Sepia Morons hits £3500, by dave313perry on Jun 20, 2007 21:11:09 GMT 1, I think the day's of a reasonably priced banksy have long gone . The world is so materialistic now that a couple of yrs ago Banksy was loved primarily for his art and the chat on this board was based solely on the artistic merits. Now it's " what's this worth " and " have you seen the price of this one !! " Good for those in at the ground floor - a sort of reward for those who just bought for the art in that you can now sell a £ 50 print for a really large amount . It used to take a fair length of time for the prints to sell out , even the signed ones. Most i am sure are owned by people who just love the art , otherwise there would be 100's of each for sale at any one time. But with popularity comes " fashion " and many now pile into Banksy art to solely make money and really miss the point. This is probably the reason for " Morons " Good on the man for selling via POW at affordable prices. Just a shame that it's all now totally down to the luck of the draw and whether your POW shopping basket actually makes it to checkout without crashing. The one good thing is that now people are looking for other artists, not neccessarily as the " next big thing " but simply just to be happy with what they can afford and put on their walls. Banksy is i believe only ever going to get bigger. Even discovering his identity - and i don't think anyone really wants to - will not detract from the histeria. - thanks for listening to my ramblings !
Niceley put Mr Bond, I still think many of our american counterparts miss the importance of Banksy, and how he should Be odds on to be the biggest artist in the next 50 years! IMO!!
I must admit that discussing prices and market trends etc is rather interesting and relevent even for the most avid collector, it is getting rather tedious at all the plugging for prices and estimates from people with a banksy. The amount of people coming on here to ask basically when will banksy's prices peak so i can offload mine, but usually in a round-a-bout way, like "im thinking of trading my ........ how much roughly do you think its worth and is now a good time to trade"
All rather gets on my tits, coupled with arguing and bickering between forums has brought down the level of this forum recently! IMO
But hell only momentarily! theres so many informative and knowledgable people on here as soon as a new release is brought out let the fun and games begin again and i will be educated once more!! maybe people are just bored and in anticipation of the next release!?!?
thats pretty much my rant over then! sorry for the jibber jabber!
Dave

Sepia Morons hits £3500, by dgb133 on Jun 20, 2007 21:15:37 GMT 1, Yeah, but you could say that about a lot of things.
And it's kind of silly. As evidenced by this board. Even here all people talk about here is the money. Well ok not all the time. I mean I know there are some life long Banksy advocates here who've been around for a while. But do you really think people would care about getting a Banksy print if they didn't also see it as a ways to get rich? If something happens where people have to spend $20,000 on a print and not be sure that they'll get more in return. People are going to start finding a new scheme to pile their money into, and quick. But these prints have gone from works of art to a new form of currency. And the rise in prices are completely unprecedented. That makes me worry that it's all hype hype hype. And the art world is just using it as a way to make money off "collectors."
Either way, I do think you're right that the days of affordable Banksy prints are gone. I just think it's going way too fast which often leads to burn out. I think prices will hit a point probably soon and stagnate for a long while. Still, I'll probably never be able to afford most of this stuff. Even when people do come to their senses. I'm not saying prices will ever completely drop.
And I love Banksy but I think it's really premature to say he's the most important artist of the last or next 50 years. That's the kind of talk I'm talking about. Hype hype hype. People see nothing but up up up here.

Sepia Morons hits £3500, by dave313perry on Jun 20, 2007 21:21:43 GMT 1, After all the highly collectable art was bought up by asian and russian billionaires the art market dried up over the last 20 years or so to my knowledge, Banksy has brought a new fresh wave of previously affordable art to the masses that has fastly influenced a whole wave of new artists, his legacy will live on long into the coming years, trust me...
appreciate your opinions and input though its interesting to get some other views, time will tell my friend
Cheers, Dave

We can sit here all day long talking about this or that. In the end it won't really matter. Just bullsh*tt*n mate. What will happen will happen. Regardless of what I've got to say about it. I think I'm just grumpy cause I can't afford to get the prints I really want anymore

Sepia Morons hits £3500, by bobbymeachamjr on Jun 20, 2007 23:02:24 GMT 1, chuckling
oh i've heard it all before. Here in the states I remember not too long ago in all social circles of non stop talk of real estate: "it always goes up" "history does not apply" "buy now before its too late" "cant lose" "unprecedented". And a few years before that it was "buy tech stocks at any cost because its 1999 and it'll go up forever!" SPECULATIVE FRENZY - once the big boys make their loot they'll move on to the next "too good to pass up investment". I'll say it again the common folk always get burned.

Sepia Morons hits £3500, by Friendly Ghost on Jun 20, 2007 23:07:39 GMT 1, Do people really think the world outside the UK won't "get" Banksy? While Americans probably aren't going to run out and buy a Queen Vic , I don't think it requires a particularly British sense of humor to get it.
I tend to think that Banksy's anti-establishment bent and juxtapositions are pretty universal, and work just as well for people outside the UK. Most of Banksy's work doesn't really show a hint of where it's from--could be anywhere (though the people are often white).
With the New Yorker article in May and the recent high-profile Hollywood purchases (for whatever they're worth), Banksy's only really just starting to gain visibility in the American mainstream. Though most folks in the US will be oblivious, there're still 300 million people here. Even a tiny fragment of that would be a massive growth in his audience. It's a huge, largely untapped market of potential fans, and I think it's only a matter of time before word starts spreading more widely.
And that's not even getting into the larger global market.

Nicely put, iv given up explaining my reasons as were talking predictions and nothing is set in stone and if people have the ignorance to believe Banksy will diminish Along with Gordon Brown then more the fool them. There is a multitude of reasons and Points that IMO mean Banksy is here to stay but could spend a week explaining them and still to no avail, so best to wait and see!

Sepia Morons hits £3500, by corblimeylimey on Jun 21, 2007 13:26:16 GMT 1, Now it's " what's this worth " and " have you seen the price of this one !! " and is it just me or does anyone else find it really boring? i tend to skip over the 'money' threads... i just couldn't give a flying feck. i can understand the interest in what prints may reach on ebay or at auction, but of late, value and speculative crystal ball gazing seems to be the only thing that gets 'column inches' on here
Just to add another unnecessary column inch
one day we'll all be millionaires ;D ;D

Ok, I think many people will understand his sentiment, but many won't like it, and many even if they chuckle at his stuff they won't get all wrapped up in it and absorbed by it. Do you really think people in Idaho or middle america are going to be rushing to spend $20,000 on a signed Banksy? (Maybe if you tell them that they'll be able to double their money on it that might get some of those people interested. But what happens when they can't? The higher this stuff spirals out of control the harder the fall.) Maybe some genuine people in California and NY and a few in between?... But there's a limited amount of people that would be interested in Banksy just like most of you probably don't care about owning a Thomas Kincade.
A lot of hyperbole over here. I mean I love Banksy, but this kind of "ready to take over the world." talk has to be tongue in cheek right?
For every reason you can give why Banksy will "take over the world" there's another reason why he won't. And I'm really not trying to predict myself. I'm just saying be careful with your expectations. Again it won't matter what you or I say here really. What will happen will happen. But you take away the financial motivation to owning a Banksy and the market's going to collapse. I don't know if that will happen but it kind of all seems shallow to me at this point.
