MBW, LTWT print: Am I mad or astute?, by stringer64 on Jan 2, 2011 22:51:33 GMT 1, Just picked up a Live Today Worry Tomorrow print by MBW for ยฃ80. Am I mad, too late and missed the bus or is this an astute buy. I must admit that I like the print a lot as I have been an admirer of Brian Jones for many a year, however, it will hopefully be an investment too. Forum members opinions gladly received.

I wouldn't buy it or think investment on this... Of course each his own...

i'm guessing in a few decades, some of MBW's work will have real value...MBW is part of art and Banksy history now, codified in the ETTGS movie and his works have sold for insane amts of money to some people who have the means of moving the MBW art market, when the time is right, so they don't take a loss...some of the current negative sentiments will be washed away and forgotten as time goes by - as art will outlive us all...
if you bought the print because you liked it...that's always the best way to invest in art...you win either way....
note: I only have 2 MBW prints, which were given away at his NY show - so not hyping...all me humble opinion is all...(although, if I could get my hands on his Billie Holiday and Ali works - would grab them in a NY minute!)

You're forgetting one thing, unlike most other recognised street artists, MBW isn't an artist, doesn't have an artists sensibilities. MBW's work shows no artistic merit whatsoever..he's an unstable, egocentric, LA celebrity flash in the pan.. with a very very short life span. I doubt anyone at all will be discussing him in 5 years time other than as a curiosity in Banksy's ETTGS. He's simply not an artist. And that's a pretty important requirement in the long term.

MBW is in the business of art...a whole other population and audience comes into play here...and with society getting lazier and lazier...talent and skills are not focused on as they once were, unfortunately...
note again, not an MBW hyper in anyway....just discussing art market...

MBW, LTWT print: Am I mad or astute?, by Cedric Mnich on Jan 3, 2011 10:50:52 GMT 1, "MBW is in the business of art"
Thanks boaty, that sums up it all. I was always looking for a short sentence to define MBW. Here it is. I don't think stringer's buy is a bad investment. Between buying a 80 GBP print by MBW and buying a 4000 GBP print by Banksy, I would not bet on who will be losing money in the long term... Most important, he LIKES his print. It's capital to buy a picture we like before buying a name. No ?

MBW, LTWT print: Am I mad or astute?, by stringer64 on Jan 3, 2011 14:34:51 GMT 1, Thanks for the replies everyone. It is really interesting to see what everyone has to say about this. Having watched ETTGS, MBW does appear to be very much a self-publicist who has employed graphic artists to make his ideas come to life and then mass produces these images in the name of Art. However, when established artists like Rolf Harris and Paul Horton bang out limited edition giclees of 595, each selling for ยฃ300 +, is this much different? Hirst employed artists to work for him and Andy Warhol employed people at the Factory to screenprint his Marilyn's etc and didn't even sign them at times leaving those who had done the work to sign it for him.
There is clearly a certain amount of emulation with regard to MBW's work, as Rene Gagnon can attest, and unlike artists such as Micallef, Francis and Yeo, he appears to create images from those he can find on the internet. However, some of these images he creates are interesting. I know he is viewed with disdain by many people in the UK, and at the moment struggles to sell his work this side of the Atlantic, but this has happened to other artists who have seen a resurgence later. So, although I do not think his work is "great art", I do think that it could be an investment and while i wait for the right time to sell I will enjoy seeing Brian Jones with his spry can on my wall.
Keep the comments coming, as all opinions are interesting.

I really don't think the conspiracy that these images are all created by Banksy washes at all. I think that TG or MBW is just someone who has seen how it is done and has decided to copy it. But I do think there is more to come out of this story than we have had at the moment.
