judgement day, by Andy'77 on Jun 20, 2007 7:19:48 GMT 1, Having seen both FF and JD in the flesh in my opinion I'd say JD wins hands down, I like FF but but the size of JD really works in it's favour and the print quality is spot on. However maybe I'm just saying that as I didn't manage to get a FF.

judgement day, by tadghostal on Jun 25, 2007 19:09:53 GMT 1, FF everytime for me...its a classic....its sad....it has a message
Anybody mind if I take a crack at JD vs. FF?
On the surface, FF is an easier image to like. It has the same effect as a witty comic (like the Far Side, Dilbert, Calvin and Hobbes, etc) in that there is a simple cleverness in expressing an idea. You see FF, and it's easy to smile. JD, on the other hand, is a bit of a beast. The weaponry is heavier, and all up in your face. The image itself seems a bit messy, and somewhat chaotic. And the shooters are cherubs. The effect is unsettling, and maybe even a bit irritating to some. The first time I saw it, I thought "ughhh, not only is that obvious, but it's total overkill."
Time and exposure change many things. Including that opinion.
Now, FF seems a bit like decaffeinated coffee; all the bitterness, but without the punchy kick. I look at JD, and the layers of interpretation are amazing. Right now, I'm enjoying the fact that JD clearly expresses the inseparable nature of war and religion--you never seem to have one without the other. It also seems to capture the wet dreams of Priests and Politicians; two groups of egomaniacal and utterly useless people that nonetheless persuade the rest of us to unleash hell on earth for BS abstract ideas; both seem to rely on a "might makes right" argument--one is military might, and the other is the "supreme" universal might, and combined you end up with the universal absurdity of a war endorsed by God. And there you have it: God's mischevious little love bugs gladly handling centcom's finest equipment.
Its insanity.
JD distills that insanity perfectly. Dammit. Can you believe I passed on a FF earlier this year at 750GBP, and could have had both JD and FF for 1100? I really would like to get both those on the walls now. . .

Still cool though, just wish the hearts weren't there

Cupid had been flying overhead, and was pierced by two rounds. The hearts are to Cupid what splattered blood would be to a human being; they are the forensic evidence of the location Cupid was when the wounds were inflicted.
At least, that's how I've always seen it.
(aren't there two wounds on Cupid, and/or two shell casings on the ground that correspond with the hearts?)

Fantastic appraisal of the image -
I think you've hit the nail on the head. y'know - Ive never considered its meaning like that - I generally look at mine and become distracted by the blurred faces of the cherubs - there's something unsettling, but morbidly compelling about the way Micallef does faces.

I never expected to feel so dirty and used on an art forum. What a nice surprise.
