Visit SINGAPORE ๐ธ๐ฌ Street Art, Galleries, Events, by robinbanks on Jun 2, 2009 15:29:00 GMT 1, If you go to Thailand make sure you visit Ang Thong (think that's how you spell it) it's a National Marine Park about half way between Koh Samui and Kho Phang Ngang (again sorry about spelling).
I can honestly say it is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. We got a boat so far over from Samui and then kayaked the rest of the way to one of the islands where you can then climb through the rocks to a hidden inland limestone lagoon - the place that inspired Alex Garland to write The Beach apparently. The place is insanely beautiful and I think if you book in advance you can spend the night on one of the beaches - although not sure how good that would be if you have kids with the heat and the mozzies etc.
I'll see if I can post a couple of pics.

Visit SINGAPORE ๐ธ๐ฌ Street Art, Galleries, Events, by slowmo on Jun 2, 2009 23:08:43 GMT 1, 1 must see, Angkor wat, will be tough with kids as young as 6 though, unless they're culture vultures. Also its set on a huge area so are you cool with mopeds? You can get guides pretty cheap to drive you all around on them and can fly there from Bangkok. Allow three days to see it all, but its IMO one of the spots in asia to see before you die.
Halong bay is a good shout from Fragile, but Samui is now all Mcdonalds and retired english/ german/ swiss blokes running bars (avoid if you're serious about the cultural education)

I might think twice before I put up any wheat pasters of the Sheps Dalai Lama in Singapore ;D
######
A Swiss man has been sentenced to five months in jail and three strokes of a cane for spray-painting graffiti on a train in Singapore.
Oliver Fricker, 32, a software consultant, admitted breaking into a depot and vandalising the train.
The judge called it a serious breach of security.
Caning in Singapore involves being struck with a wooden stick on the back of the thigh, which can leave permanent scars.
Amnesty International called the sentence barbaric. Accomplice
Judge See Kee Oon said Fricker's actions were "calculated criminal conduct".
"He was fully conscious of the criminal nature of the act and must be prepared to face the consequences," the judge said.
Singapore says it is still hunting for a second man, UK national Lloyd Dane Alexander, who it believes took part in the spray-painting.
Fricker was arrested on 25 May, eight days after the incident and two days before he was to leave for a new job in Switzerland.
Prosecutors said the pair spray-painted the words "McKoy" and "Banos" on two carriages - a signature that has featured in graffiti works in other countries.
It is not clear if the two men are the duo behind the other works, or imitators.
Vandalism in Singapore carries a fine of up to S$2,000 ($1,437) or up to three years in jail, in addition to three to eight strokes of a cane.

Singapore society is a little sterile and soulless I'd agree but never felt so safe walking down the street at 2am after a few beers......

I love street art just like most of you guys - but some country's you just don't screw around in and Singapore would be at the top of the list.

I lived in Singapore from 1990-1994. Just to clear it up, Mike Fay was a friend of mine and most certainly was not the American ambassador's son. Nor were the other "kids" involved.
Why a 32 y/o man would do this is beyond me.
Ouch!

Signed this morning too. It's utter bollocks, though the poor 25-year-old girl should have skipped the spraying to avoid the heavy charges.

From our local papers:
SINGAPORE - Police arrested a 25-year-old woman who is believed to have painted: "MY GRANDFATHER ROAD" on several roads in Singapore.
Between May 17 to 21 this year, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) found some roads being painted with the words "MY GRANDFATHER ROAD" along Robinson Road and Maxwell Road and reported the matter to the Police.
LTA also reported that circular stickers printed with captions were pasted on a pavement around Lau Pa Sat and on a road traffic sign along Robinson Road.
Officers from Central Police Division, with the support from Police Intelligence Department, investigated the matter and arrested the female suspect yesterday at her home in the eastern part of Singapore.
The officers also found several paint-stained stencils and several pieces of stickers printed with captions.
These items were seized for investigation.
Police are investigating and are working with LTA on earlier reports of round stickers found affixed on other pedestrian crossings at various places.
A person who is convicted for vandalism shall be punished with a fine of up to S$2,000, or jail up to three years and caning.
Police said they take a serious view of such irresponsible actions and warned that offenders will be dealt with severely. CHANNEL NEWSASIA
By law, being female means no caning. But that could also mean longer jail term. Not sure if a petition or anything would sway. But anything and everything helps.
