head phones, by murdock on Mar 2, 2011 9:31:43 GMT 1, You need to decide, where you want to use them most. Outside? On the bike? In the subway? Or in your living room (some people do that )?
I prefer earplugs for outside (not everyone has to look like a DJ), and prefer them to not cover out all the noise while I walk in front of a bus.
As for closed/big ones, you should be fine with any Technics, Sony or Panasonic for about 100 GBP. I recently bought me some Panasonic DJ120 for the office for about 20โฌ and they are absolutely fine. I also have a Technics that cost me about 150โฌ for DJing, but it is not really comfortable to wear for several hours.
Hope that helps.

head phones, by Strange Al on Mar 2, 2011 9:56:26 GMT 1, As Murdock has said, it would help to have some more info about what you intend them use them for.
In addition to the questions he has asked, it would be helpful to know what sources you're using (e.g., iPod, stereo, etc)? What sort of sound you prefer (e.g., neutral, warm, bass heavy, etc)? Whether you want other functionality (e.g. iPod remote, microphone, etc)? What your budget is?
You can get a perfectly decent pair of headphones for ยฃ30, though if you want to go truly audiophile the sky is the limit (you can spend thousands). Most folks will be more than content with a pair in the ยฃ30-ยฃ250 price bracket. Obviously, there's a significant difference between something at the bottom end of that range and at the top.

Dre's have noise cancelling, good bass, decent detail. Great for planes, trains and automobiles. Pioneers have good sound isolation, duarable, good seperation when fannying about on decks.

I use Shure EC3 in ear's for the iPod. They cut out all background noise and also are quiet for everyone around you too. Not cheap but excellent.
For home use, i use either Beyerdynamic DT770 PRO or AKG K271. If you check iMuso, they have the AKG on a special price at the moment:

head phones, by craigf on Mar 2, 2011 13:46:49 GMT 1, I have shure's as well, actually have two pairs as I mislaid one bought a replacement only to find the originals a few weeks later at the bottom of a suitcase. You get a number of different size ear pieces so you can play around to see which fit the best. The first time I used them I heard new sounds in pieces of music I'd listened to hundreds of times before, they are very good ;D
When flying I have a pair of over ear digital sony headphones, which are very comfortable and have a good sound, but are seriously expensive (I used to work there and got given them)

I could not disagree more. Bose are 1 star quality at 4 star prices. Worse value possible. It has been a while since I have been up on headphones so I can't give an informed opinion on the best.
I can tell you it really depends on the source and the listening conditions. But in no case are Bose the way to go. low quality, poor sound, not super comfortable and expensive for what you get.
I recently sold my Sennheisser HD650 those were great but are open so only good in quiet settings and require a decent amp.
When looking for headphones think about how you will be using them and your budget. And try them out. Great sounding headphones suck if they are uncomfortable.
I stopped using expensive in ear earphones because I run with them and they get damaged easily so now I buy $2.95 Creative ones from ebay. They don't last long but at that price I'm ok with it. Sound also isn't great but when running it doesn't matter to me.
So the short answer is There is no one best it depends, but never buy Bose.

I am on your side on this thread :-)
Bose is awful, well not awful, but certainly not great, except for their marketing which is pretty awesome, I don't think they have heard of the concept of midrange. Though I am talking about their little square speakers which does not have a lot of relevance to headphones, unless you can adapt them somehow and don't mind strapping an amp to you.
am i waffling ?
Sennheisser gets my vote, will be brill when they sort out these things to work well with bluetooth, or is that done yet?>Luddite

Best in the world if you only use them at home.
Wouldn't rule out Bose noise reduction ones if you're on the Tube everyday or commute by plane a lot. All depends on where you need to use them.

I know, it's world's dumbest named product, but the Tivoli YiYiY blows anything away in a comparable setup (!).
www.tivoliaudio.com/products/ipod-players/iyiyi-stereo-system-black-silver.html
I tested it against the Sound Dock, the Zeppelin and Geneva, and this thing rocks!

Bought mine 19 years ago and still love them, only had to replace the pads in that time (DJing in sweaty clubs isn't good for the foam!). Not too big, but with a nice spacial sound and very good bass response. Really is horses for courses though as others have said.

1 monster dre studio (haven't heard any headphones with that kind of rendition) usually use it at home but only for music they're not that nice for movies, 1 monster tour earplugs for outside and use Panasonic DJ120 (same as murdock) for the rest (IMO Best value for money in that price range way better than sony's).
I agree that Bose headphones sucks but as for home speakers they are quality speakers!
