Andy Warhol ๐บ๐ธ Real or Fake? โข Sunday B. Morning Print, by troika49 on Nov 9, 2020 4:36:21 GMT 1, als33 - I've seen a few mailers available: Flowers (1964) - Folded sheet which is 22x22 inches expanded out S&H Green Stamps (1965) - 22x22 inches Mao Invitation Card (1972) - 7x7 inches Marilyn Monroe (1981) - 7x7 inches
Would you know: - Should I consider all of the above as lithographs similar to a poster/postcard and not reproduced the same way as the original works on paper? - Are there many fakes of the above out there? - Should I treat any signed versions of the above as suspect?
I've also tracked down a copy of F&S so I can get better acquainted with this space. It's fun to learn about history in Andy's time, look at the works and also collect potential pieces. It's the awesome part of our hobby. It's a little bit of history, literature, visual art, culture and commerce all in one.

It's the awesome part of our hobby. It's a little bit of history, literature, visual art, culture and commerce all in one. Keep in mind that this is just one guy's opinion, but I'd consider the 64 flower and 65 green stamps mailers as essentially prints - they were created at the same time using the same method and the same images as their editioned counterparts (green stamps and flowers were both signed editions of 300). The differences between these and the mailers are :
- the mailers are unsigned (obviously) - the mailers are from larger editions (unknown in the case of flowers, 6,000 in the case of green stamps) - The flowers mailer is printed to the edge - the signed edition has a small border around the edge where it's signed - They're printed on the reverse - They're folded (8 sections for the flowers, more for the stamps, but I'm not sure how many)
but otherwise they're largely the same. They'll never be near as valuable as the signed version, but I think that actually makes them pretty good bang for the buck (Lichtenstien did a similar run of prints/mailers with Castelli at the same time and you can get a Crying Girl mailer for somewhere around 10-20% of what the signed edition of 300 goes for, for the same image, printed at the same time, by the same people, for the same show).
I'm less familiar with later invitations and show cards, but I'd definitely put these more in the category of reproductions/ephemera. Sometimes around the time a portfolio was released, the publisher would produce miniature versions on card stock (sort of like postcards) as promotional items but I wouldn't consider these to be "prints" or "editions" at all and sales prices tend to be all over the place.
Unfortunately there's a ton of fake Warhol signatures out there, to the point where unless it's from a top tier auction house and/or has super rock-solid provenance, I assume that anything that wasn't originally from a signed edition that has a signature (posters, books, etc), the signature, at least, is fake
Glad you got a copy of F&S - if you're into Warhol, it's absolutely indispensible. I'd also recommend "The Complete Commissioned Posters" (https://www.amazon.com/Andy-Warhol-Complete-Commissioned-1964-1987/dp/3791349716/ref=sr_1_22?dchild=1&keywords=warhol+posters&qid=1604939524&sr=8-22). It covers a lot of stuff that doesn't rise to the level of an editioned print, but is still "official" Warhol, and an interesting avenue for collecting

Andy Warhol ๐บ๐ธ Real or Fake? โข Sunday B. Morning Print, by als33 on Nov 9, 2020 22:21:34 GMT 1, Do you know the level of fakes of the mailers going around? One would presume people would rather fake the actual editions but who knows... Sorry - should have been clearer on that one. I meant that there are a lot of fake "autographs" out there (i.e., things that weren't originally part of a signed, numbered edition, but are sold as signed by Warhol, like posters and books, etc. - you often get a situation where the object might be real, but the signature's a fake). I don't have any knowledge or experience that would lead me to believe the Castelli mailers are faked any more frequently than anything else.

Andy Warhol ๐บ๐ธ Real or Fake? โข Sunday B. Morning Print, by troika49 on Nov 9, 2020 22:28:17 GMT 1, Thanks... I agree on the autographs of both Lichtenstein and Warhol. Too many going around and the fakes are nearly impossible to tell apart especially on a computer screen.
I suspect the temptation is too great to sign genuine ephemera and then bump up the price 10x.

Andy Warhol ๐บ๐ธ Real or Fake? โข Sunday B. Morning Print, by Catman 74 on Nov 12, 2020 16:25:53 GMT 1, For full transparency it does have a light crease but considering its age I think it's in pretty damn good condition..it's printed on a really thick paper and I believe a restorer should sort that issue easily..I'm not desperate to sell as could easily wait and put it in Auction but I think it's a decent private sale price for one of the Collectors out there..and yes it was kept rolled but now it's out of the tube and I will let it rest before I flatten it..
Best, Cat

Since I am not an expert of pop art, it is too much of a risk for me without hard provenance...
Maybe this is a sign that I should stick to my areas of expertise.

Andy Warhol ๐บ๐ธ Real or Fake? โข Sunday B. Morning Print, by Wanchope on Nov 25, 2020 10:27:36 GMT 1, I finally got my hands on a Warhol Superman print for <$5k this year; Unsigned and unnumbered. First saw this print 15 years ago and wanted it.ย I have my eye on a test print which is unsigned and Not numbered. I love the look of them and it has a Feldman stamp on the back and the embossed logo. However I assume this can all be faked? Just love the image and test prints still seem to sell well at auction. Is yours a test print ? Cheers

It seems real but I can't prove it. In the end I love this piece and wanted on my wall but not to drop$200k for the signed version.
It is in the framers so once exited lockdown will hopefully get it and send a pic.
