Advice on framing Aluminium??, by stang on Apr 12, 2011 14:58:20 GMT 1, Hi All,
I have a 90x60 piece on Aluminium that I want to get on the wall. I thought about sticking it in a trayframe with a 3mm space but obviously I'm going to have to use some adhesive to get it to stay put and I was concerned about damaging the value of the piece in the long term.
I have an Eelus aluminium piece that I bought framed and that seems to be set on a bed of silicone. Is this the only way to mount these aluminium pieces if I go for a trayframe?
Any other alternative hanging suggestions would be much appreciated!!
Cheers

Advice on framing Aluminium??, by stang on Apr 12, 2011 19:27:09 GMT 1, The local framer just phoned me back and he says he's found some 2 part epoxy resin that's reversible! But he has admitted that I would be he's first attempt of using this system so not sure if I want to hold that accolade!
Good idea that Wiz, I have a friend who got me some heavy duty double sided velcro for some signage a few years ago so that could work! You can swing out of that stuff!
The Eelus is the 'Keep your eyes on the prize' from the Brooklynite show last year with the kid sitting on the french bulldog. Not sure if I have a pic on this machine but will post if I have. Cheers

Steel is stronger but will rust though unlike the alloy...
Which has always concerned me...
Alot of sheet metal picecs seem to be mounted in those shallow tray frames though... Just ask Gary aka Mr Framerman

Advice on framing Aluminium??, by stang on Apr 14, 2011 18:18:23 GMT 1, Thanks guys, very happy with it! I see what you mean coach, there's something slightly Supine about it, think it's the face and placement of the hands, but still unmistakable MB.

Advice on framing Aluminium??, by Phear Loathing on Apr 18, 2011 3:57:30 GMT 1, After talking with my usual framer I think I will frame in a aluminum tray frame, using spring clips.
Now the question (for me anyways) is glass or no glass (would obviously use museum)?
Stang hope you don't mind me asking this in your thread. Figured it was kind of dumb to start another 'framing an aluminum piece' thread.
Also Stang, did u find anything out about what your going to do?

Thought I had a bit of a eureka moment when I remembered that 3M make a fairly heavy duty adhesive magnet. So I was going to stick them to the frame and just pop the piece in. I bathed in some short lived glory before I realised aluminium is not magnetic....better to have discovered that now I suppose!
There is the option to stick a north pole magnet to the piece and a south pole to the frame but you'd have to line them up perfectly so I think I'm gonna go with another product from 3M called Dual Lock which is a heavy duty double sided velcro.
You can get it on ebay; but there are dozens of suppliers on line either
cgi.ebay.co.uk/3M-DUAL-LOCK-SJ3560-25mm-X-1m-roll-/280554511719?pt=UK_DIY_Material_Nails_Fixing_MJ&hash=item41525a1d67#ht_1326wt_905
Also there's this magnetic tape, which works out cheaper but not sure how strong it is;
cgi.ebay.co.uk/3m-Self-Adhesive-Magnetic-Tape-Magnet-Strip-12mm-/270659516540?pt=UK_Crafts_Other_Crafts_EH&hash=item3f0490787c#ht_536wt_905
Whatever option I go with it's going in a black tray frame like the Eelus with no glass. To be honest I'm probably being a bit over delicate with the whole thing, I'm sure it would be just as good to beat it into the frame ontop of half a dozen tubes of bathroom silicone! Looking forward to seeing yours framed up - keep me updated........
