Ripper1331 ๐บ๐ธ Crucipod โข Print Release โข Art For Sale, by Ripper1331 on Oct 28, 2007 22:45:37 GMT 1, Just got back from the Vinyl Killers 5 show in Portland and had some new prints made up while there.
I'll be posting a process thread about how they are made from the stencil through the printing process later this week once I get all the pics together.
Here's a preview of one of the prints - Andy decided he needed a few neon pink ones for the DF wall...

Ripper1331 ๐บ๐ธ Crucipod โข Print Release โข Art For Sale, by Ripper1331 on Nov 1, 2007 0:19:23 GMT 1, 3 new prints were done up in Portland last week and there's 1 color of each, the pinks aren't a variant or anything just us monkeying around, and "the system works" one is shown in the process thread. The other one is a secret but Rabbitlegs might be happy with it
Not sure on release dates but work has slowed down a bit with the FEAR Files project done and coming out next Wed but I should get one out by the end of the year and 2 of the 3 will be under $100.

Ripper1331 ๐บ๐ธ Crucipod โข Print Release โข Art For Sale, by Ripper1331 on Oct 31, 2007 18:42:21 GMT 1, While I was up in Portland for VK5 Klutch and I spent a day at Diesel Fuel having some prints done and Andy let me take pics of the whole process.
Here are the steps from stencil to print - not everything is here as I didn't take screenshots while in Photoshop but if you have any questions feel free to ask.
1) Start with your final stencil piece that you want to make into a print. This is "The System Works" from 2005.
instead of scanning the original and dealing with color seps I just busted out the old stencils.
2) Stencils
3) Spraying - I spray everything on white paper using just solid black
4) Scanning - since these stencils are all small, text is about 10 inches and the corporate vandal is about 3.5", I scan them at 400% and 300 dpi
5) I take the separate scanned images then run them through the threshold option and clean up any little bits and pieces (I have no shots here but if you need that I'll take some)
6) I make the print file which will be 18"x24" and make the working area 16"x22"
7) I take the solid image of the man and move into the print file and once adjusted for size and positioning punch it out of the background color since the paper will be the white layer.
8) I take the other layer of the man and match that up with the punched out layer. I also do some editing as I wasn't keen on his hands in the first one - the next group of corporate vandals will have hooks I think.
I also bring in the text, fill in the bridges and merge that into 1 black layer. I messed around with red text in photoshop but didn't like it at the larger size and the black text just looked stronger from a distance.
9) Make the color selections using Pantone chips and label the layers appropriately. This image only has 2 layers so its not that big a deal getting everything in line.
10) Send files to Andy and then sit back and wait or go up to Diesel Feul and watch them make it.
11) Stop briefly to sticker the dumpster beside the door
12) The separate layers are then printed out to film for burning
13) The print monkeys get ready to work and form their plan of attack
14) I'm just throwing this in here to make people crazy - here's an old original Swoon from one of the Process Invisible shows with a new head in the shop.
15) Screen is coated and burned
16) Screen is dried - note the large power cable on the floor as safety is first.
17) Ink is mixed by eye to the chip specs
18) Screen is in place in the press and the ink is applied to the screen
19) First one comes off and we inspect for any flaws
20) After 1 minor adjustment the run begins
21) Stack of the prints with the first layer down drying
22) Lunch across the street
23) repeat step 13
24) Black layer screen is burned
25) Second screen is registered with the first layer and the process begins again giving the final 2 layer print.
After the final layer prints are sent to the cutter, boxed and then shipped out.
If you have any questions feel free to ask.

There should be something by the end of next month though.

Ripper1331 ๐บ๐ธ Crucipod โข Print Release โข Art For Sale, by alsky on Nov 1, 2007 4:21:02 GMT 1, The print looks great! It is really refreshing to see an artist show the process of a print being made. Personally, it makes me appreciate the print a lot more having seen all the hard work that has gone into it.
By the way, are you planning on doing a special forum release in a different colour way (i.e. like the red Crucipod)? I'm sure all your fans would really appreciate it!

Ripper1331 ๐บ๐ธ Crucipod โข Print Release โข Art For Sale, by Ripper1331 on Nov 1, 2007 16:54:09 GMT 1, Thanks Alsky!
No special colorways for any of these ones and not sure if I would do special colorways again - I think it works with some images but for the most part different colorways are just an easy way to cash in so if there was to be something for the forum I would just make a forum exclusive print in the future.
Thanks Alsky!

I'm also big on only showing the pics of the actual print as I have bought several prints that look quite a lot different than the final image used to sell it, brightness and detail, and want people to see what they would actually get in the mail.

Ripper1331 ๐บ๐ธ Crucipod โข Print Release โข Art For Sale, by marshman on Feb 27, 2008 16:56:27 GMT 1, Just a shout out to say that Tim (ripper1331) is a top geezer indeed, he always throws a couple of surprises into the tubes (stickers and the such like) which make a welcome addition to wherever you want to stick them, but this time he excelled himself as he chucked in version 3 of 3 of the pink unablaster.
I thought it was a mistake so I checked with him and no it was just a great gesture. No matter what you think of the print I have a pink one and i think it is the only one this side of the pond as the others went to his mates. I like being special.....
p.s it comes with a warning to keep out of the sun otherwise it WILL fade! LOL

Ripper1331 ๐บ๐ธ Crucipod โข Print Release โข Art For Sale, by Ripper1331 on Mar 17, 2008 3:29:14 GMT 1, Hereโs a quick step-by-step process of how I do multilayered stencils onto canvas.
Start with everything you need handy. Iโve got some 6โx6โ canvases, the paint is pulled, an old cigar box full of caps and the stencils are out. Excuse the overall mess of the spraying area as I havenโt swept it out since last fall.
Iโve sprayed 3 of the canvases with white and one with blue. I like these ones in a gloss finish so I am using Montana for the colors but just use Painters Touch for the blacks and whites โ I find they dry quicker than the Montana and less prone to being goopy.
First stencils go down for the background.
The first layer of the main piece then goes on about 15 minutes later. There are 2-3 coats of white to get it to cover up the layers below.
The second layer is now in place. I donโt use registration marks in the normal way, and there isnโt a whole lot of room on a 6 inch canvas to make them, so the layers have the registration cut into them. Keep in mind if making 3+ layer stencils that you will eventually hide some of those layers with the final black layer so you can cut extra to give you registration.
Here is an example of the registration cut into the layer. The shadow on LBJโs fingers, hand and cheek are used to register the layer. You can see Iโve c**ked the registration up a bit on Rubyโs ear but not bad enough to do over. Weโll fix it later.
Now the black layer goes down and we have JFK, Oswald, Ruby and LBJ looking alright. You can see that there is underspray in several places most noticeably with JFKโs head. I like the effect of underspray, I hate overspray so that is never tolerated, as it adds a bit of extra character to the pieces and itโs impossible to avoid with older stencils.
Quick note about the stencils โ I feel that the final layer should always be able to stand on itโs own and you should be able to see what the image is just with that layer. I like the rest of the layers to enhance the final layer but not be needed if you want to break the image down further.
These stencils were cut out of thick card, like a record cover, and have held up through numerous sprays quite well. You can cut out of thin plastic but I donโt like the way it cuts so I donโt use it.
Now we have everyone looking good itโs time to jam them. These guys are getting the Kiss treatment.
JFK and Oswald need only this layer and they are pretty much done, Ruby and LBJ have a few more layers to go.
Iโve taken JFK and Oswald in to touch up while the other 2 are drying. You can see that there are some bridges to fix and some other minor issues to correct. I just use a paint pen to cover these areas and enhance anything else I feel needs it. JFK will have his suit added to so that isnโt just floating on the canvas and a few highlights.
Touch ups are finished and they are left to dry. Now back to the other pair.
Ruby gets his make up and LBJ gets his eyeliner. Itโs hard to see but I lightly dusted LBJ with the final black layer again to register the blue for the eye makeup.
Ruby has his final black layer from step 6 put down again to blend the nose and eye makeup into the face. Heโs done and will get a few touch ups with the marker while LBJ gets another round.
LBJ has his black layer from step 6 put down again to blend his make up and heโs done and ready for any touch ups.
All touch ups are done and the edges of the canvases have been painted with black gesso. Now Iโll just leave them to fully dry out over the next week and they are finished.
If you have any questions feel free to ask.
Cheers, Ripper
