iPhone 4, by sohohoho on Mar 29, 2011 22:17:46 GMT 1, I'm looking to an iPhone nerd for advice before diving into an upgrade. My current phone is an iPhone 3GS on o2.
What is the most cost effective way to own an iPhone 4?
What are the pros and cons of buying an iPhone 4 sim free?
How much would a sim free iPhone 4 set you back? Anyone got one for sale?
What about buying from abroad?
Can't believe you have to pay an extra ยฃ6 a month for data these days. What happened to unlimited 3G? I presume the majority of the ยฃ6 is for access to public Wi-Fi like BT Openzone? How does using your home Wi-Fi affect your allowance?
Sorry for all the questions but my head is battered!

Those reasons for not having an iPhone-4 were made prior to it being released (ignore the article date and read down to see it was originally posted prior to the 4G release) and to be quite frank most of them are so untrue they are almost laughable. I have one and as far as I am concerned it is brilliant (but then I am biased because I love it ;D).
Regarding the original questions, I don't know what is the most cost effective, I am on a ยฃ35 tariff and happy with it. Sim free iPhones are only available from the Apple store and are not tied to any network. My second iPhone4 cost me ยฃ699 (my first contract phone was stolen in a house burglary two days after getting it, fortunately I got paid out from my house insurance). I don't know about buying from abroad, and my data charges are all included in the ยฃ35 tariff up to a ridiculous amount that I have never exceeded.
Whether they are worth upgrading from a iPhone 3GS is another matter, I think it is, but as said I am biased . But if you want to see what can be done with the video option on the 4 have a look at the clip I took below.

i have an iphone 4 after upgrading from the iphone 3. if you are connected to wifi, it does not come out of your allowances..

That's what I'm going with. I'm still happy with my 3GS and wait for the next generation that has no problems with the connection when you hold it in your hands ;D
Judging from the last two years, iPhone5 should be around in summer.

Yes, it wouldn't surprise me if there's announcement at the Apple Developer's conference in June.

As to the reception problems on iPhone 4, whilst no doubt an issue, they've been somewhat overplayed IMO. I've personally not experienced any issues, though do use a case. (appreciate your comments were tongue in cheek)

iPhone 4, by rowan on Mar 30, 2011 9:59:54 GMT 1, The iphone 5 will likely be out in July... (if you can wait that long) Likely to have a larger screen, faster procesor and possibly a better camera!
I presume that they will be shipping iphone 4's with the new 4.3 software which can be jailbroken but it is a tethered jailbreak which means you need to plug it into your pc to turn it on/off... However an untethered jailbreak is on its way!!!
o2 & Tesco do some pretty good pay as you go deal, something like 250mins, 500text and 500meg of internet for ยฃ10 but hold fire as the new tarrifs from o2 will be announced at the start of April...
Buying a phone on a 12 month contract from Tesco plus paying the monthly fee's is almost the same price as buying a phone on pay as you go and a seperate sim!!!...
But If you can afford it and are willing to wait, i'd hang fire for the iphone 5!
Otherwise spend ยฃ90 at Argos and buy yourself a Sanfrancisco which runs android and can be unlocked, debranded and rooted (jailbroken) for free. It's a top quality phone for the price, it'll play all the Angry Bird and Android market games you want and will keep you going until the iphone 5 launch!

iPhone 4, by stenev on Mar 30, 2011 10:10:45 GMT 1, I know that June is the usual release schedule but the rumours are leaning more towards it being a later release. Some sources with great contacts within apple are saying it's software only at the WWDC this year. I think they will give details of iOS 5 at the event which will then ship with the iphone 5 later in the year.
So don't hold out for a summer release!

iPhone 4, by lojack on Mar 30, 2011 13:26:36 GMT 1, In the US we have an untethered jailbreak (because I'm using it) so you might wanna look into that rowan.
And from what I've heard most expect the iPhone 5 late summer. Like july or August.
Honestly though what more can they possibly add to the new phone? It might be a smidgen faster and thinner but that's probably it
