Banksy โข Barcode Print, by hungrig on May 19, 2007 17:01:09 GMT 1, Ebay item 290118538405 Seller states : This poster is printed in 2003 and is very rare now. This print is 100% authentic. I bought this barcode print from POW in the spring of 2004. Banksy logo and POW blindstamp was pushed in after autumn 2004. My name date has been left for POW. I do the full amount repayment guarantee. Screenprinted posters are size"490mm x 693mm " number: 217/600 I have a Barcode and thought they were released in 2004? Plus wouldn't they number and stamp them all at once? The numbering on this ebay item is totally different handwriting to mine. I'm sure he's correct in what he's saying but just wondering what the score is with not numbering them all at once.
1. The concern about the handwriting of the edition numbering has come up on this Forum more than once. No doubt it will come up again by new members.
For the avoidance of doubt, POW prints were numbered as and when they were sold, not all at once. The handwriting of the edition number will therefore differ according to who did the numbering. The same person's handwriting may even differ over time or depending on how hung over they were on the day.
2. The same applies for the blindstamp after it was introduced. It was not always in the same place (bottom-left or bottom-right). For some prints, in particular 'I Fought The Law', the blindstamp often goes over the edge of the print, regrettably giving the appearance that the print could have been cropped.
3. Likewise, there was no consistency with the placing (or not) of the black or red rubber stamp used for certain prints ('Rude Copper', 'HMV', 'Golf Sale' and 'Barcode').
4. As for signed prints, Banksy's signature style also varies of course.
5. Separately, the date next to the signature of signed prints (if dated at all) will depend on the date of signing. Nor is it always consistent in style. For example, in the case of 'Grin Reaper' (which took a long time to sell out), these have been dated "05", "06", "2006", and possibly "2005".
----------------
I hope this post will be of assistance, if only to give Forummers some comfort with respect to their own prints. The subject matter merits a thread of its own.
**Quite a few people with experience and knowledge of Banksy works, and the true desire to help out others, could just as easily have provided the above information. Although I have previously argued this point quite firmly, it is a real tragedy for this Forum that those people have been banned. I would repeat my request to Silky that he reconsider the banning with a view to reinstating those individuals.
I mention the above again, not for the purpose of "trouble-making", but in the higher interest of this Forum and its Forummers. Good, complete and accurate information should take priority over any personal ego issues or the fear of having one's ignorance or lack of experience exposed.
It would be highly unfortunate if Banksy fans came on this Forum to chat, but felt they necessarily also had to visit the Wall Candy forum when seeking reliable advice from those whose experience of Banksy exceeds two or three years.
I say this sincerely. One can only hope that this post will not be deleted or edited.
Good luck to all. hungrig/photo-bank

Banksy โข Barcode Print, by lesroy on May 19, 2007 23:22:05 GMT 1, I dont like it.
I have not seen that style of numbering on any other POW prints, I feel I can tell the handwriting even down to which member of staff at POW has done it. This looks "new" to me.
Best person to ask is "Police Aware"... he is an awesome Banksy Detective!

valid points, it would help greatly if there were recognisable faces that anyone of us, old or new, could just look up and ask for advice on particular prints and issues we might have with them. there is quite a lot of inconsistency with a lot of the earlier releases and my only bit of advice is to acertian all provenance ie a paper trail of where the print went after POW sold it, to wherever it may be offered for sale currently. if you can trace the history of it then you can be much more confident of it's legitamacy, without it you may as well back a lame nag down the bookies. few can say for certain if this print is or isn't the real deal and we can all make guesses, but there are a few people if you know where to find them (no, not the a-team), who can say with some authority how likely a print is to be genuine.

Banksy โข Barcode Print, by corisma on May 22, 2007 3:14:20 GMT 1, Hey all I also own a Barcode & was my first & fav print Not all were sold by Pow though i bought mine from ArtRepublic mid 2004 and my Red Banksy Stamp is in the bottom left corner not the right (did wonder about this for a while) but seems this is quite usual .. would be a bit dubious with no stamp at all though it kind of makes the print .. but does look quite genuine

Banksy โข Barcode Print, by corisma on May 22, 2007 18:49:47 GMT 1, I doubt Very Much that they're numbered by the place selling the print !! What if they messed them all up !?!
Most Barcodes were before Pow Stamping anyway
His numbering does look slightly similar to mine though mine's very straight and not slanted at an angle like his but hard to tell

Mine is a very low in the 300's and has POW stamp in the right hand corner and Red Banksy stamp in the left corner. So in theory at least half of Barcodes were blindstamped.

But to stick my thinkers hat on again, reckon it has something to with capitalism is an animal that will one day break free from its constraints (barcode cage) and cause mayhem, my god what have we done etc etc.
PS - Really liked his shark fin barcode too

Banksy โข Barcode Print, by saltandiron on Jun 21, 2007 16:46:47 GMT 1, Barcode for me everytime. Message wise I'm split between seeing it 1) as the vicious animal that's been kept caged behind the barcode being released and is coming to get us. capitalism bad dangerous etc etc.... 2) and sometimes I think its 'us' escaping an overly consumerist lifestyle and going on the prowl.
As slomo said Napalm is a bit photoshop. I also generally prefer Banksy's simpler stuff.

Banksy โข Barcode Print, by finsburyparkranger on Jun 21, 2007 17:18:50 GMT 1, When you have seen the image so much you kind of forget how you felt when you first saw it. I remember seeing both for the first time. When I saw barcode i remember thinking it was a well drawn image and a nice idea. When i saw napalm it was like BANG... my god, what a incredibly powerful statement ... I was amazed no one had banned it. It was like an artistic bomb. Its was sparking with controversy but also was amazingly succinct in telling a truth that was hard to explain in any other way. My mate has got one on his wall and I love seeing it when i go round there, if art ever came in a 'hard core' genre Nepalm would be the gold standard. For those reasons Nepalm any day of the week.

Banksy โข Barcode Print, by Strange Al on Jun 21, 2007 17:28:48 GMT 1, why does the image HAVE to have a meaning?
It depends how you interpret the word "meaning". Though for me art is all about the expression of the artist. Therefore by definition art has meaning. Agreed - it may not have meaning in the sense that it's a work which depicts a particular narrative theme or concept. Though, it has meaning in so far as it conveys an artist's moods, thoughts and feelings.
For me Barcode is one of the Banksy images which is much harder to read than his others. I'm not saying that's a bad thing. It's very possible that you are right - perhaps there is no narrative. I definitely think we often read much more into his work than he ever intended. Though fact is that most of his works do have some sort of socio-political message.
I can't now remember if Barcode appears in any of Banksy's books or if he's previously commented on it. Maybe someone else can remember if he has. That said, I do tend to prefer not hearing it from the artist's mouth - reality hardly ever lives up to fantasy.
