poor mans Faile, by jones27 on Oct 31, 2008 12:21:38 GMT 1, Anyone else feeling the Greg Gossel canvas on hang up ? I appreciate Gossel is blatantly ripping off Failes style, but this comic book theme in pop art has been around for years. Arguably Hush and D-face have jumped on Failes style and remained much more unscathed in critism to Gossel.

So true, and Faile have soared price wise in a very short time to be the second highest priced artist/collective emulating the de collage style and in many cases are priced significantly higher than 2 of the 3 pioneers of the original movement.

Faile jokes aside this is a really beautiful canvas, Greg is a young guy with a lot of talent and his work is getting better each time I see it.

poor mans Faile, by skelly on Oct 31, 2008 22:26:51 GMT 1, Lee3- I agree with your statements. I saw someone post a Mimmo Rotella hand torn signed print that cost less than most Faile prints..a bit ridiculous!
As far as Gossel's work goes...I know a lot of people jack styles and various imagery....but such a blatant use of both. He is using the exact same decollage style (that I would be fine with him using on it's own, I.E. Gagnon) but he is pairing it with weeping women, men portrayed the same way Faile does, cartoon characters, and big brand logos. It makes me want to throw up how close to Faile his work is, it is to the point when I saw it the first time I thought it was a Faile or when someone starts a thread about this loser they call it a "poor mans faile"

poor mans Faile, by skanky on Oct 31, 2008 23:12:14 GMT 1, Sorry I think you are wrong but obviously entitled to your opinion as am I . Throw up, poor mans Faile and especially loser are way over the top as far as I am concerned . There are obvious similarities but also obvious differences, I own a piece which I enjoy looking at which is what its all about and I went to see his new work in London which I also enjoyed . I don't know for sure but would put money on the Faile boys not having the same over the top attitude as you. As far as I am concerned he is using different references and thats enough for me. I love Failes work but I am able to enjoy and see the merit in both.

Great - as long as you like it. For me it's not all about money. If I like something and I have resources I will go for it no matter what. If I don't feel it I wouldn't touch it with a pole. And I don't feel GG at all. Mind you there are some Faile pieces that are not so great too.

poor mans Faile, by lukedixon on Nov 1, 2008 2:08:49 GMT 1, Generally in music there are plenty of bands out there that sound the same. Apologies for using this example fella's, but, to me 'westlife' and 'take that' sound exactly the same - but you don't see teenage lasses arguing over who came up with that pissy, whining music first! ...they just scream and chuck there knickers at them or in my uncle's case, some dirty y's.
imo I'm pretty pleased more artists are working in the 'style of faile'. I don't think Faile are losing sleep over it.....or am i missing the point here?

I agree with some of your points and respect your opinion. I guess I can understand the argument if you like the way it looks buy it. I can truthfully say if I had never seen a Faile before and I ran into a Gossel piece I probably would love it and be very interested in it. The reason I would be so interested in it is because the medium, style and references are the same as Faile. Greg Gossel's main references are women in peril (same as faile), so how can you say their references are not the same? When he is not referencing the main thing Faile also reference he is throwing the things Bast used to add to large Faile canvases himself such as "Amoco" and a cartoon character. Skanky, not an attack on you, I actually think you have good taste from the pictures you have posted of your collection, but surely you must understand that saying their references are different baffles me

poor mans Faile, by skanky on Nov 1, 2008 9:54:45 GMT 1, No worries Skelly , I just don't see it as always exactly the same references (although I admit I have not seen the amoco piece you refer to). I see more of a nod to Lichtenstein in his work, women in peril has been done many times before Faile took it up and ran with it. The language you use to describe someones hard work and effort for me is over the top, come on calling the guy a loser ? Anyone would think he was knocking out Faile fakes out the back door. I still stand by my opinion that if you put a piece by both artists next to each other they have a different feel.

poor mans Faile, by snausages on Nov 1, 2008 16:12:51 GMT 1, While Faile incorporates the style and technique of decoulage I feel they aren't derivative and have almost reinvented it. Gossel is talented but it just feels very derivative and unoriginal. (So many influences and nothing revolutionary) But I'll admit that canvas look ok and so a 61cm canvas for ยฃ900 compared to ยฃ25000 I can't argue about buying it. Just wouldn't expect much appreciation...
That's my problem with many of these artists we talk about. In this case I feel the prices will balance out eventually. Either prices will come up on the others, or Failes will go down... ...and they have already started to, at least in the secondary market. Will Laz really be able to sell everything for 100 thousand bucks a canvas?
