The £50 Art Thread, by Mike Marcus on Nov 30, 2008 14:53:12 GMT 1, For December I am releasing a larger than usual edition at slightly smaller dimensions in order to offer each print at a very special price. I thought that I would give you lot a heads-up in advance.
CS #7 - Self portrait under the influence of tear gas 40x50cm Digital C-type print on RC archival paper Edition of 94, signed, numbered and dated £45 +p&p Release date: 8th December
"CS is the most common form of tear gas. Its use by military forces is forbidden under the Geneva Convention and the Chemical Weapons Convention of 1997. However during the first year of the Al-Aqsa intifada alone the Israeli Defense Forces used 120,000 tear gas grenades against Palestinians as a form of racially motivated collective punishment.
"Although the Jews own encounter with the gas chambers makes the use of chemical warfare notable for its irony, it is only one example of many human rights abuses exercised by Israel during its 41 years of military occupation.
"To encourage awareness of the continuing violations enacted by my people against a weak and vulnerable minority and to register my protest, as an ethnic Jew against the injustices carried out in my name, I exposed myself to CS gas and photographed the results.
"I had no other way to cry."

I thought the point of this thread was for forum members to post links to stuff which are real bargains.. Not for artists to come on here and hawk their wares.... go do some voluntary work for amnesty international if you want to help combat social injustices and violations

The £50 Art Thread, by Prescription Art on Nov 30, 2008 22:54:49 GMT 1, Why 'a new low'? Personally I think it's an interesting piece. Even if only for the reason that I've never seen anyone close up under the influence of Tear Gas before.
Admittedly i'd also never seen a stormtrooper doing a shit until it was brought out as a screenprint, but I feel that this has added slightly more to my levels of human understanding.

The £50 Art Thread, by raiden on Nov 30, 2008 23:28:21 GMT 1, I agree, I liked that this piece and the description made me think for a second and taught me something new. I actually rather like it and salute the artist for sharing it. It clearly is a heart felt piece with some really deep messages and while in the end aesthetically I think its too disturbing for my wall with the snot and what not, I am glad I was exposed to it. As art, it did what it was intended, changed my worldview and understanding of conflict in the world.
I agreed with stuey1980, when someone is shooting down an artist after they are posting a heartfelt piece that took lots of sacrifice to produce, that is a "new low" for the board and frankly, drbastard, I think you should move on from this forum.
Its one thing if someone is hammering on a successful artists like Kaws, MBW, Faile, Fairey, etc., who can have a bit thicker skin because they are making a decent living off art and can wrap themselves in the warm blanket of knowing they have a huge fan base or can seek solace by revisiting their past clippings from Art Forum, Juxtapoz, etc. They invite critique based on their stature. It goes with the territory.
Its wholly another thing to attack an artist directly for a piece they put a lot of work into. What license do you have to attack any emerging or semi-established artists? Have you tried to put together a print release? What have you painted from your heart that we can take a go of attacking and belittling?
This forum often tries to find the next Hirst, the next Banksy, the next next. Encouraging people to experiment with art is the way that happens. Beating them down does exactly the opposite and worse, mutes opinions that frankly I value more than yours...
Beyond that, Mike Marcus has put together some really great prints in the past that were well reviewed by the forum. You should check them out. He's an extremely talented guy who I would be pissed if was at all turned off of continuing his contributions by this comment.
What makes this forum better than almost any other art forum is the number of artists who contribute... We have major artists who were launched off this forum and who actively contribute. Be careful what you say, as you don't know who is reading this board...
I'm possibly as critical as anyone, but I would never have stooped to the low of attacking the merit of an artists work when he clearly he put a lot of time and thought into it.

The £50 Art Thread, by Mike Marcus on Dec 1, 2008 0:35:13 GMT 1, I'm sorry f5ers if you felt that I was not entitled to post here. Rifling through the hundreds of previous posts I saw that many artists have directly advertised their own print release here and many forum members have not only approved but often bought the aforementioned work.
This work is self published (if it was released through a gallery you would be paying twice as much for it) and therefore I do not have a representative to market it for me. I know that the work is more inflammatory than most of the urban art available but thats the kind of artist that I am. However, if there is a consensus that this is not the appropriate forum to advertise such releases I will be happy to refrain from posting on this thread in the future.
Personally rather than (or in fact in addition to) volunteering for human rights organisations, I choose to combat social injustice through my art. I cant think what could possibly be wrong with doing that. Surely using my art to express issues which are deeply disturbing to me has more value than churning out sugar coated sanitised banksy clones like some others do?

The £50 Art Thread, by dill on Dec 1, 2008 0:48:36 GMT 1, ... I would have thought all those virgins would have been encouragement enough.... although if I was going to self detonate, I would appreciated women with a bit more experience. Give me 72 slappers any day!
By the way I think you got off lightly with the tear gas, a mate of mine years ago got a full blast of mace in the face, and ended up in casualty with blisters the size of marbles... I think you were lucky there (don't do it again!)

The £50 Art Thread, by Mike Marcus on Dec 1, 2008 0:55:53 GMT 1, It was a light dose. I have been gassed much more heavily in palestine while trying to photograph the realities of the occupation.
I have much to say on the issue but I'm concerned that talk of human rights abuses, self detonation the relative merits of sex with virgins will take this thread off topic.

The £50 Art Thread, by dill on Dec 1, 2008 1:07:17 GMT 1, the last thread I got involved in, in a political discussion got swiftly locked when it became abusive. I like most people am not short of strongly held opinions, but I have discovered this forum is probably not the best place to discuss them!
As you have already discovered even showing your art can raise some hackles ( I must say i think the attack on you was completely unjustified)
so I think you are absolutely right, once you start getting involved in political/religious issues here you are entering a whole world of pain.
So lets just stick to the art is my new found opinion

The £50 Art Thread, by f5ers on Dec 1, 2008 1:14:06 GMT 1, Its just annoys me when every other thread on this forum is somebody trying to hawk their 'new creation'... Theres a whole section on here for new artists to post new stuff
banksyforum.proboards82.com/index.cgi?board=artwork
I don't quite get the point of your print either... what did you think would happen when you gassed yourself?? Running eyes, nose, coughing puking maybe. I can see you are passionate about your cause and beliefs but i don't see how this conveys your message and plight of Jewish oppression in Israel.

Mikemarcus: Ignore the haters and please stay on the forum, you are a welcome addition from where I am sitting and its good to see it being mixed up a little and that not everything looks the same.
I stared at you picture for a good 5 minutes and had a lot of thoughts about what you wrote about it, and in that effect it has done its job.
Congrats on a very strong piece of art, but with strong art expect strong criticism

It seems to me that the point of the print is explained very well in the original post. Personally I think it's an excellent piece & conveys it's intended message clearly & powerfully. I'm not sure I see the problem with it being posted in this thread either. It's art and it's under 50 quid.

Hi F5ers, I disagree strongly. If it's under a nifty,it has a rightful place in this thread imho. This is somewhere we come to find something we like at a nice, affordable price. Personally, I have enjoyed reading what MM has had to say about this piece, even though my views differ somewhat and I wouldn't want to buy the image for my wall. As others have already said however, I too am pleased to have come across the piece and its' creator here.
