jacobs wrote the blurb. Can't find a linky atm.
And, yeah, what a great show.

Takashi Murakami Exhibit Brooklyn, by daveart on May 27, 2008 21:22:10 GMT 1, Murakami is interesting - he freely admits other people help him create and paint most of the pieces at this point - he is the "visionary" behind it all though.. same as Hirst spot prints I believe?
not sure the exact math.. but for round numbers:
10 new prints - Dobs and others 300 per edition $850 US per print - or so i heard....
$2,550,000 sold out in a few days. not bad at all. then you throw in the new canvases/ LV bags, etc.... the man is pulling in some serious cash.
I have five different Murakami prints in an office setting and they get a lot of attention.. they were more fun to buy when the DOB's were $500 though.. not sure i would buy them again at current prices ?? who knows.
