Uncertain Future For Hertford Landmark 14:47 - 30 December 2008
Waters car showroom, which stood in North Road, closed earlier this month after more than 50 years in the town.
Residents expressed concern for what might become of the now empty site.
One Hertford woman said: "It's been there ages, and doesn't look very nice now- it's quite ugly. It's one of the first things you see as you come into Hertford, so it should be sorted out quickly to make it look better."
Another commented in an online forum that the boarded up windows should be given a makeover, making them look more attractive. Referring to the satirical graffiti artist they wrote: "Banksy where are you?"
Those sentiments were echoed by deputy mayor Cllr Peter Ruffles. He told the Herald: "Are Waters able to run to the commissioning of some decent public art on their hard boarded windows? Is there a properly run Group who could offer Waters their artistic aid?"
He also said that "there is a big challenge ahead" as to what to do with the site as the planners "will want to keep the turn of the century" feel to the building, which is in a conservation area. He added: "Any new planning application, to be accepted, will have to show that it at least maintains the qualities of the surrounding conservation area of North Crescent and St Andrew Street in particular and should really enhance those qualities. It is prominent for passers-through in their vehicles along Gascoyne Way.
