WHO WILL STAY?, by mattgold on Mar 26, 2011 16:08:10 GMT 1, I don't know if Haring belongs here... His natural company would be Warhol & Basquiat...
Does Hirst belong here? Parla definitely does... Takashi Murakami does... Probably make a good case for OS Gemeos too...
Some of the others on the list...meh. I doubt they will have the 'staying power' needed for another 10-20 years.

WHO WILL STAY?, by heathunter881 on Mar 26, 2011 16:27:56 GMT 1, love this topic. op definitely needs to add more name.
3 artist for in for the long haul, banksy, shepard, kaws. not sure how many kaws supports are on this site, but to me kaws is way ahead of his time. to do what he did in the mid-early 90's is just sick. i prefer kaws over murakami, and shepard before bansky.

KAWS vs Murakami discussion deserves it's own thread! =)
I'll reserve my comment until then.

WHO WILL STAY?, by manty on Mar 26, 2011 17:04:30 GMT 1, if there are say 10000 artists worldwide who have been selling art over the last couple of years, do you think more than 10 will make it into the books of art history?
We have around 100 guys in our street art thing selling, then surely no more than 2 will be known in 20 years,
The thing that i wonder at times is what classification artists fall under whether thats what they want or have chosen for them, Parla being an example of that.
Hirst, where does he sit in it all?
What I would like to know is, what are the genres in this current day artfest

Depends on which art history books will be available Manty. Untitled, Beyond The Street, Stencil Graffiti, Graffiti Woman, etc. There are hundreds of books which have documented artists who produce street work and sell it commercially. If those books are still around in future generations, then hundreds of artists will be documented and preserved in history. Maybe in 30 years there will be some ponce (a modern Brian Sewell) who attempts to select a couple of artists as significant contributors amongst their peer group. However, I think that market prices will be the deciding factor. Banksy and any other artist who has benefited from heavy investment will probably find themselves supported in auction houses and being presented in major museums.
Not sure that many artists like to be pigeon holed as street artists in the way that others have enjoyed the benefit of other labels, such as the YBAs. Eine, Retna and countless other 'street' artists sell work through a host of mediums from shopping bag designs to movie adverts. It is too simplistic to squeeze them into a single category. Jobbing artists might be more appropriate.
Where does Hirst sit in all this? Hirst sits on a throne telling talented 'minions' how he'd like his ideas to be translated onto canvases.

WHO WILL STAY?, by jojo21 on Mar 26, 2011 19:55:59 GMT 1, i fully agree that the list should be more exhaustive but unfortunately the polls on this forum only allow 10 answers.
i decided to add C215 because in my opinion he is the best stencilist, and we all know how stencil is a major technique of the movement, but of course parla, swoon, bast or eine and many others have their place here too...

we are talking here about a niche movement inside the global contemporary art. so why do you speak of koons or sherman? do you know that they dont belong here? i am sure you do, then so why?

was thinking the same thing about Dran the other day, all the hype around the xmas release. People buying his prints and flipping them next day to make 200 quid for xmas presents. I never heard of him before that??

WHO WILL STAY?, by Deleted on Mar 28, 2011 4:44:44 GMT 1, I maybe wrong but Sam3, Blu and Dran don't use stencils do they? They all seem pretty freehand to me.
As for Dran's rise to fame, I think your statement jj maybe shows that you dont look much further than Pow for your street artist info, rather than anything else. Dran has been around for fair while prior to getting the treatment last xmas.
(on another note, I'd have no idea why anyone would think C215 is the 'best stencillist' when his piece's for the most part nearly always show that he should have used more layers)

Dran may have been around for a while, but not discussed on this forum. The Dran section on here was only started late Decmeber 2010 (the POW release time). I am not having a pop at the artist, just saying I never heard of him on any forums or blogs etc. which I look at on a regular basis.. & was only agreeing with Lurker that he was super hyped up around xmas time.

WHO WILL STAY?, by invader2009 on Mar 28, 2011 9:58:02 GMT 1, I think 11 artists are ever entered in art history and will stay :
- Banksy (UK) --> the most famous - Shepard Fairey (USA) --> the most influent artist - Kaws (USA) --> He has the best galleries' network. - Invader (FR) --> the best concept - Swoon (USA) --> Artworks in the MOMA - Os Gemeos (BR) --> In the big collections. - JR (FR) --> TED prize and big projects - Faile (USA) --> In the big collections. - Blu (IT) --> Maybe the most talentuous. - Barry McGee (USA) --> Venise biennale, in all US museums. - Futura (USA) --> The best graffiti artists.
One point is major : who is known and sold in all over the world ? Who has or will have a major gallery ? Who is enter in the big Collections ? Who is sold at Christies and Sothebys ? Who is in all the major show in museum ? Answer --> all these artists
There is a list with challengers, maybe one or two will join the first list, they are : - Blek (FR) - C215 (FR) - Dran (FR) - Dface (UK) - Nick Walker (UK) - Jose Parla (US) - Seen (US) - Quik (US) - Crash (US) - Eine (UK) - Vhils (UK) - Roa (BEL)
All the others are in a third list but have no chance to leave a mark in art history. The best they can do is to join the second list but never the first.
Haring, Basquiat are not in the same dimension. They are ever in art history.

Also, as much as you all hate him, I am pretty sure Mr Brainwash could go in this list based on recent sales and his ascent into fame/notoriety.

WHO WILL STAY?, by jojo21 on Mar 30, 2011 4:12:32 GMT 1, my friend drymounted you are english i presume? i dont know why but for me dolk is a good artist but not very famous internationally.
i think invader2009 made a good analysis and i even wonder: are you franck the invader? i think you are. but i fully agree with point.
the topic is quite interesting i beleive as we are all convinced about the fact that our movement is the last one of the 20th century, and will be in the near future like the pop art movement nowadays.
so we all have to ask ourselves the question of who will stay.
me i am bying everyprints of shepard that i can grab on the bay for a reasonable price. i know he produce a lot but still it remains small money (100-400)
i make a bet on the future but i am sure that for followers it will be totally affordable.
anyway i missed banksy and i am too scared to try to get one with all the fakes around.
same for faile.
JR is way to expensive but the prints are kicking ass. ben eine is a speculative bubble. invader is the best concept and it even make itself accepted by almost all the most reticent people.
and i already told you that i think that C215 has that unique talent that you will all see when you have your eyes opened.

WHO WILL STAY?, by Drymounted on Mar 30, 2011 7:39:33 GMT 1, <=- From Las Vegas =) Based on the press I've seen (non US press), Dolk has made a splash outside of the US. Also, his Brooklynite exhibit was quite a success from what I hear. Add that to the fact that the price of his works are slowly climbing, and he seems to be near that top tier.
Curious as to how Mr Brainwash was left off of the list. I'd say he, Banksy and Shep are the 3 most NOTABLE to the non-street art lovers. I've had several people that don't follow the street art world, point out MBWs on my wall, by name.
