Never trust your framer with money , by gibbin82 on Feb 27, 2011 20:31:14 GMT 1, I was hoping to be posting these pictures in the "Show us your latest art buy" thread unfortunately I have to post it here .
I have just been lucky enough to get one of Pennys Lexine Lost stencils on a bank note, this one is on the reverse of a one dollar bill and is an edition of two (mine was number one). When it arrived I carefully unwrapped it and had a very brief look and took it straight to the framers thinking that it would be safer framed than not, see below what he did for me!
Looks quite nice? But look a bit closer.
And with the next one he has even kindly placed something on it resembling a nasal hair complete with Bogey
Now to be honest I am completely devastated, I picked it up yesterday morning but couldn't bring myself to look at again until today. I love Pennys work especially the Lexine and Thumbelinas and was really happy and fortunate to get this directly from him. When I had the brief look if was so perfect and radiant I hardly dare breath on it, now it is ruined. It was one of two and now I cant get back in contact with Penny so I presume the other has gone, so it is irreplaceable. I have used this framer in the past and always asked the right questions and trusted him, I am now worried about the other things I have had done.
Completely gutted.

Never trust your framer with money , by Chris Keegan on Feb 27, 2011 20:47:53 GMT 1, Sorry too see that. If the artwork was'nt flat in the first place and used car paint or something it would be likely crack up. Painting on to currency is always gonna be a bit of a risky thing. Try speaking to the artist see if they can help. If you are selling a small piece that can crack or is very delicate maybe the artist should mount it before sale to re-enforce it.
Is it spray painted?

It is spray painted, seven layers of paint, and was perfectly flat on a brand new note, Penny had taken great care with the packing to ensure it remained so, unfortunately it is now no longer flat. I am not sure how it has been mounted but it is noticeably rippled and corrugated

Never trust your framer with money , by craigf on Feb 27, 2011 21:01:03 GMT 1, I'll have a look at mine tomorrow to check it's still as it should be and hasn't cracked. You'll then know if its the framer or the paint / medium

Never trust your framer with money , by bullet on Feb 27, 2011 21:05:30 GMT 1, It looks like the surface thats done that. 7 layers on something thats not used to being painted on is quite alot. Normally things would need priming otherwise where is the paint going to go.. Theres not much for it to soak into. It would be like at primary school when you used loads of poster paint ontop of each other then let it dry to over the weekend on a school radiator. It dries to fast and cracks.

Hi Jon, thanks, but it was not cracked a few days ago, before it was framed and considering the care Penny goes to making the stencils I would expect he would also take the same care with the painting. In this case it has not been handled with appropriate care, it looks to me as though it has been bent or curled while fixing down, where the note was perfectly flat it is now quite rippled, although it is very hard to capture how bent it actually is see the pictures below:

Yes there is a big curve at the bottom, but it is one of many just as bad and some worse (but most do not show up with my limited photography skills), from looking at it it appears to me as though he has curled the note and then stuck it to the foam board flattened it as he goes and then pressing it onto the foam from the note side. Although I don't know anything about framing I would have thought it would have been better to lay the note face down onto a clean hard flat surface and then pressed the foam (already attached to the backing board) onto the note to avoid bending or pressing it.

Never trust your framer with money , by swan on Feb 28, 2011 0:43:08 GMT 1, Hair (nasal) or otherwise is unforgivable on a big print, let alone one this size.
Otherwise, my understanding of US bank notes is that they are made from cotton. Is it possible that the adhesive applied to the back of the note made it expand, thus causing the cracks?
Hope you have luck sorting this out, I'd be pretty upset too.

Never trust your framer with money , by pezlow on Feb 28, 2011 11:02:44 GMT 1, Very sorry to see this gibbin. I know how stoked you were to get this in the first place. Have a word with the artist and see if he can do anything. Penny seems like a good guy and may be willing to help you out especially if he knows that the mishap occurred during framing.

Never trust your framer with money , by ®at on Feb 28, 2011 18:43:48 GMT 1, Ill give you $1 for it ;D
Seriously though, temperature changes, movement and other stuff can all crack spraypaint- particularly thick layers like this. If you aren't happy then tell him. He *should* have insurance (and to be fair, if you left artwork with him you should have checked whether or not he had insurance prior to doing any framing)
Personally I trust my framer 100% with anything...even ive had to take stuff back to him before after a few months when temperature changes have caused issues with a few pieces..

Never trust your framer with money , by gibbin82 on Feb 28, 2011 18:46:43 GMT 1, Thank you to all for the advice and concern regarding my Lexine Lost, despite having a miserable weekend thinking that I would never replace the damaged note, I am really please (ecstatic) to report that it looks as though it will all end happily. I spoke to Penny this morning and he has very kindly offered to produce a new Lexine Lost to replace the damaged one once it has been returned to him to be destroyed. I really can't thank him or praise him enough not only is he a unusually skilled artist he is also a real top bloke and a true gentleman. ;D ;D ;D
I also visited the framers and it looks as though the bending and rippling was due to them using double sided archive quality tape, that must have stretched slightly when pulled from the roll and then contracting once on the note, also as it came off a roll I expect it was trying to assume its original shape and the note was too thin to resist. Now the note has been removed from the frame, the tape removed and it has reverted again to being flat. To be fair to the framers a spray painted bank note was something they hadn't come across before and they treated it as they would with something with a more flexible paint and more resilient base.

Thanks for the interest, this got sorted some time back, Penny did another free of charge, he is a real nice bloke as well as a really talented artist. I didn't go back to the framer with this one.
