Banksy original on Scambay!, by dave313perry on Jul 23, 2007 20:34:06 GMT 1, My Boss told me about this today and i cant seem to find a thread on it....
item.. 250144588250
Seems like a well exicuted Scam to me, why put an original on ebay!?
In the auction there is a flikr set of pics - is it just me or on closer inspection are the two images on there aswel as the one on the auction all slightly different, really really slightly, ignoring the fact it has obviously aged and weathered, the actual stencil seems slightly amiss!!
Opinions appreciated (like i can afford it )

Banksy original on Scambay!, by tadghostal on Jul 23, 2007 20:39:12 GMT 1, The vast majority of Banksy's have a fairly obvious quality that just reeks "Banksy." I'd suggest that quality is missing from this piece. Not saying it isn't a Banksy, but somebody would need to do some serious convincing to make me believe that it was.

It's already ยฃ7000 odd so it's out of reach anyhow.

Banksy original on Scambay!, by rabbitlegs on Jul 23, 2007 21:00:13 GMT 1, Like the piece and the message, but as you say tadghostal seems minus the 'Reek' ?
The price is certainly rocketing though.
Could be a steal ( like the dodgy looking 'Hand-Sprayed' Gift from John Carter the DJ ) On eBay 12months ago +/- ...A riot cop with no wings but had legs. Sprayed on card?
Or it could be something I knocked up in the back garden....( It isnt in case you were thinking the worst ) but you get my drift,
Buying unauthenticated pieces of street art at such high values and without bulletproof Prov. is very risky IMO.

It looks exactly like a Banksy to me. I don't know for certain that it is, but it's certainly his style.
I'd be prepared to bet that it's genuine... but not 8 grand!

still seems fake

Banksy original on Scambay!, by stillborncrisps on Jul 23, 2007 23:28:49 GMT 1, Looks like the same board that's on Flickr - check the wood grain, that'd be impossible to match up in a repro.
But yeah, the only prov is a set of photos on Flickr and people's memory, but that's no different to the metal 'What?' cut from that newsguy's stand in Tottenham Court Road (London) and some gallery was trying to flog that piece for ยฃ250,000.

Banksy original on Scambay!, by dave313perry on Jul 23, 2007 23:39:42 GMT 1,
This is the one that was for sale, there are three pics in total.
On each pic the drip in the bottom left of white paint is different in length from what i can see - and actually in a different place!??
Iv just taken them both into photoshop also and analysing it really closely the face is slightly out of scale and shape and too much detail, i would alsmost garuntee you 99.9% its not real
although i would say cameras can do funny things and sometimes lie (legal disclaimer! )

Banksy original on Scambay!, by dave313perry on Jul 23, 2007 23:51:45 GMT 1, final reckoning on my part +
both pics on ebay are the fake the one pic on flikr of the board on the building is legit the other flikr pic (close up front on) is actually the fake before it was left to the weather for a few weeks and added abit of tagging too it!
Ha Iv just realised!...look at the pic on ebay and the size of the board doesnt correspond with the picture of it on the building, the scale just doesnt add up!!! yup 100% sure now. the stencil is far too small in comparison to the size of board on the original! just call me sherlock
What you think???

Lets have a butchers at the two images superimposed if you can of the different marks next to each other dave. Just for fun. If you've not put images up on the forum its dead easy just put them into photobucket.com and post the 'img' code.

Rabbitlegs, I have NOTHING to gain from telling you this but the hand sprayed copper you refer to is 100% genuine!! I have seen it in the flesh and I am aware that research has been done, the relevant people have confirmed verbally where this piece originated from and it now hangs pride of place on the purchasers wall! It seems that just once in a while you can obtain a genuine original by sheer chance for no money!! I am just gutted that I didn't get to it first or have the contacts that the buyer had to confirm its authenticity before committing to buy! Just thought you might be interested!

Sorry dont believe that for a minute, the size of the board differs from the image of it in the street, the scale is wrong of the image in proportion with the board, so either the board he is selling is a fake or the picture of it on the building is fake, sorry cant get the pics up as iv just got to work and if i start messing around with pics il get sacked!!!

Banksy original on Scambay!, by johnas on Jul 24, 2007 10:08:29 GMT 1, right, lets break this down.
firstly, there are 2 'security' images on flickr. They are not the same (the boards are different sizes FACT).
The piece on ebay:
only corresponds with one of the photos on flickr:
the drips are the same, the 'true' graffiti is the same, even the knot in the wood (underneath 'true') is the same. If you ask me, they're the same piece.
The flickr photos were uploaded in 2005. That's quite some dedication in order to produce a fake.
HOWEVER, the flickr photo doesn't really show it in situ (it's a close up photo), and could quite easily just be in someones back yard. There's no prov as far as i know of Banksy producing this image (in any of his books - tell me if i'm wrong) and no tag etc.
I don't doubt that the ebay image and the flickr image are the same. The problem is whether it is truly a Banksy and whether you're happy spunking a load of cash on it! Personally, i wouldn't!!

Yes I know it was legit. Thats what I meant by could be a steal(Bargain) I too was interested in it at the time, and even tickled with it on photoshop...indeed coming to the conclusion myself that it was hand sprayed. What really put me of was the sellers vague description...Listed as Giclee, Said in write up it was a screenprint, photo looked handsprayed.picture was in 2diferant frames? Plus the negative comments flying around on the board at the time put me off Who ever has it now is a lucky chap!
