lack of originality, by Andy'77 on Jan 11, 2009 18:46:55 GMT 1, Do you know this for a fact or is it speculation? Would be v interested to hear what you have heard as I was at Sony at the time of this release, know the background to the idea and the people involved from a creative perspective from inside the company. I don't believe your post is accurate, but have an open mind re what you have said. Sony would not have approached Kozyndan, but that's not to say one of the agencies pitching for the job didn't I try not to add more speculation to this forum as there is plenty enough of that as it is. This is from KnDs Live journal. "Its hard to think that people at Passion Pictures did not have this early panoramic of ours in mind when they created this new spot for the SONY Bravia line.
To add insult to injury, someone from Passion Pictures contacted us almost two years ago asking to see samples of our work (including this panoramic) as they were interested in working with us. We sent them samples and then heard nothing from them ever again. (It should be noted though, that the more likely culprit is the ad firm who hired Passion Pictures, Fallon)
Still, its a clever ad."Just from a purely aesthetic point of view, there is a very definite similarity.

I do not agree with this at all. It is clearly more that inspiration. They have used his animation technique, the same colour and the actual graphics/drawings look the same. Its just a rip-off!
Its also wrong because people that never saw the Blu video (most people) will say wow what a clever idea and always remember the advert.
Everyone should check out:

Have a look at how much stuff get ripped off all the time.

lack of originality, by bullet on Jan 12, 2009 11:04:29 GMT 1, it happens every day, its what commercial design is about - art is a different subject. to get it confused shows a lack of knowledge about the subject

I hate to admit it but freerange is right, i too work in design and it happens more than you think. Everyone rips eachother off to a certain extent.

lack of originality, by redman on Jan 12, 2009 14:32:28 GMT 1, Thought I'd jump in with some thoughts.
How many artists have been 'inspired' by Banksy.
Also I think you'll find Banksy, while original in content, could be accused of borrowing styling etc himself. So you see it's not just us advertising types who 'borrow'.

lack of originality, by redman on Jan 12, 2009 14:34:27 GMT 1, Oh and I was fortunate to see Bill Hicks live in Liverpool not long before he died. Genius is a word used to often to describe people but this guy really was a legend.

lack of originality, by bullet on Jan 12, 2009 14:36:07 GMT 1, as i say, its not about not having an original idea. Every creative can do that (or try to) but the client often goes for the safer option. Sometimes they see something a competitor as done and say 'we like that, can we have something similar', so what are you supposed to do?

sack up, man. stop blaming clients for your industry's wrongdoings.

lack of originality, by ratboy on Jan 13, 2009 11:59:53 GMT 1, It looks like the Guardian piece has been edited - it previously had a quote from the agency saying what a 'state of the art' advert it was, and a description about the stop motion technique they used.
Fair enough taking inspiration from something, but the low part is not referencing who they're clearly inspired by. The additional touches added by computers also devalue the work of Blu in my opinion.
And Freerange, why resort to calling Angelo, someone who works tirelessly with a roster of amazing artists a t**t? Give it a rest hey?

So that makes it OK that he's ripped him off?

Serge did not produce the piece! He was just paid by the production company to do the drawings for their "idea".
