Banksy • Choose Your Weapon Print, by niaudiasbrother on Dec 4, 2010 14:19:42 GMT 1, Agreed. But some of us need a 3 hour drive to get to london so midday before the release would be great.... The drive from the southern midlands down to bristol (to pick up a fellow fan) then across the M4 is not a great drive. Sometimes POW must understand that there are fans all over the country and not just London because if there was not would Banksy be the same person now without the Bristol scene backing him? I think you and your friend will be fine if you don't make to M&S the instant the release is announced. Last year I remember that the last person in the que who managed to get a print arrived at around 4am and the shop opened at 9ish so that was around a six hour wait. Plus its colder this year, much colder so only the real crazies will put themselves through this ordeal. Does anyone think there will be more grief from passers by in this location as opposed to commercial st... que will be near that seedy little porn street... I suppose we'll spot a few embarrassed dads emerging with suspicious paper bags tucked under arm.
I've really enjoyed reading the speculation of this release and the various opinions.
Someone mentioned the role of Bristol in Banksy's career as if he owes his hometown something. Banksy could have easily exhibited in any city in the country last year, but he chose to put a show on in Bristol. That show brought tens of thousands of people to the city, boosted the economy and was a respectful and classy thing to do. For anyone to use the 'Banksy owes Bristol' argument is poor. It's like saying Bowie owes Brixton or Hirst owes Goldsmiths.
The only responsibility any artist has is to try to produce quality work.
London is fortunate to have Marks and Stencils, but I don't think there is a better city in the UK an event like this could take place. Banksy might be the spark that draws attention to the show, but this is a celebration of the work of a range of artists and I think it is really poor if any of us forget or choose to ignore this.
I don't know how many of you have spent more than an hour outside since the cold snap started. It's much, much colder than it was for the release last year which by comparison was tropical compared to what we have at the moment. Spending the best part of 12 hours outside in the cold is not something I think any of us wants to happen and that includes PoW.
One thing this thread has shown is that there is not one perfect way of handling a print release. Whatever PoW does someone is going to be put out.
I don't think they can seriously legislate for people travelling any great distances because Londoners are always going to have an advantage getting to Berwick Street quicker than someone coming from outside of the capital. That is why the online release was such a great idea last year and I hope that PoW continues that trend this year.
I would love it if PoW announced the release late for an early morning release. E.g announce at 2am that the print will go on sale that morning at 6am. The randomness will level the playing field a bit more than 24 hour notice and the legions of professional campers/flipper teams etc it would attract. Also if someone e.g in Manchester is up at 2am when the email arrives they have a realistic chance of getting to Marks and Stencils before many Londoners have even woken up. The early opening time will stifle really long queues and no one has to freeze their arses off for any longer than necessary in Soho.
Of course this would penalise potential buyers who don't own cars or have access to transport that can get them into central London quickly. That's why I think idea of a 'dawn raid' could be a great leveller.

Banksy • Choose Your Weapon Print, by niaudiasbrother on Dec 4, 2010 14:45:47 GMT 1, The Bristol show was for everyone. When careers grow it becomes increasingly difficult to please the people who were there at the start.
Even though there was a queue it wasn't there for PoW to massage their or Banksy's ego. They did it to give those who haven't had any luck on the internet/lotteries etc a better chance of purchasing a print. They didn't ASK a single person to start queuing up 48 hours earlier.

Banksy • Choose Your Weapon Print, by robinbanks on Dec 4, 2010 15:13:45 GMT 1, Having the Q on Berwick street in soho in the red light district is just F***ing stupid and is askin for trouble. The banksy release HAS to be on commercial road, which is dead at night, has a 24 hour subway, a hotel down the road (toilets) for the girlfriends , compared to busy dangerous west end. where drug dealing, prostitutes, violent drunks are active as well as barrow boys at 5am setting fruit stalls up!! The prints are made on commercial road, release them there!!!! POW please read this! Edit** ps THE AMOUNT OF TIMES I HAD TO TELL DRUNK PEOPLE PASSING WHAT I WAS QUEING FOR ON COMMERCIAL STREET WAS UNBEARABLE, THIS WILL BE 100 TIMES WORSE IN THE WEST END!
Unbearable? Really??
I thought it was quite amusing to be honest. We just took turns to make up random bollox - queuing for Elton John tickets was the best one I heard. ;D
Also - what's the big deal with Soho? It's slap bang in the centre of our capital city - with plenty of streetlights, police and CCTV. You make it sound like people will be waiting outside some sort of crack den in Brixton.

Banksy • Choose Your Weapon Print, by lvc on Dec 4, 2010 15:41:34 GMT 1, after about the 200th time explaining who banksy is..gets very tiring! Also its not like its "slap bang in the capital" I would happily Q in the middle of trafalgar square or parliament square with brian haw! even up to the 80's Soho was considered a dangerous uninviting place. All I'm saying is commercial road which is relatively quiet would be far better suited than the west end! (and I can walk there hahahaha) but seriously soho overnight?? Im not lying, next door to POW pop up is a bloody brothel! lots of red lights sleazy porn shops you name it. I'll do it as will everyone else but its just more effort! as i said ..the prints are made on commercial road sell them there!

I have my 17 people on standby. Its jolly unprofessional not being able to confirm queuing arrangements with them. It would be much easier if we all had a few days notice

Edit** ps THE AMOUNT OF TIMES I HAD TO TELL DRUNK PEOPLE PASSING WHAT I WAS QUEING FOR ON COMMERCIAL STREET WAS UNBEARABLE, THIS WILL BE 100 TIMES WORSE IN THE WEST END! are you for real ? my grandma is more street savvy than you. I take it you dont get out of your village much eh ? totes funny that you think soho is rougher than east. BEST POST OF THE YEAR.

Banksy • Choose Your Weapon Print, by afroken on Dec 4, 2010 17:38:20 GMT 1, I lived in Soho for a year, very close to where the show is. Believe me, you don't want to be queuing all night there. It will get nasty.
But then again, it's just not going to happen. If there is a queue it won't be in Westminster Council.

Banksy • Choose Your Weapon Print, by tomega on Dec 4, 2010 17:40:24 GMT 1, after about the 200th time explaining who banksy is..gets very tiring!
Back in the the 90s, when i lived in Bromley for a time and then Sutton, I used to visit the capital a lot, with friends from work, and we'd visit Soho in particular. At that time it was always a good place to go to end a good evening out. Many a time, after being in clubs that were open until the early hours would pop along to Soho for one or two last drinks. To be honest we occassionally popped into the sex movie shops but back then movies were VHS. As far as i can remember we were never troubled by anyone and always felt Soho to be a lively but safe place to be. Admittedly that was over a decade ago so may have changed since that time. However, when i visited the Curzon cinema to catch 'Exit through ....' when first shown in London i went to Soho to visit a book shop that i used to go to (bang in middle of Soho - on the corner - which has always sold art-related books from gay porn art, photography such as Richard Kern, Manga art, even bought my Cauty vol 1 + 2 Stamp books from there years ago, right through to mainstream art books) and to me Soho seemed as its always been, a lively yet safe place to be - for me anyway. Obviously there will be crime-related incidents and spates of violence but then thats any city of a weekend, in the early hours, with loads of pissed people roaming the streets. To be honest its not the pimps you should worry about as they won't be thinking about a Banksy release and certainly won't be reading this forum.
