Do you look at your Banksies (etc)?, by sfdoddsy on Dec 20, 2008 14:54:56 GMT 1, Just a late night ponder.
I was lying back tonight after a few beers and looking at some of the pieces on my walls. I wouldn't say I find new things each time, but there is always something there from a purely aesthetic point of view.
Then I got wondering about pieces by artists such as Banksy, where the point is not to tickle your aesthetic sensibilities, but to provoke your intellectual sensibilities.
Which is all well and good.
But a lot of this kind of work is like a joke. The first time you see it it's great. But the second time (and onwards) you know the joke.
Given you know the punchline, once it is on your walls what draws you to keep looking at it?

They are VERY powerful compositions and I don't care how many times I look at each one (a few times a day), it does anything but dilute my appreciation for the works themselves. I've got paintings by artists that may have more technical proficiency in some ways but they don't capture the ingenuity nor do they speak for an entire movement that i consider the signature of this civilization. You know great art when you see it or at least I think I do. I've never been one to argue that art in any specific medium needs to be complex to be great; on the contrary, often it is the simple compositions in music or paintings that move me and the rest of the world the most.
Ultimately, I know that Banksy on our walls has only increased our desire to own more of his work. We've got a well rounded and fairly large collection over a range of movements and next to Warhol, there is no other artist that we own that I have found to to be so addictive. I've also learned with collecting that there are very few pieces that you fall out of love with. While I can appreciate why some might think of these paintings as a tongue in cheek joke if you will that could get repetitive on their walls, to me they capture his humor and social commentary in a convincingly powerful way and they draw me in further each day as the viewer.
Take Banksy out of the equation for a moment and look to Richard Prince. I, for one, don't understand the fuss over the nurse paintings and that's ok because I can't afford them anyway. Still, there are many of his compositions that are in essence clever stories or jokes written out on monochrome canvases and I find many of them to be brilliant. Does one get bored of a Fontana because it's a simple canvas with a cut down the middle? How about a "boring" all blue Yves Klein painting? Or Dodsy, does the childish nature of many of the best Dubuffet's grow old once you've looked at them 20 times? Of course not, they grow stronger.

Do you look at your Banksies (etc)?, by jamesreeve5 on Dec 21, 2008 20:13:18 GMT 1, A bit off topic, but I am sometimes confused when referencing Banksy as a plural. Under normal grammatical circumstances I would say that it would be "Banksies" (like candies is to candy). But the word Banksy is a proper noun since it is someone's name, and in this case I would say "Banksys" as to not change the original spelling of the name (like when referring to the Kelly family as the Kellys).
Any english teachers out there care to clarify this?

Do you look at your Banksies (etc)?, by Harveyn on Dec 22, 2008 14:41:46 GMT 1, Several years back when my daughter was a baby every night I would walk around my house with my daughter in my arms pointing at the art on my walls. Talking to her about each piece even though she was only months old and to young to understand. Thankfully we have a new arrival in the house whom I now treat to the same ritual each night. My most relaxing and most pleasurable moments of the day.

Harvey:
That's fantastic. I walk my son (18 months) around the house each night saying goodnight to many of the paintings and often let him reach out his hand and touch them too. We both get a kick out of it and i've heard his mom giving him the same "tour". Looking at your collection through your children's eyes is one of life's simple pleausres.
