CUSTOMS CHARGES , by bond on May 24, 2007 8:38:57 GMT 1, Hi all ,
I am pretty sure this has been discussed before but i can't find the thread .
Just wondering if anyone has bought a Sepia from US Ebay and taken delivery.
Assuming it would have cost you around ยฃ 2.5 k i was wondering whether any of you have been stung with a customs charge , if so how much , if not , how did you avoid it ( gift label ? )
Thanks in advance
;D

CUSTOMS CHARGES , by saltandiron on May 24, 2007 9:10:39 GMT 1, I think it all comes down to what it says on the label (assuming customs don't open it up). If you ask them to mark it as a gift on the label with a nominal value like $20 then it seems like it gets through pretty much everytime. The downside is that you're not insured for any more than this - so it depends if you want to take the risk.
If you do go for the true value on the label I'm pretty sure its 5% plus a handling fee - I paid something like ยฃ13 handling last time on top of the customs charge. so for a 2.5k sepia you probably wouldn't get much change out of ยฃ150.
the choice is yours.....

CUSTOMS CHARGES , by Wiseblood on May 24, 2007 9:18:21 GMT 1, Its only 5% if its origional art work, that has been touched by the artist. Other than that its 17.5% of the price of the print including the p+p charges. I was thinking about the same thing so rang HM Revenue and Customs. They will tell you the same as i have, but they do give you a phone number 01702 366077 which is for the importing of art into the uk (or summit like that) they will tell you if it classifiys as a 5% tax or a 17.5% tax. Hope this helps

CUSTOMS CHARGES , by johnas on May 24, 2007 9:23:52 GMT 1, wiseblood is right. you have the cost of the print + P&P to the UK then add 17.5% VAT customs charge (for screenprints) + Parcelforce's Handling charge!

for a signed banksy it would probably be cheaper to fly over and pick it up yourself, then walk down the nothing to declare path at the end of the airport!

CUSTOMS CHARGES , by bonesy on May 24, 2007 9:52:18 GMT 1, What would it cost to insure an overseas print for ยฃ 2.5 k? I would personally go with a trustworthy seller (packager, shipper) and mark it as a gift.

No idea, personally I'd risk it and have it marked as a gift but some people like the security I suppose.

CUSTOMS CHARGES , by Octopus UK on May 24, 2007 12:16:17 GMT 1, VAT on ยฃ650 <> VAT on ยฃ2500.
Even flying to the US and collecting it yourself is not the answer. I think you are only allowed to bring back ยฃ140 worth of stuff before you "technically" have to walk through the RED - "Items to Declair" door.

CUSTOMS CHARGES , by Wiseblood on May 24, 2007 15:51:20 GMT 1, Marking something as a gift will only avoid you of VAT (import taxes) if the declared value is less than $40 or ยฃ27 (think they are the correct amounts) Id personally fly over there, some really cheap flights to be had, if its from the east coast you could pop into the Faile show and if its from the west coast, Kirkwood still has plently of snow

CUSTOMS CHARGES , by stoopydex on May 24, 2007 16:29:45 GMT 1, might as well mark it as gift and not insure it. all shipping services here in America will not cover art at its value. If you have had a damaged print and they covered it, you are very lucky. post office, ups, and fedex have all told me same thing. they are happy to take your money for insurance but when it comes to the claim they will fight you. better to take insurance money and invest it in the best shipping supplies to protect the art yourself. then your only worry is it getting lost in the mail and being uninsured.

CUSTOMS CHARGES , by Curley on May 24, 2007 16:45:57 GMT 1, So are there penalties for trying to mark something on customs as a gift that is not a gift?
all be it on a low level i think its called tax evasion.. Dont forget that customs and excise and the tax man have some serious power in this country and can confiscate most anything they choose.
