lino, block and woodcut artists, by T*3 on Jul 24, 2010 13:00:51 GMT 1, over the past few months i have become completely obsessed with lino and block prints. Does anyone know of any artists that are printing using these techniques? I have been looking at works from gaia, elbowtoe, luke dixon and swoon are there any other with a similar style?
i have also decided to give it ago and while i am waiting for my supplies to arrive i designed a one colour lino print which will be hand coloured with watercolours. my lino print design. will be 30x30cm
any tips and supplies stores are welcome.
thanks

lino, block and woodcut artists, by walshy on Jul 24, 2010 13:34:57 GMT 1, Sweet toof and the rest of the BC crew work with those techniques. Lino printing has to be one of my favorite techniques I was taught at college. If you like a clinical finish to your work these may not be the best methods, but they are fun to use

lino, block and woodcut artists, by T*3 on Jul 24, 2010 14:52:17 GMT 1, thanks walshy, i see what you mean about having clean lines but i think working with lino will have a more handmade feel to it. After stencilling for a few years now i would like to try a new medium and think that lino is a better option than screen printing, as it will take alittle more planning and effort to create the final artwork. I just have to wait for my supplies to arrive so i can get started on the carving. Do you have any photos of your prints you did in college walshy? i cant remember seeing any artwork you have made and would like to see your process.

lino, block and woodcut artists, by walshy on Jul 24, 2010 15:10:36 GMT 1, yer the handmade aesthetic is great and makes a nice difference to most of the art out there that looks like it has been through a computer process at some point.
Il try and have a look for some of my old prints, sadly I didnt make any more prints at uni but am looking to start again soon
... where are you ordering you equipment from ?

lino, block and woodcut artists, by T*3 on Jul 24, 2010 15:22:23 GMT 1, yeah you should should start printing again and maybe we could do a trade i ordered some on ebay and some at my local artstore as i couldnt find my debit card. I found that this place has decent prices on ink www.ghpkendal.co.uk/product.asp?productID=1992 and this is cheap for some other things www.pullingers.com/C~100150~Block+Printing+%28Lino+Printing%29 let me know if you buy from these places as i will need to get some more stuff after all the experimenting i plan on doing.

lino, block and woodcut artists, by Strange Al on Jul 25, 2010 9:10:07 GMT 1, T3, if you haven't done so already, you should check out the work of the German expressionist movement (die Bruecke) - try Kathe Kollwitz, Max Beckmann and Erich Heckel to start with. It's easy to see the lineage from these guys to swoon and the other folks we see working with these printmaking techniques today. This book features some nice examples of German expressionist work and is cheap: www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0486280691/ref=s9_simh_gw_p14_i1?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-1&pf_rd_r=18VX6F47NZ967EEGE0T3&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=467198433&pf_rd_i=468294
Of artists working in and around the urban scene today - you've mentioned swoon, so guess you will have seen the work of the other artists on her justseeds website? Billy Childish also does some interesting prints.

I did this as a woodcut in Sao Paulo.. just used a sheet of MDF and then carved into it with one of these tools..
It took a while but it was nice to do something that was so old school...

You need the normal lino. You heat it on a hot plate or on a hob on a electric oven. That softens it enough to cut like butter.
