Paper Conservator NYC help! (Fix my Banksy), by micko on Jan 4, 2009 16:43:04 GMT 1, I just picked up my print of Trolleys from the framer yesterday. The framing looks amazing although i'm really pissed off in that there are a few specks of what looks like black paint the size of pinheads scattered over the light blue portion of the print and into the unpainted margins. Apparently the framer elected to heat press the print in order to get some light wrinkles and supposed lumps out of it in order for it to lay truly flat. They basically took an iron to my Banksy. Bastards! Our guess is that in that process some of the specks of the black paint on the print somehow loosened up, became airborne and landed on other parts of the print. Some of these particles have stuck. Needless to say, I was/am furious and I will not be going back to that framer and they've agreed to whatever restoration process I go with.
Can anyone please recommend an amazing art restorer/paper conservationist in NYC that I could take my pride and joy to?
Thanks, Mike

Paper Conservator NYC help! (Fix my Banksy), by chief on Jan 4, 2009 20:55:23 GMT 1, For the price it'll probably end up costing an arm and a leg and the framers will most likely not do it. I'd just have them buy you another one on eBay, keep the new one, and resell the old one. I got a trollys for $650 last week. (Also if you're desperate try a using a magic eraser on it, that gets everything off for me)
also up some pics too.

Paper Conservator NYC help! (Fix my Banksy), by crazyarsemother on Jan 4, 2009 22:54:52 GMT 1, Hi Micko - got any photos?
Are you sure it was not there before? If heating the paper has caused it can someone please explain the science behind it? I have stood in the printing room at POW and I am pretty sure they use water based inks (I think there were no fumes or extractor) and my trolleys is on pretty thick paper. Very interested in the science of all this so if someone could enlighten us then that would be great?
Sorry to get excited about your misfortune Micko.

Paper Conservator NYC help! (Fix my Banksy), by micko on Jan 5, 2009 19:06:01 GMT 1, I do have pics of it, but they're at home. (but I have no idea how to upload them to this site). I took pics prior to getting it framed as part of my Pest Control authentication. Trust me, the specks weren't there earlier. It was a pristine print.
First they framed it and there were noticeable creases and lumps behind the art. So, i told them to fix it. So, they fixed it by taking it out of the frame and ironing the damn thing under a heat press. Granted, it did the trick and it got rid of the lumps (the lumps ALSO weren't there prior to me bringing it to them). Now, there are just 2 specks left as my wife was able to lift most of them off with the gentle use of a very sharp needle. The 2 that are left are too delicate for us to attempt any further efforts.
We're just speculating about the heat/paint transfer in the press. But, it does seem logical. Clearly there was something that went airborne in the press and landed on the print that wasn't there before.
