Customs Fees, by medicjones on Jul 1, 2007 17:01:29 GMT 1, Can anyone tell me what percentage of sale price does cutoms charge? Theres a few Japanese and American sellers on ebay currently and I was wondering what sort of extra fees Id have to pay? How do they find out the value of the prints? Do they contact you or vice versa? Any help would be great guys. PS Dont suppose anyone has a turf war print knocking about do they?!

Customs Fees, by manchestermike on Jul 1, 2007 17:07:34 GMT 1, You might need to pay 17.5% VAT + 5% duty but there are ways of getting some/all VAT back - let me find them

Customs Fees, by manchestermike on Jul 1, 2007 17:16:06 GMT 1, From a total of 22.5% you can recover 12.5% back as artwork is rated at 5% VAT but I think you've got to do this after you bring it in
So you'll have to pay 22.5% then once you've recovered the 12.5% it'll cost you £60
But, like most things I imagine it's a very time consuming process...

Customs Fees, by ray on Jul 1, 2007 17:24:23 GMT 1, I'm in the US, I understand if I send something as a gift it is still taxed but how would customs know the value of it (assume it's a print)...or would they just take my word on it?
Just curious

Customs Fees, by johnas on Jul 1, 2007 17:44:17 GMT 1, sorry to be the bearer of bad news but the 5% rate only applies to 'original' artworks - those produced by hand by the artist. Screenprints DO NOT fall in this category and are therefore liable to a rate of 17.5% (screenprints are classed as 'mechanical')
so, you have the cost of the print, the cost of shipping and insurance, VAT @ 17.5% and then PArcel Force charge an admin fee for sorting out all the customes fees. You have to pay these charges before they allow you to collect the print from your local PO
check this thread for more details:

Customs Fees, by craigf on Jul 1, 2007 18:49:50 GMT 1, Hypothetical idea this , if you get overseas purchases sent to work and VAT is charged in the companies name rather than yours they can reclaim it. There is no legal way around the duty...

Customs Fees, by manchestermike on Jul 1, 2007 19:10:56 GMT 1, I'd imagine the company would have to buy it and put it through their books to do this. Then when they "sell" it to you would have to charge VAT too

Customs Fees, by krazy on Jul 3, 2007 12:04:36 GMT 1, Sorry to bring this up again, but I just had a thought....
If I send a Banksy to the UK, would it still be taxed? Even considering the ORIGIN of the goods is the UK?? I know in some countries if you're sending something like artwork back to its place of origin, then you're not taxed.
The other way around would be to say that you're sending back a 'loan' piece to it's original owner. You'd have to send the receipts in advance though....

Customs Fees, by craigf on Jul 3, 2007 18:52:30 GMT 1, Re Mikes post the VAT charge would be a seperate invoice and it would only be if the company decided to pass on the cost to you that you would take the hit. The print would never be theirs.
Re the charge on the return to the UK of the print. If you were returning it for credit or replacement / repair(?) to POW it could be temporary imported (and also exported from your country to avoid paying tax upon its return), but you can not get around it if not being sent to the original supplier.
Detailing it as a loan is a possibility I guess...

Fedex is criminal. I bought a snowboard from the usa last year, the seller marked it as a $1800 board, i got it for $800 ( i have still no idea why he put a $1000 mark up on it) Fedex hand the parcel over, no tax to pay whoooo. About a week later i get a tax bill for about £220 i was happy to pay the tax but not on the $1800 only on the $800 it worked out i owed about £120 but to reclaim the tax i had to pay the bill then pay a £110 non refunable charge to Fedex to process my claim. So it was cheaper to pay the tax bill and leave it. Ebay seller didnt reply to any of my emails after.

Not a good story mate.
I'd imagine it left a bitter taste about it.
Touch wood, I've always been lucky with goods from the states.
