Good point Mike. I didn't notice until late last night that the Micallefs (MWIH and Girl Tokyo) which sold for 3k and 2k on the live auction were A/P's which would go some way to explaining why the prices were higher than expected. (May have been some dodgy bidding as well, however).

Why are Artist's Proofs cheaper?, by Tyler Durden on Jun 29, 2007 15:01:46 GMT 1, I'm sure someone else will elaborate on this, but they're trial prints where the artist is dabbling with different designs / colourschemes etc. It used to be the case that they weren't worth as much, however in this crazy market, provided they're signed and by a sought after artist, they are regularly going for more. Also if an actual print is black and white e.g. the Mantis print, and there were A/Ps out there involving more colours then as more work had gone into them, they'd cost more. Also not part of the limited edition run blah blah.
I think it's better to take a backseat in the forum today and nurse this hangover...

Why are Artist's Proofs cheaper?, by Gentle Mental on Jun 29, 2007 15:02:02 GMT 1, My impression is that AP's are not the official prints, but rather the last round of "tests". therefore, not the best of what it image should be.

Why are Artist's Proofs cheaper?, by saltandiron on Jun 29, 2007 15:05:18 GMT 1, Some people will pay more for an AP while some people will pay less, its all down to personal taste. Bit like some people prefer a demo version of a song and some people prefer the studio version.

Why are Artist's Proofs cheaper?, by ABC on Jun 30, 2007 13:08:58 GMT 1, I think we have been here before on this matter. A/P's always used to sell for less but with Street/Urban art whatever we call it they seem to be the ones to try a get hold of. Take Banksy A/Ps they are like Hot cakes. I prefer A'Ps dont know why I just do.
