Banksy Street Art in Los Angeles, by Ågent ßacardi on Feb 24, 2011 0:22:55 GMT 1, AHOY THERE, motor, Harveyn, and Jay! So glad to "see" all of you on here again!!
As I was saying in a PM to motor, seeing Banksy's recent work here in LA made me miss the good ol' days when I practically lived on this forum chatting with you guys! In fact, that was a major reason why I sort of vanished... I was on this forum all the time during work ('cos that's when all you UK'ers are awake), that I hardly got any work done!
Anyway, I'm just glad that there are some familiar faces on here, still... hope you all have been doing well!

Banksy Street Art in Los Angeles, by Rubys on Feb 24, 2011 10:04:12 GMT 1, I posted this on another forum but thought I'd share here as well. While I was taking pictures of the Banksy piece on Compton/Washington in LA, I found this. It's a chunk of Banksy's oil pastel that he used for the piece. I figured it made for a great souvenir.
quick get it dusted for prints

imo tagging them is even worse, its like they want credit for ruining a piece of street art

so what, you think banksy deserves to be there more than the tags do?

Well these people obviously had the opportunity to tag the wall 1000's of times before Banksy did, so why didnt they ?
Hitting a piece with your tag is just crying for attention in my eyes.. if someone really wants to make a point, they could buff the piece with there own work or just trash it.

Maybe, but great placement with the highway underneath, given that the original signs this piece is based on were placed on highways to warn drivers of people running across them.

Totally agree , shows no artistic merit at all, just pointless attention seaking

lets face it if no-one had ever tagged then rest assured there would be no banksy. why should others give the same respect you/we have for banksy? what banksy does on the streets, like this, is still against the law and in some peoples eyes is vandalism, in others its a poke in the eye to the artform that started it all.

Er... not sure I said tagging was bad, in fact I said nothing of the sort. I certainly never questioned it as a legitimate artform. My point is if you want to trash a banksy... do so. But buy tagging or adding to it, you are trying to achieve nothing other than self promotion.

Yes, Considering that's the backbone to all tagging/graffiti.

All art is a 'look at me' attention seeking statement, tagging is as valid as a stencilled rat. Self promotion is all over Banksy, more-so even as is obvious by delving into his back catalogue of behaviour. Tagging a piece by Banksy is just like tagging a wall that people walk by everyday in their thousands. It gets you seen.

ok, il try it another way... il try even simpler
scenario 1...
Artist adds the oscar to the banksy piece, documents it.. then adds it to his blog.
Scenario 2...
Artist adds something to a Banksy piece, then tags in huge bold letters.. just in case anyone misses it. Then gets people to post the breaking news on forum, plus adds a full story on blog to back it up plus gets 'friends' to post about the story
Can you see the difference in agenda ? IMO both are promotional, its just one seems a bit more contrived.
Maybe im lone in thinking if I wanted to be an artist id try do it through skill, not off the name of someone else

Banksy Street Art in Los Angeles, by bazzj04 on Feb 24, 2011 18:14:39 GMT 1, Why not tag a different wall and earn your own notoriety/ fame etc, off your own back rather than jumping on someone elses? Plus allot of these tags that get thrown up look shit in comparisent , if you going to tag atleast work on a style not some chucked up crap surely its embarrassing and makes you look a tit.
