So whats good in the big apple!, by solar77 on Feb 12, 2011 20:34:54 GMT 1, Head down to Chelsea for Joshua Liner Gallery's Ian Francis show (open for most of March). While you're there, walk the entire district and check out all the a-list galleries (Gagosian, Pace, Boone, etc). Jonathan LeVine Gallery is also in that area, but I'm not sure what they're showing at the moment.
Also some good galleries on the Lower East Side (Eleven Rivington, Lisa Cooley, etc). Definitely check out the George Condo show at the New Museum in the Bowery.

So whats good in the big apple!, by boaty on Mar 16, 2011 0:09:21 GMT 1, Just one week until I head off, just trying to book a nice restaurant for my girlfriends birthday. Somewhere a little swanky but not completely crazy! Any ideas? no shortage of nice restaurants in NYC, but personal favorites which may fit your req...
check out The Standard Grill in the Meatpacking District - good atmosphere - you can also have drinks at the top of the Standard Hotel (would be lucky if they have live jazz playing that evening...) - I go there often and have never been disappointed...
for a great breakfast, particularly if you're around on the weekend...highly recommend the Clinton Street Bakery...
I'm a foodie, so could go on forever...

So whats good in the big apple!, by boaty on Mar 16, 2011 0:28:26 GMT 1, one more...check out the Oyster Bar in Grand Central Terminal(don't need to get oysters, tho)...I used to swing by there alone for lunch often and "people watch" ;D
Bryant Park is a wonderful spot to visit as you do the Times Square, Rockefeller Center, 5th Ave etc. route (gotta cover these as a 1st timer in NYC...)

Thanks for listing everything a tourist would go to for an average meal at a jacked up price (Juniors is a must hit Katzs and Second ave deli are also great picks), everything else is what two years ago at least? Like what you can't get a smith and wolensky's steak at any of their 9 other locations throughout the US?

So whats good in the big apple!, by hal9001 on Mar 16, 2011 7:09:53 GMT 1, i dont know what a smith and wolensky steak is - should i feel stupid?
No, not at all. Large chains like this will cause all restaurants to become taco bell ala "Demolition Man" try to patronize independent joints with fresh local products and we will all be better off when it comes to the quality of our establishments. Lets not get into the whole tesco argument again though ;D .
Just note that there are a lot of new restaurants with young hot talent in the kitchen, and if you go a bit out of your way by reading food blogs just like you read this art board then you will be supporting innovators and not 75 year old men who stopped caring about quality 10 years ago.
REFUSE TO MILK THE CASH COWS! Find a new spot! Im not trying to say that going to the same place your parents went to is wrong, far from it, go there when they pick up the check! When our generation goes out I wish they would try the new and exciting and not the old and stuffy!

must remember, most of these established restaurants started out small too - they were just very successful (unlike most restaurant start ups)...can't just stop supporting them because they were successful and been around for more than a minute...me opinion is all...

nice williamsburg mention - people swear by this place!...I don't eat the types of meat they are famous for, but have gone with family and friends who were darn near licking their plates...
