Swap for Banksy or Antony Micallef, by jB on Jul 27, 2007 4:29:57 GMT 1, I like this piece a lot. Kaws however seems to have the majority of his fan base in Asia. I'm curious to see what this goes for. I've been watching it on fleaBay, not a whole lot of demand though. It's kindof a shame!

Swap for Banksy or Antony Micallef, by meatbag on Jul 27, 2007 5:00:20 GMT 1, agreed. his stuff has just starting taking off and I may be a wee bit premature on this one. I'm just hankering to get a Micallef. If there isn't much more action I'm going to pull it and wait another 6 months are so. It is an awesome print and he's done so few limited runs. Not including his canvas work, but his latest prints have been based on his toys and produced in relatively high volume with multiple colorways. Just not feeling those. Give me the original NYC bus shelter throw ups anyday! These will only be harder and harder to get and be a solid investment.

Swap for Banksy or Antony Micallef, by bobbymeachamjr on Jul 27, 2007 6:46:47 GMT 1, I like the dissected prints but they have not gone up at all since its release. In fact some have been selling below retail. Truth is, Kaws is about his toys and maybe his originals. His following is toys first and prints maybe 3rd (behind his clothes). Ebay will attest to that.

Swap for Banksy or Antony Micallef, by jB on Jul 27, 2007 6:57:12 GMT 1, I'm also curious to hear from those that collect these toys, now I can understand having a D* Dog or something like that, but that whole culture is foreign to me. Please elaborate

Swap for Banksy or Antony Micallef, by manchestermike on Jul 27, 2007 7:26:47 GMT 1, Hmmm... have to say KAWS in general does absolutely nothing at all for me I've seen a few bits and every single one leaves me cold... best of luck with it though. If the value is as you say you may get a lesser known D*Face canvas... 21CL is going for about $12k+ now so that I doubt... good luck all the same

Swap for Banksy or Antony Micallef, by tokyojeff on Jul 27, 2007 7:52:56 GMT 1, KAWS is most certainly centered here in Japan. There are huge individual collectors of these toys and clothing. And can be found in all the specialty toy stores. Manga (comics) are read by everyone. The old Japanese salaryman can be found in any subway/train clutching one of these comic books. Now most of these are NOT your typical batman/superman mind you, they are very adult in content and can be very sexually explicit. Nonetheless it is a very big part of the culture and society here. Hope that helps

Swap for Banksy or Antony Micallef, by dgb133 on Jul 27, 2007 16:14:02 GMT 1, If you like Kaws look for the new issue of Arkitip featuring Kaws and a specially designed laptop case designed by him. It's a bargain I think. $65 retail US which is only a little more than the plain incase sleeves usually sell for.
I'm not a huge fan of his work. But I have seen his bus shelters sell for $10,000 and up so he definitely has a strong following. I also wonder if his focus on toys hurts his fine art appeal?
