If you else grew up in the late '80s or during the '90s listening to socially- and politically-conscious punk then like myself you were probably an Operation Ivy fan. Jesse Michaels, who was the lead singer of the band, has gone on to form a couple of other amazing bands and has published a novel but he's also a painter, so I thought I'd share this for those know might know the man but not know his art.

Basquiats work seems to suffer a lot from all-out biting. I'm not jumping in to massively new territory with my any of my work but I always try and stay away from just ripping any other artists off.
Basquiat isn't a genre/style/era of art like Abstraction or Impressionism, you can't just bite his iconic work or work inside his style and expect to get away with it. I normally wouldn't say anything either 'cause im just not that guy, but I seem to be bombarded with Basquiat copycats on a much too regular basis.
Be inspired and influenced like the man himself!! (see his Twombly/Van Gogh/Picasso +more inspired/"after"/influenced works!) Don't just rip him off!
This is mostly just coming from my love of fresh new work not any personal hatred haha, I just think it's crazy people are buying into copies and not originality!
Again, I'm not that guy honest.. haha Sorry for the lil' rant!
(edit: Just because he's been creating this type of work for a long time doesn't even nearly excuse him either!)
