Heather Dewey-Hagborg
This I found interesting. For this series of work the artist takes DNA from discarded items like cigarette butts or chewing gum. From that she endeavours to create a sculpture representing what the person who discarded the item, and thus their own DNA might look like. It raises interesting questions regarding privacy and the ownership of discarded items.

Artists You Might Not Know, by Deleted on Mar 1, 2016 21:45:54 GMT 1, Pardon?
are you saying the artist finds a bit of chewed gum, then from the DNA the gum has, she then builds a face and if you found the person that ate the gum, the faces would match?
Really?
really truly?
Pardon?

Yes, yes, I very much doubt it.

From her website, the section relating to this body of work, "Stranger Visions"
In Stranger Visions artist Heather Dewey-Hagborg creates portrait sculptures from analyses of genetic material collected in public places. Working with the traces strangers unwittingly leave behind, Dewey-Hagborg calls attention to the developing technology of forensic DNA phenotyping and the potential for a culture of biological surveillance. Designed as an exploratory project based on emerging science, the forecast of Stranger Visions has proved prescient. For an example of DNA phenotyping at work in forensics check out the companies Parabon NanoLabs and Identitas and read about their collaboration with the Toronto police. Also see Mark Shriver's research at Penn State on predicting faces from DNA. For my analysis of the issues of structural racial bias embedded in this new technique see my article "Sci-fi Crime Drama with a Strong Black Lead" at the New Inquiry magazine.

I have neglected this thread recently, and am enjoying reading it again. My pleasure. I feel there are a lot of artists that fall between the cracks of the latest hype machine and the "oh no, we lost a legend obit." This thread shines the light on them.

Artists You Might Not Know, by bigv on Mar 1, 2016 23:32:54 GMT 1, Daisuke Okamoto. I've got a couple of his original mini Flags (commissioned an American Flag and bought a Canadian one from The Hive Gallery in LA) and he's got some really crazily detailed pen on paper pieces that depict monuments and landmarks from his Organic Nationalism series. He's a really nice guy and will do commissioned originals on request. In fact, my girlfriend and I plan on commissioning him for little flags for ever country we visit together which will be cool on the wall eventually.
